You don't have to do much research. The supporting details are available in Tomase's piece which is available in the first post in this thread. The last thing in the world, as a newbie here, I intended to do was piss anyone off or offend anyone. I foolishly assumed that anyone posting on this thread would have gone to the enormous trouble of reading all of the posts from the beginning. Thanks for the friendly welcome to the board.
Many years ago when I was a newbie here I took a beating from a few guys over some of my early posts. There used to be a well respected member here who went by the name of mabrowndog who I reached out to via PM to ask if I was out of line. I'll share that dog wrote back to tell me to that unfortunately at times some of the membership act like self important A holes when it comes to new members here. I share this not to call out CarolinaBeerGuy, but rather to serve as a gentle reminder that all of us who been around for a while would be doing SoSH a service to be a bit more inquiring of posts we don't understand and encouraging in engaging lurkers who aren't offensive in their efforts.

The idea that the Red Sox have a monopoly on all the racist, stupid players in the league is silly. Hell, Pillar just got here.
I'm not disagreeing with that at all, just saying maybe there was something to Mookie not being comfortable in Boston. I wasn't buying it before, but I'm not so sure now.
Or, maybe it was just money. Who the hell knows? I do know Tilt seems like a dick.

Thanks, and I sincerely mean that. Honestly, if my post had been inflammatory or seemingly designed to produce emotional reaction, I'd have better understood the response... Anyway, I didn't come here to engage in adversarial give and take. While I understand that contentious exchanges can be a natural result of opinionated discourse, I also realize that sometimes newcomers to all social situations are better seen than heard. Since no one here can be literally seen or heard, I think I'll just retreat, read and lay low for awhile.

Yeah, I think its an over-reach to link this to Mookie's departure. He and Boras clearly always intended to go to the open market, they traded him, and then COVID uncertainty was likely a big factor in his signing long term with the Dodgers. A perfect storm of events. What Brazier re-tweeted was repugnant, and deserves al the scorn that is being heaped on it, and he needs to be gone, but I'm not at all convinced clubhouse culture played in any role in how things shook out with Mookie.

My emotions may have been running high, so mea culpa. In the future, please don’t post cryptic info. We are a pretty informed fan base, but we also need access to the information. Just don’t assume we have all read the article to which you’re alluding. I assumed, incorrectly, that you were referring to something outside the OP article. I’m honestly not trying to run anyone off.

Who was the unnamed rapist that @threecy was referring to? Was it Verdugo? Lowe? Cordero? Manny? In order to defend myself against the baseless claims I need to know who I supposedly defended.

So this is a shitty last place team playing in an abridged season with no fans, going completely nowhere, and they are just going to roll with Brasier and Pillar with shitty half assed apologies, and no statement that the team recognizes juts how shitty this is in light of current events. I’m a 20 year season ticket holder and I think I might be done. Baseball just isn’t that important to me anymore.

Thanks. Understood. The last thing I'm intending to be is combative. I did assume most had read Tomase's piece which referred to Brasier's prior.matter. It was a mistake for me to have done so. I recently joined this board because, frankly, it seems to have an informed group of members. I want to be respectful of those who have been here for awhile and, at the same time, enjoy spirited back and forth discourse. As I indicated earlier, I'll retreat for awhile and just observe. Anyway, thanks for your response.

Yeah this ownership group is really destroying a lot of the goodwill they’ve built up over the years.

I wonder to what extent ownership has made a calculation that releasing Brasier/Pillar might actually alienate a significant portion of Sox fans (40%?) who tacitly agree with or even applaud what these players are saying. Deplorables like baseball, too.

I agree with your sentiment here, but the trade deadline is in about 24 hours. Brasier is a volatile high leverage reliever with 3+ years team control who still has an option left, and just mowed down Soto and the heart of the Nationals lineup (edit: twice). Pillar has also had a nice couple of games and would be a huge upgrade for Cleveland, the Brewers or the White Sox.

In my mind, Brasier’s move was abhorrent and Pillar’s was ignorant, but I don’t see either to be so egregious that it’s unethical to shop them for a valuable return. (The Osuna and Chapman trades were much more dubious, though I recognize how slippery this sort of moral relativism can be.) Either way, I doubt either are on the team in 24 hours.

The insanity of deliberately using a straw man argument?

Not a single person has advocated getting rid of him because of his views, and that has been pointed out several times to the three people who have illegitimately argued that fallacy and yet not one of you have come back to walk it back or try another path.

It's long been known there are people on the red Sox with 'views' on the Trump right of the political spectrum. People post about that knowledge all the time. And yet, no one has started a thread like this calling for them to go.
You're wrong. Read the thread for the proof.

I just re-read the entire thread, front-to-back and back-to-front. While some early posts merely called for him to be removed without any explanation, I found no post advocating to cut him because of his beliefs. I found plenty of posts explaining that he should be gone for team chemistry, held accountable for what he said, but not one advocated to cut him because of his beliefs.

Perhaps I misread, but if you're convinced, why don't you cite the post that you think proves your claim? Otherwise, you're begging the question at best and gaslighting at worst.

I also just re-read the entire thread, front-to-back and back-to-front, and found similarly.

Some just don’t understand basic concepts like the difference between “having views” and “taking actions based on views”.

Of course, it should not be lost on many that in a thread castigating a Red Sox for being an asshole for obnoxious, trolling behavior, that some posters here on SoSH who have historically gotten free passes for their obnoxious and trolling posting purely because they’ve been around forever, are offended by it.

Certainly, at minimum, a post of “you’re wrong. Read the thread for proof.”. . . . . . should not be worthy of main board posting.

Doubt they'll just cut him, and not sure how they'll trade him. If he's viewed as too toxic for our team, what other team will give up anything of value for him?

It's kind of remarkable that the Red Sox pretty much let this slide with barely any public acknowledgement:
“He was upset and regretful about the entire thing,” Bloom said. ” … This wasn’t something that we felt warranted discipline. He made a mistake, but once he did, I think he took the right steps to try and make amends.”

I need more popcorn maybe. I think (I use that work loosly btw) Blooms statement about a players bad use of judgement and to management it's water under the bridge is enough. If it was me (me being Bloom) I might have fined him and sent that money to a charity that fits the crime as a reminder that this kind of nonsense will not be tolerated.

Bloom has decided that the best way to play this for the franchise is to move past it. That's a disappointment to me, but probably for the best in terms of the long-term view that he has to take.

We know who Ryan Brasier is. And it's a shame, because I rather liked him before this.

Edit: Per abs direction.

I haven't watched a single pitch since Braiser's incident and I won't be until he's off the team. The Red Sox organization has a lot to answer for -- sure, they can't change the past, but they certainly can learn from it.

They can't change the fact that they were shamefully the last team to integrate.
They can't fully right the wrongs of the Yawkey ownership even if they rename the street.
There's no erasing the recent incidents at Fenway from memory.

But this ownership group and front office can pledge to do better -- they can decide to lead in this era, to be a part of this Civil Rights Movement after abjectly failing to participate in the last one. And so far, they are failing.

I replied to a Red Sox Foundation email that was pushing Jackie Robinson Weekend with comments that although I am very aware of all the great work the RSF does for inner city youth and adults with the Red Sox Scholars and Dimock Center and RBI program support, that the lack of response to the Brasier incident was extremely disappointing to me and that the team's embrace of Jackie Robinson this weekend felt hollow to me.

As a white dad of a black 9-year-old boy, the increasing racial divide in this country both exhausts me and horrifies me. My single most important role in life is to protect my son. The fact that so many like Brasier exist within our society has been a mild shock to me over the past 5 years. The fact that so many feel it is OK to publicly express extreme and evil thoughts seemed so unlikely to me, until 5 years ago.

I have always been a proponent that all groups who are discriminated against need the support of the straight, white, male “majority”, in order to be accepted, treated with dignity, and be considered equally as valuable as the assholes who rule society. I have reached a point where I am ashamed to be a straight, white male.

I have been a lifelong Red Sox fan, assigned at birth. It has been a huge part of my identity. It may be DVR, but I watch almost every game. Fenway park has been a special place in my life since my earliest memories. I have read this site daily for almost 20 years, as a source of so much great info, including minor leagues and prospects.

This feels like the last straw for me. Not just Brasier. Pillar seems even worse to me, simply due to him having publicly been called out for his
Bigotry in the past. In may of 2017, Toronto suspended him for 2 games for using an anti-gay slur toward an opposing player. He apologized at the time, but that seems fairly empty in light of current statements.
The fact that a wealthy white male feels no need to “uplift” any particular subset of society shows his true colors. His demographic already has all the advantages and perks of being that of the ruling class.

I am sympathetic to the quandary the Red Sox face in terms of PR, but feel the only correct outcome is to have immediately released both of them. I cannot support them any longer unless stronger action is taken. This will hurt me more than it hurts Sox management, but if enough people force it, positive change can occur.

I remain hopeful for true and lasting changes in our society, and would love to see the Sox be part of that movement. On the other side, I am so proud to be an NBA fan right now, particularly a Celtics fan, and a huge Jaylen Brown fan. I talk with my Son often about Jaylen being a very good basketball player, and an even better human being.

I just want to know if we really want our employers to fire folks because they have views we disagree with.

But if you want to term it firing someone because they're stupid, I'm not sure how professional sports survives.
When the belief is that other people aren't human enough--which is exactly what this is--then you're goddamn right I want employers to fire people for their beliefs.

I disliked David Price ever since he and his then girlfriend used social media to dump on David Ortiz. You can believe it or not, but my dislike of him had zero to do with race, and I think you're pushing it.
So, you know better than David? Cool, cool cool cool cool cool (this one is secretly also my favorite boy-band). Glad to know you're keeping that flame alive for him :eyeroll:

I just want to know if we really want our employers to fire folks because they have views we disagree with.

I mean, I think many of us would be thrilled if our bosses fired the Yankee fans around us. Not only do we disagree with their views, but many of us would classify them as "stupid." Maybe we could round them all up and ship them back south of the border to NY/NJ/Long Island?

I really do enjoy the "do we want to allow a sports team to 'fire' a player?!" This is baseball, a monopoly - this is not real life. You don't experience things like, "I was in a Cumberland Farms several years back. The guy working the register used some nasty language and was very rude to a customer. I complained. The next day he was traded to Shell/Dunkin' combo location in Connecticut for one of the guys who fills your tank and 2lbs of Green Mountain ground beans." In baseball, if you don't like someone and don't want them on your team for any number of reasons, you either complain like many of us are doing, or you transform into Tom Yawkey and time-travel back to the 40-60s.

You can leave a message for the front office at 617-226-6000 ( press 0 for operator) and a very pleasant young woman will listen to you.
Thanks for posting. Just had a nice conversation with her and explained that I wouldn’t be watching any more games until Brasier is disciplined or off the team. She said the organization is tracking all this feedback and passing it along.

In politics, which I know much better, that is the case — Congressional offices really do care about volume of comments from constituents. Obviously a different set of rules apply (we don’t vote on ownership), but just FYI.

edit: @Bertha, thank you for that. I humbly suggest you consider sending that to the organization somehow. It’s powerful and important to share.

Thank you for sharing @Bertha, it helps to put a personal perspective on this situation.
As a father to a 12 and 10 year old, the part of Docs speech that really moved me is when he mentions “the talk” that black parents have with their kids regarding interacting with the Police. I can’t fathom having to do that.

Hi Bertha -- thanks for sharing. It's a good perspective to have here.

My sister in law, who is white, has a black son. It is simply staggering and heartbreaking to hear about all the things that they have to think about that are miles off my radar. She mentioned mater-of-factly not too long ago about how they started to educate him when he was 3 about what a receipt is. The concern is that he will invariably be accused of shoplifting and that can escalate for him into a dangerous situation. I don't think my kids have spent more than a second thinking about receipts. Sometimes protecting our children feels like a full time and overwhelming job and it's hard to appreciate how much more overwhelming it can be for others. It just breaks my heart almost to the point of paralysis.

I'm really sorry that you have to deal with having something that you care about -- the Red Sox -- add to that burden. They have not covered themselves in glory here. Closer to covered themselves in shit. It's an absolute shame, and for all the encouragement that I've seen in the last several months it's really rotten to get glimpses into how far we still have to go.

How is Bloom moving past the issue? By ignoring it? By not calling out Brasier (and Pillar, for that matter) for his public statements? That seems like laziness at best and an insensitive abdication of GM duties at worst.
And exactly how does ignoring this issue benefit the Sox as a franchise in the long term?
To me, the willingness to sweep this under the rug says a lot about Bloom and Red Sox upper management, and as a Sox fan I am decidedly NOT happy.

If not now, then when? Quite frankly, if Bloom cannot show leadership on this matter, then I would rather he resign.

They may not be ignoring it, it could be simply a question of timing. IMO, it highly probable Bloom is trying to deal both Brasier and Pillar so I suspect he doesn’t want to say anything that could lower their market value or complicate a trade. Right now the best thing they could do would be to get both players off of the team which would make everyone happy. If that means not calling out the two players now, then I would do that in a heartbeat. If you can’t make a trade, then you can still discipline the players; issue a statement saying like “we have read Lose’s email and we take his comments/ concerns seriously. after a careful revIew of the two players tweets, we are taking the following action ( insert action here). The Red Sox does not condone racism in any form and blah, blah, blah.” Regardless, both are on one-year contracts so I suspect neither will be on the team next year.

I'm fine with them trying to have the best of both worlds, and attempting to get something back for Brazier at least, in a trade. But if that fails, he needs to be shown the door immediately. And the more I think about it, Pillar too. At first look, I felt his comments fell more in the stupid column, rather than the offensive one. But given his history, and the level of oblivious, shit-headed entitlement contained in those comments, and the callous disrespect making those comments shows to JBJ, and many others in and outside of the organization, he can hit the bricks as well.

Trading one or both of them just feels wrong to me. The Red Sox would actually get something of value out of removing these two assholes from the team and they also get to avoid dealing with it publicly in a way that shows they want to lead on this issue instead of BLM just happening around them. And the two players get to go play for a team a whole lot better than the Sox and avoid any kind of accountability for their actions. And I would assume if they are traded it won't be accompanied by any kind of statement repudiating both guys because that's sort of a slap in the face to the organization trading for them. I'd rather have them just both be released.
