“@mikefreemanNFL: Schefter just said long snapper he knows last year carried a paper clip into games and used it to deflate football before snapping it.”

Kickers want deflated K-balls (the only balls long snappers get to play with)? Makes little sense to me.

Wait, and this isn't a story because? How long had Schefter been sitting on this?

Because it's hearsay and the snapper's name isn't public.

Also because it's not a player on the New England roster. If that were the case then hearsay be damned.

Umm, because taking minimal amounts of air pressure out of a football before you kick it have nothing to do with the integrity of the game. The Brady Trial is about the integrity of the game. Geez. Get with it man. Integrity. The Shield.

Is Schefter just coming by this knowledge now?

Because if he had put some of this out in the last few months, there may be a somewhat different take on all this.

Any particular team?
How many long snappers does he know?

Perhaps Schefter knows the NFL is fucked and is doing damage control so that they can say "see everyone does it!!!!!"

First Doug Flutie gets Brady's helmet, while he's wearing it on the field and hears communication signals, now he's deflating balls!

This would make the most sense, which means it's probably not true.

Eh, knowing the NFL, this would give them cause to uphold the suspension because obviously Brady is lying.

Where is Schefter saying this? Is Freeman listening to a national report, or is Schefter on a Boston radio station?

Schefter doesn't usually do damage control for others. He sticks to facts.

But I'm confused, why is Freeman reporting this? Where is Schefter saying this? Is he on air at the moment?

Did he at least hinted if those are Patriot players?
He did not, but he did sum up by saying something to the effect..."see, this sort of thing goes on everywhere.." implying it was not the Pats.

For the love of God Adam Schefter please at least tweet out that the long snapper and backup QB were not on the Pats.  Don't give up your source or info, just limit it to 31 teams.  Please! Give us this one, just one!

sports journalists are too cute. he'll throw this report out there, but not name names / teams. accountability is delightful!

it's like "want to find out the team? tune in NEXT MONDAY ON RAW!"

You can drop "sports" from there. No journalist is ever going to name his source, nor the team. Asking him to out his source as a "long snapper on the Chicago Bears", or a "backup QB on the Tennessee Titans" is akin to asking a political correspondent to identify their source as "A sitting governor from Wyoming". I'd settle for it being clarified as "Not on the Patriots"

in light of what's going on today, yeah, that'd be nice.

I'm having a hard time imagining how a long snapper could let some air out of a football with a paper clip before snapping it. Does he run up to the line of scrimmage, sort of hide the paper clip with one hand while inserting it with the other (so the defense and officials can't see) let a bit air out, remove the clip and grip the ball for the snap? That doesn't seem feasible.

It does if no one, literally no one, gives a fuck about football air pressure.

Yep, that doesn't even remotely pass the smell test.  How many people are focused directly on that ball at the exact time he's paper-clipping it? Not to mention that the defense can't line up over him, so that's a clear view of the ball up the middle of the field too.  There is literally no chance this is happening.

But a guy can take a bag of footballs, deflate them by 0.3 PSI and get them back in the bag all within 90 seconds!!!

I would think it would have to be taped to the inside of a finger, and then he deflates as he positions the ball...

...positioning the clip perfectly...

...and taking out just enough...

...while everyone is watching.

Never mind that the kickers would want the balls firm...

...and that the clip, taped to the hand or not, would be super-safe...

Yeah, not likely.

Good thing SoSH has a punter.  I swear to God, if there was a news story about the manhood rite of some remote tribe in Paupa New Guinea, there would be someone here who could say "Oh yeah, I did it, and the thing is..."

So, Chuck Z:

What would be the benefit of this?

I can think of two potentially: the snap would be easier for the punter to field (??), and the ball would be a little softer, which might help with control/direction (??)

But then, it wouldn't go as far (???)

. Yeah, Schefter is likely getting played here. Too bad he couldn't collaborate with someone like Don Banks on stuff.

This is 100% accurate. And why I love this place.

Awaiting Chuck Z's response with bated breath...

I actually have a friend who grew up "in the bush" in PNG. He lives over there and is an activist working against deforestation. I'd be more than happy to forward any questions about life in PNG on to him while we wait on whatever new twist is coming in our saga of depressurized footballs.

Maybe the long snapper only takes air out in specific situations, such as punting for field position, or trying to get the ball as close to the goal line as possible.

Still, seems highly unlikely.

How do you even release air with a paper clip? There's still a seal around the paper clip when inserted with the rubber gasket. There's no hole for air to escape like there is with the ball needle. Am I being obtuse? Wouldn't be the first time.

Because, just like the cheating so rampant that the league was forced to standardize the footballs used in the kicking game to all be brand new, nobody cares about a smidgen per square inch of gauge pressure. Nobody cared in 1999, nobody cared in the time between, nobody cares now.

There is an unrelated hubbub about the voodoo magics used by Bill Belichick and Tom Brady to win all the time, but that is about voodoo magics, not air pressure.

If you stick the paper clip in perfectly perpendicular, yes, the seal would likely hold. Now tilt the paper clip and....pshhhhh.

I believe a SoSH member unintentionally demonstrated this when he conducted his home football/weather/gas law experiment back in January. He was getting inconsistent results. He was leaving the pressure gauge in the footballs during the experiment. I suggested he only insert them for as long as necessary to take a reading because it could be causing leakage - Just because the needle *appears* to be perpendicular, it might not be. This fix did the trick.

Maybe it's different w a football but I tried that with my basketball and the paper clip just bends, seal stays. Standard office use clips are pretty flimsy, perhaps our anonymous long snapperwas using a heavier gauge of paper clip?
