Although Sarkisian will unlikely be the disastrous hire Lane Kiffin was, I can't believe they settled for someone with such a sparse résumé. Sarkisian never won as many Pac-10/12 games in Washington as Orgeron did in a partial season this fall. He gets a reprieve for having to deal with the wasteland left behind by Willingham, but after five seasons those excuses are no longer valid.

This hire doesn't really worry me much as a Trojan hater... I'm surprised they didn't go with Orgeron, who really seemed to turn them around in the short term and obviously knows the team better. Do you think they retain him if he beats UCLA, or did it not matter?

Orgeron was 10-25 in his only other head coaching gig. It's underwhelming name-wise for USC, but I'll wait to see what Sarkisian does with USC talent.

I don't know that Sarkisian is much of a hardass, but the USC players apparently loving Orgeron to death is probably not the best thing for a program in Los Angeles on probation. That coupled with Orgeron's alleged sketchy recruiting tactics could mean them getting nuked.

You really have to wonder if it was 50/50 based on the UCLA game. I mean, I don't know how you could not hire Orgeron after taking that shit show to a 9 win season, especially after being only a couple weeks removed from a big win over Stanford. In my opinion, you make the switch if you can land a true game changer but not for a re-tread like Sarkisian. And given Orgeron's reaction, you have to wonder if he was led to believe that he was going to be the guy. They clearly had both guys in play.

I don;t think he was ever really a serious consideration. He lost to ND and UCLA, 2 of their biggest rivals and he was part of the Kiffin regime. They wanted to clean house. Plus he had some issues at Ole Miss and I am sure that was in the back of their minds.  Sarkisian was on Pete's staff and knows the culture at SC. Back to the future I guess. Orgeron may end up at Wake as was suggetsed upstream. Who knows?

Yeah, it's not like Sarkisian had anyone sketchy on his staff at Washington (btw, Lupoi is coming with him to USC).

Totally underwhelmed by the hire. Surprised. I don't think Orgeron is or was the solution, but I don't think Sarkisian is the answer. Haden really shanked this one, in my opinion. USC could have done better.

They should have thrown the world at Chris Petersen. I don't get why he stays at Boise State when he can have any big job. He could rule at USC.

With no chance at National Title or less of a chance of a major bowl with the new system in place. He has tapped out at Boise State in my view.

I say this every time, but Petersen's name comes up every time a major job comes up and usually, he's not interested. I'd figure one of the reasons is still his son's brain tumor. You wonder if he'll ever move at this point though.

Washington is interviewing UCLA coach, Jim Mora. Mora played his college ball at Washngton so it wouldn't be completely surprising if he took that job. It would be a very interesting merry go round if UCLA ended up losing their coach due to USC's coaching hire. Personally, I think UCLA is the better job just because of location and last I heard, the alumni wanting the school to pour more resources into the program. Washington's stadium is great though without the track.

EDIT: Hm reports may have been wrong:

Saw the report that Jim Mora is in Washington w AD Woodward tonight, but just told by source he's actually in Calif recruiting

He wasn't. Reports say Sumlin was the target but he didn't want to leave A&M.

A&M is a very good job. SEC. Great fan base. Huge recruiting base with Texas, Louisiana close by and Oklahoma to the north. University is also putting huge money into a Kyle Field upgrade to over 100,000 seats.

Feel like it fits in here more than the Coaching Carousel (even though this is pretty much a carousel). Anyway:

BFeldmanCBS
#BoiseState coach Chris Petersen is interviewing with #Washington tonight, source told CBS.
12/5/13 11:20 PM

SIPeteThamel
While his record is sterling, Petersen's issues are dealing with media and interacting with boosters. Those are real issues.
12/5/13 11:37 PM

BFeldmanCBS @SIPeteThamel That would've been an issue at USC with how open that school wants to be. Life on the stage.
12/5/13 11:49 PM

It will be interesting where this goes.

Absolutely baseless accusations reaking of sour grapes from a fan of a rival program? Mark this down as the day Stanford arrived as a true national power!

Have we ever been caught for anything? Googling "Stanford football scandal" brings up a lot about Jonathan Martin, something about a list of easy classes that athletes take (gasp!), and then mostly positive articles and/or those decrying scandals at other, ahem, Pac-12 schools.

I'm genuinely curious as to what you mean by this. The only Stanford player I can think of with ties to PEDs is Richard Sherman. What am I missing?

I wouldn't attempt to speak for him, but maybe he's referring somehow to the lawsuit filed in the late 80s that let Stanford avoid NCAA drug-testing for about 5 years?

I would guess he's suggesting that Shannon Turley runs an unclean S&C program. It certainly is remarkable that so many relatively lightly recruited athletes have become so physically powerful/dominant on the o-line and the defensive front seven, but until Trent Murphy screams place at the table and banging his head through a windshield I'm just going to assume it's because they have a particularly good strength coach.

My dad really liked the way Jamila Wideman played basketball. Smart, tough little point guard. He thought she was cute, and that I would invariably date her.

I never had the heart to tell him that I... wasn't exactly her type.

I had to look this up because I had never heard of this: http://news.stanford.edu/pr/94/940131Arc4473.html

During the injunction, Stanford went 33-34-2 under Jack Elway and Bill Walsh.

I actually had a little crush on her myself. Her dad was a professor in Amherst at the time I was going to college, and I had a journalism professor that wrote a great book about her state champion basketball team. I thought she was great.

Yeah. I just wasn't her type. Why is a pass-first point guard ever going to date a guy who shoots less than 40% from the field? I didn't even bother.

Jessica Mendoza, on the other hand... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Mendoza - I mean, I basically should have just told her upfront that even though I was 19 and not ready to commit, I knew I wanted kids with great bat speed, and therefore we should have been together forever.

I love my wife, but frankly her hand speed sucks, her pitch recognition is dogshit, her stride has ALWAYS been too long no matter how much I yell at her to shorten that shit, and genetically my kids would have been a lot better off had I snookered Jessica into making a mistake by dating me.

EDIT: I just looked at her online, and while it's absolutely true that 9 out of 10 girls in California are attractive and the tenth goes to Stanford, the pictures don't do her justice. She was (and in the world with which I'm comfortable, still is) a total smokeshow. A knockout with a brutal top hand and a glove to match... I was smitten.

The heart wants what the heart wants. Kevin Smith made a movie about this. Also, that one with Omar Epps.

Well, a hell of an effort by the Trojans today, it will be interesting to see who comes back. Supposedly Marquise Lee hasn't even applied for a draft evaluation, but he would be a fool to stay. Bailey, Ukoh, Grimbel and Shaw should all probably stay, since they should be able to improve their stock.

In other news, Bowl game winning coach Clay Helton will be back as Sark's offensive coordinator:

USC offensive coordinator Clay Helton, who guided the Trojans to a 45-20 victory over Fresno State on Saturday in the Las Vegas Bowl, will be retained by new Coach Steve Sarkisian, The Times has learned.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that Helton would remain on staff.
Sarkisian previously announced that receivers coach Tee Martin would be part of his staff.
Sarkisian implemented a no-huddle, hurry-up offense at Washington this season and plans to run it next season with the Trojans.
Helton, 41, was offensive coordinator at Memphis before coming to USC in 2010 and has experience running a no-huddle offense.

Tee Martin is supposedly a recruiting force, so it is good that they are keeping him around.

Next year is the bottom of the scholarship trough, with only 15 available. After that, SC can go back to recruiting full classes rather than watching Mora, Shaw and Graham add those extra ten kids to their depth.

"I am going to pursue Ed here one more time," Sarkisian told the "Trojan Brunch" show on ESPNLA 710. "I thought about him again after the game on the ride home. I think when emotions get settled down, and I know that was an emotional time for Ed and not getting named the head coach when he thought he should have been deservedly so, I would have felt the same way. When the emotions settle down, Ed's a great Trojan and he's meant a lot to the Trojan family and if we can have that opportunity for him to be part of this football program and be here with us, we'd love to have him."

Sarkisian has more motivation to reach out to Orgeron after news surfaced this week that Tosh Lupoi, his defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Washington was being investigated for potential rules violations after he allegedly paid for tutoring and online classes for a recruit.

Yes, we wouldn't want student athletes getting any more money to further their education.  BRAVO NCAA!

Yeah, I'm sure it was all about education; that's why Lupoi gave him straight cash in a coffee cup. While we're on the topic, shame on the NCAA for investigating the Netwon family. Auburn was just trying to build a church for Cecil's congregation.
