That announcing crew (except for JJ) is going to be brutal if it's the Knicks. This could be a mute button series.

So while I wouldn't be super concerned if Knicks win tomorrow night... a game 7 and then the winner of that never gets more than one day off the whole series, that could have a real effect.

Is there an espn crew that isn’t deserving of the mute button? Breen is worthy of his very own button.

Pardon for perhaps a stupid question but I generally don't follow basketball until the playoffs and saw that Porzingas is out. I haven't been able to find anywhere if he's expected back by this next series or ? I got to watch just two of the series against the Cavs and while it'd be better, obviously to have him starting, what's your take if he can't make it back against either Knicks or Pacers?

Huh, I kind of like Breen? I get his NY bias, but that's more endearing than anything. And JJ is great with anyone.

This is either a great riff on the broadcast crews, or you missed the KP thread, as they did.

I guess the Breen ‘bang’ just gives me ptsd from past years. And it’s a three person booth when there should prob be two at most

I think the whole broadcaster bias thing is overrated but Mike Breen kind of breaks the mold for me. He seems to just straight up root for the Knicks whenever they are playing

I feel like that's endearing because it's a view into the real person, and because the Knicks have been so bad for so long. Feels different from a broadcaster overly lionizing a particular player (e.g. Doris with Embiid).

Doris with Embiid is annoying as hell…

And, agree to disagree on Breen. When it gets to the playoffs I think you have to check your rooting interest at the door and try to call the game as down the middle as possible.

I think Breen is good. His call of the Nembhard three in this series was as wild a BANG as he can deliver even though it was a dagger to his Knicks.

He probably gets some residual dislike from previously being saddled with a bottom 5 commentator and top 5 dumbass in any sport in Mark Jackson while also trying to salvage any scrap of positivity from the unyielding jaws of JVG.

Exactly. He really was carrying some awful, awful partners.

He also does commercials with Jayson Tatum and jokes about how embarrassing it was to mess up the call on Tatum's game winner against Brooklyn. I just don't get the hate. He feels to me like if Mike Gorman were from NYC and had a national gig.

And "bang" (with the double bang variants) is an iconic call that has accentuated some great NBA moments well.

I thought the schedule was dependent on whether Knicks/Pacers went 7 games or not and thus game 1 would be either Sunday (if Knicks win in 6) or Tuesday. It looks like it's Tuesday either way now. Was I wrong before, or did something change?

ETA: nevermind - Wolves/Nuggets going to 7 pushed ECF game 1 to Tuesday

Either the Knicks series or the Minnesota/Denver series had to go 7

This really doesn’t mean anything. He gets the commercials because he’s the #1 guy for ESPN.
And that Tatum call was absolute trash. I don’t think it’s a badge of honor that when he’s directly asked about it he says it’s embarrassing.

EDIT: Breen is a good PBP guy when the Knicks aren’t involved. YMMV, but I don’t like watching a game where one of the announcers is clearly partial to one of the teams involved

The bolded isn't fair. He was asked (by Reddick, I believe) if he's ever had a call he wished he handled differently, an open ended question not leading him anywhere. Breen specifically called out the Tatum game-winner, "I butchered the call as badly as I've ever butchered a big call at the end of a game...I couldn't sleep the next two days."

He fucked it up badly, and he knows it. What else do you want? Big fan of Breen.

Breen is good at his job, and I don’t mind that his Knicks fandom bleeds into his work. The Knicks have largely been a fucking joke for about 25 years; this isn’t like a PBP guy openly rooting for the Lakers over the same period. I can understand it grating on people, but it’s not so prevalent or in your face that it really bothers me.

I’m admittedly also colored by his days at WFAN - he’s a funny guy who appreciates the balance between basketball as a passion project for fans and basketball as entertainment not to be taken as seriously as a heart attack.

Since I don't think anyone directly answered you,

(1) Porzingis has returned to light on-court activities as of a week ago, but we all assumed he was out until the ECF. It wouldn't surprise anyone if he was back for ECF game 1, game 4, or not till the Finals. Wide range of possibilities, we have no firm indication.

(2) for more detail on his situation and what tea leaves we're reading, check the Porzingis thread.

Living in NYC, while hating the Knicks, I grew to appreciate Breens calls. I think he does a pretty good job on the national games calling a balanced game.

FyI Johnny Most made,
"he stops, he pops, BANG!

a go to call in his high above courtside repetoire. That is to say give the assist to Most on Breens sig call

The second best thing, after the news, is the photo with him wearing the classic satin Starter Celtics jacket. My parents got me one for my 12th BDay in 1984. Wore that thing everyday, even on cold days in middle of Winter. Still have it. Wish I still had the Sky Jordan’s that I got in 1985 or the Larry Bird Black Converse Weapon's that I got in 1986.
Fwiw, they reissued the 86 Weapons. Got a pair from Foot Locker online a couple of months back. You're welcome.

Wait, some of you are hating on Breen because he messed up a call at the end of the Brooklyn game? He admits he fucked it up, but also, really? He thought they waived off the basket, so he called it that way. It was wrong. So fucking what? Listen to this 5 minute clip from JJ's pod. Not sure how anyone can feel any ill will towards him hearing him talk about his craft and that call

Yes, this is what I was recalling.

Basically people want to hate on him, and they're going to do so regardless, even though he seems like a good guy who does his job well.

I got the same jacket the same year when my family left North Reading for suburban Detroit. I wore it defiantly to middle school the next several years amongst my Pistons fan classmates.

Here
I do think a fully healthy Knicks team goes 6-7 with Boston and would have been a real threat and title contender.

But if cows had wings they would fly.

That tweet is misleading. If you listen carefully, he's saying that because the Knicks aren't healthy he's not sure he can even take them (i.e., the Knicks) to beat Indiana — whereas if they were healthy he would take them to beat Boston. He's not saying that he would take Indiana over Boston. (There's some cross-talk which makes it hard to follow.)

The Knicks line is whatever, though I disagree.

Saying he’s not even sure they can beat the Pacers? Enough lol.
I think he’s saying he’s not even sure that the Knicks can beat the Pacers.

EDIT: And this is why I don’t watch any NBA related TV. It’s a stupid statement by Wilbon…and who’s gong to disagree with him? Stephen A? The guys entire career is built off of being a jackass and getting people riled up. Bob Myers? I am not even sure he realizes he is on TV, he just still roots for the Warriors. If he’s not rooting for
The warriors he’s setting fire to the idea that he was some exec way ahead of every else by saying stupid shit constantly

Lucking into the only good stretch of Andrew Wiggins' career really helped Bob's rep, undeservedly.

I think a fully healthy Knicks teams goes 5 with the Celtics if they even get there.... I think Randle being out sneakily helped them before the other injuries piled up.
Of course I think a healthy 76ers would have stomped out the Healthy Knicks round 1 so,....

Wilbon with a classic talking head move: this literally cannot be tested under my parameters, but here is an aggressive take. Pretty daring stuff.

Anything is possible I suppose, but yeah I think some people are going a little overboard about what the Knicks lost.

Some useful players and definitely would have had a more well rounded rotation, but we aren't talking about All-NBA guys.

The Celtics were way better than the Knicks this year, regardless of health. A Knicks win, healthy or not, would be a big upset.
