Round 6 • Pick 33 (210) • WR Demario Douglas

Patriots.com's Evan Lazar happy about this small school, speedy little wideout, too:

The Patriots won me over with the sixth-rounders at wide receivers, especially Douglas. After an in-person viewing at the Shrine Bowl, Douglas's vertical burst with 4.44-second speed and fluidity through his cuts give him NFL-caliber separation talent. According to SportSource Analytics, Douglas's open receiver rate of 83% ranked ten percent above the FBS average. He's a smaller slot-only type and needs to be more precise with his routes. But Douglas has the quick-twitch movement skills to uncover, making DBs at his level of competition look silly at times. New England passing on shifty slots such as Zay Flowers and Josh Downs led them to Douglas. His vertical burst and double moves are similar to Flowers.

I was watching some of his highlight tape too. He’s insanely shifty and has that joystick-like ability like Hill. If he’s 50% of TH (and 1,000% the human), the Pats may have a sneaky-useful late round toy to work with here.

I think he's pretty interesting and realistically might have a better chance to make the team than Boutte. One guy he's worth comparing to is Josh Downs, the receiver from UNC, whom the Pats passed on earlier in the draft. Both are on the smaller side but while Downs plays exclusively in the slot, Douglas can also line up on the outside so I wonder if that's something that stood out to them. Also, Douglas posted an amazing vertical (91%) and insane broad jump (99%). If you watch his highlights, there are a few plays where he actually leaps over defenders.

One problem with Downs is his weight. He's very lean and I wonder if the Pats thought he wouldn't be able to block. Douglas is actually smaller but weighs slightly more. The problem with Douglas is that while he looks shifty on some highlights he performed poorly in the 3 cone (34%) and shuttle (35%) so not sure what to make of that.

Based on his highlights his burst is a huge threat so his twitchy nature makes players miss, even without elite 3-cone times. I want to see this guy running jet sweeps and reverses in preseason.

Yeah, early on he could be used as a gadget guy, and also has experience returning punts and kickoffs. Here's a good article on the ways the Pats might use him:

Also, a funny anecdote, can't remember where I read it but when Flowers got injured at the Shrine Bowl and Douglas subbed in for him, Flowers looked on and said [paraphrasing] , "Who is that guy? He looks like me out there."

Douglas is up to 30 catches for 361 yards, on pace for a 50 catch/700 yard season. He has yet to score a TD.

His pace over the last 4 games equates out to a full season of 85/925.

Definitely think he is a legit asset at this point. Not a high end one but a nice complementary piece if they can ever find that true #1 difference maker.

Him and Marvin Harrison Jr (if they end up missing the 2 top QBs) would be a great situation for a vet to come in and develop them for a season while a development like Pennix or Nix QB learns.

He's pretty darned good already. He'd be going bonkers if he had a better QB throwing the ball.

Like the previous posts have said, you have to believe the Pats have a legitimate asset in Douglas.
Here are the most promising rookie seasons for Pats receivers over the last decade (targets/receptions/yards/TDs)

Aaron Dobson (2013): 72/37/519/4
Malcolm Mitchell (2016): 48/32/401/4
Jakobi Meyers (2019): 41/26/359/0

Douglas fits right in with 55/36/410/0, especially impressive considering there are still 6 games left and he's not exactly catching passes from Tom Brady.

That reminded me of the “I think I broke his freakin’ neck” play from The Longest Yard. When do they hand out midweek fines?

Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me.

I’m a fan of him in So Fine, although I think roughly half the people in the world who have seen it are either in my family or watched it with my family.

People today might mostly recognize him as Happy's boss who becomes a big fan of his in Happy Gilmore

Appears to be no NFL fine to Cam Brown for the clothesline tackle of Demario Douglas, resulting in his second concussion of the season. We'll see what the official NFL fines report says tomorrow afternoon, but I'm not optimistic, because... it's the NFL. I did a shallow dive into the NFL rule book, and the way I read it, this should've been called as illegal use of hands by defense (Rule 12; article 7).
https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-rulebook/#
ARTICLE 7. ILLEGAL USE OF HANDS BY DEFENSE
It is a foul if a defensive player thrusts his hands or arms forward above the frame of an opponent to forcibly contact him on the neck, face, or head.
Note: Contact in close-line play is not a foul, unless it is direct and forcible, or prolonged.
Penalty: For Illegal Use of Hands by the Defense: Loss of five yards and an automatic first down.

Unfortunately, calls (or non-calls) like this are up to the discretion of on-field officials, and seem to be completely arbitrary. The hit pissed me off enough, but the post-hit celebration with the loose ball bouncing around should (at least) have resulted in a reaming by the coaching staff.

It's hard not to love Pop. But the reality is he's not just a poor man's Tyreek Hill. He's not close to that.

Which frankly, is a fucking awesome result given his draft spot. The problem is, he's a #1 receiver on this team, when at best, he should be a #3/#4, who plays in the right match-ups. Kind of like the the match-up that saw Isaiah McKenzie grab 11 balls against Myles fucking Bryant.
