Interesting guy. Until the absolute insanity that is Jhoan Duran, Sawamura threw the hardest splitter on earth. That's pretty cool.

But one thing about having an improving farm system is that those winter 40-man roster spots become a lot more valuable, and it isn't at all clear that somebody like Sawamura is really worth protecting over, say, Frank German. I expect there's enough there that he'll be in somebody's bullpen next season — maybe ours!

Sure. His becoming a FA is a "fairly puzzling series of decisions."

It’s not the only reason, but I imagine the pitch clock will make both other teams as well as Sawamura think twice about seeking a 2023 MLB opportunity. I think he follows Daisuke, Koji, Tanaka et al back to Japan for the remainder of his career.
