Chris Hogan, who left Sunday's win over the Chargers with a shoulder issue, was not present. Marcus Cannon and Malcom Brown were also missing. Cannon left the Chargers game with an ankle issue, and Brown suffered an ankle injury against the Falcons in Week 7.

Ghost also missing..

FWIW (and maybe this is already out there) but I know someone close to Hogan who says he’s out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in his shoulder.

My son who is 12 broke his shoulder playing the exact same sport and it only took 4 weeks for the bone to heal. I imagine Hogan will have access to similar medical resources.
So send me $5.
;)

Kidding aside that sucks. Does Dorsett get burn?

WBW I dislocated my right shoulder/broke my arm playing HS football (senior year) and it took about 6 weeks to fully heal.but it ended my tackle football career.

When I heard that Hogan was heard to have "screamed" on the sidelines, it reminded me of that unique pain I felt and my reaction when my shoulder was popped back into place.

Can’t we just keep Gilmore on the bench and pretend he’s still concussed?

Because there’s no way this prolonged concussion (most players return in 1-2 weeks) was anything more than him taking time to get back in the playbook, right?

Was there ever any news on how Gilmore sustained his concussion or did BB assume he was concussed after seeing the tape on Gilmore's inability to retain any knowledge of the Pat's scheme and coverages?
Pretty sure he was “concussed.”

I sure hope they dont cut bait on Gilmore yet. This defense has a much better chance of getting to where it needs to be with Gilmore playing up to his talent level than with Jonathan Bademosi playing 70 snaps a game. They had to believe in the talent level given the contract they gave Gilmore and BB is a pretty good coach, so I dont think he'd write off coaching up that talent so soon. That's not to say he automatically goes out and plays every snap, but I hope they're working towards that as the end goal.

Id actually guess Gilmore was really oncussed. Given Rowe was out too the Pats were pretty thin at corner. I dont think BB would have any issue just benching Gilmore. Also, using concussion as the fake injury seems like it would be sort of silly given the Pats history with the league office and that its the (only?) injury that has league protocols to follow. If they were faking an injury it seems like groin or hamstring or something would be easier to use.

Maybe the stats bear out something different but my only recollection of McLellin contributing anything beyond what [insert random linebacker] would have done is jumping over the LS to block kicks.

Herald says it is a concussion. Obviously concussions dont have standard recovery times, but missing the whole season with one is pretty scary.
Right. I thought he had been practicing though so i wonder if he was cleared and either got another one, had symptoms re-emerge, or if he sustained some other injury.

JFC, Gilmore was terrible, but he could still cover one-on-one decently and a number of the communication errors looked to me to be on McCourty and other members of the secondary. I don't think anyone played very well consistently on the whole defense those first few weeks, except maybe Trey Flowers.

Gilmore healthy and more familiar with the team and the D, and other guys having settled in around him is a welcome thing.

Based on the fact that Hightower wasn't placed on IR until after McClellin had his set back, it is safe to assume they were waiting for McClellin to be active again. If they had put Hightower on IR a couple of weeks ago, they could have signed RJ Francois back then and this would have given him a couple more weeks in our system.

Not blaming the F.O. just pointing out the chain reaction of events and how injured players continue to impact the roster construction.

It sucks that the NFL never addresses the IR/ Roster spot issue. It's such a violent game, and it has the strictest IR rules. Should be unlimited spots with eligibility to return. Or have 4,8,12 week IR's. Anything is better than the current system.

And it's not even really in the NFL's interest - if a marquis star gets hurt and placed on IR but rehabs faster than normal, it really doesn't make sense that they still might have to sit out the rest of the year and the playoffs, which just makes the product that much worse. I get that the NFL is trying to avoid roster manipulation, but I feel like there are ways to address that while still allowing more players to come back if they heal faster than expected.

It makes absolutely no sense. I’ve always thought the NFL should go to something like a 4 or 6 week IR and allow the team to replace the player with someone off the practice squad, then the team runs down a PS player for the duration of the time on IR. Allows for some flexibility, but doesn’t expand rosters overall.

It took me longer than I care to admit to not knowing what team "Marquis Star" plays for.

Yeah, I get that part. I would consider it to be not helpful for the Pats, but I think calling it a big blow is a bit of a stretch. He really is a JAG who knows the system. He would help, but he ain't gonna be saving the day. Nor are they screwed without him.

I'm assuming that the strict IR protocol is a compromise between getting rehabbed players back playing and avoiding a situation where a team is stashing players and using IR as a late season restocking pool..

Correct. If a player placed on IR returns to practice it counts as using 1 of the 2 spots. Just because he had a setback they suddenly won't count it. Now one of Valentine or Mitchell won't be coming back for sure.
Are you sure about this? I've searched for the official rules but couldn't find anything concrete, the only thing I could find was a CBS article which then links to this PFT article which includes the following paragraph:
Now, teams could potentially use some strategy and gamesmanship in deciding which injured player could make a late-season comeback. Decisions could be made based on roster strength and depth, or in the case of multiple players being potentially eligible to return, waiting until the last minute before a weekly activation deadline could keep opponents guesssing.
Note that this rule change predates the change to allow two players to return from IR but is supposedly still valid.

This to me implies that you don't have to designate someone to return when he returns to practice, only when you activate him to the 53.

I would assume they signed RJF because Brown still has issues with his ankle, so even without the already pointed out issue that he wasn't released that far back I doubt this had anything to do with the McClellin situation.

The spot is gone. From Miguel Benzan at the Boston Sports Journal:

What does this mean for the Patriots? They’ve used one of their two designated to return spots, and didn’t get the benefit of the player.

To support my contention the Patriots have used one DTR-designation on McClellin, I present this quote from NFLCommunications.Com italicizing the key portions of the quote.

“At any time after six weeks have elapsed since a player was placed on Reserve/Injured or Reserve/Non-Football Injury/Illness, each club is permitted to designate two players for return from either list to the club’s 53-player Active/Inactive List. A player who is “Designated For Return” must have suffered a major football-related injury or non-football-related injury or illness after reporting to training camp and must have been placed on the applicable Reserve List after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the day after the final roster reduction. A player whom the club wishes to designate for return is permitted to return to practice for a period not to exceed 21 days. The club is required to notify the League office that the player has been “Designated For Return” on the first day the player begins to practice. The player cannot be returned to the Active/Inactive List until eight weeks have elapsed since the date he was placed on Reserve.”

As you see, there’s no mention the player has to be activated. The mentioned requirement is designating the player on the day of his first practice.

I was hoping they would stay out west somewhere, it makes sense.
Air Force is at 7258 feet. Stadium in Mexico City is at 7382. BB will probably find some way to add another 125 feet to the Air Force experience.

No Cannon to block Von Miller? What could possibly go wrong?
Waddle has been in this position before: http://www.espn.com/blog/detroit-lions/post/_/id/3444/waddle-goes-from-unknown-to-nfl-starter

Still, Texas Tech's coaches planned on redshirting him. Throughout the season, injuries decimated the offensive line. With no other options and Texas A&M the next opponent, Moore and Mike Leach decided to start Waddle, ending his redshirt.

His matchup that week: Von Miller.

"We were like, 'Waddle, he's our only chance,' " Moore said. "So we go into the game with all these plans, we're going to use the running backs, we're going to chip him, we're going to do this, we're going to do that. We go out there early with all these plans to help him.

"And the kid, he does a great job against him. We ended up not having to do all that stuff.”

Miller had three tackles and two sacks that day. Not bad considering Waddle had not played before. In reality, it was the beginning of his path to the NFL. He started every game of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons with Texas Tech.

Nitpick alert......But being a guy who spent 2 years in the springs I didnt think this is incorrect. Falcon Stadium is 6621 Feet ASL. Mexico City seems to be @7280. (According to Wiki and Googs)

IMHExp the change of a few hundred feet doesnt matter.

So You are totally correct thats its smart and prudent to utilize facilities that keep you in the same ballpark Elevations wise. Just that those numbers didnt look right at first blush.
