Not here
His retirement really isn't going the way he expected, I don't think.

I never particularly cared for him, but he did great things for my team, and he's not a Yankee so I hope things work out well.

He doesn't say what kind of cancer he has. I don't think that's a good thing.

It's hard to believe it was just a little over 6 years ago, he was pitching in a World Series game. It seems like so much longer than that.

Yeah, no details at all.  This struck me as odd but not necessarily bad.  I don't know what to make of it.

Or, it is an easily treatable cancer and he likes the PR. It wouldn't surprise me if it was, like, a mole that got removed and tested positive.

Now, that's simply conjecture and I sound like a emotionless asshole because I don't much care for Schilling the Blowhard.

I hope he's okay, cancer fucking sucks no matter what. You're a tough SOB, Curt. Get well.

I just hope they caught it early enough to treat it and he'll be back to normal somewhat. Horrible news.

I have to think if it was small, ESPN wouldn't use terms like "whenever he is ready to return."

Reading between the lines, this seems really bad to me. Hopefully I am wrong.

Chewing tobacco was my first thought as well. Schilling the political blogger, Schilling the businessman, and Schilling the hypocrite (at the intersection of the 2) can suck my ass. But Schilling the loudmouth, Schilling the "fuck the Yankees, go ahead and sew some bits of me shut so I can pitch" is one of my favorite athletes ever. Watch one of the 2004 DVDs and try to not love the guy. I wish him nothing but the best.

Sorry about your mom.

Just seeing this news...no matter what type or level of seriousness, I'm sorry to hear about it and am hoping for a quick and complete recovery for him...and condolences to you, asimonetti, on your recent loss.

As we saw in October of 2004 he's a pretty tough SOB. That'll help him during this time for sure, and I wish him the best.  Get well, Gehrig38.

And remember, lots of people beat cancer all the time.  Why Not You, Too?

I have a close friend who, despite being a fun, witty, brilliant guy, has, over the years, devolved into quite a cynical asshole. Nonetheless, the awesomeness part of my friendship with him helps me to get over his offensiveness.

I kind of think of G38 in a similar way. Sure, he's done and said some things that rub me the wrong way, but if he is a jerk, he'll always be our jerk. Not only our jerk, but one of the 25. I'd feel bad for anyone who gets the cancer, but I'll feel particularly bad for Schill.

If you still visit this site Gehrig38: "get well".

Edit to make clear in case it isn't already: this post does not intend to apply the adjectives I use for my buddy to also apply to CS. Just an analogy.

I'm sure he appreciates it, even if you "never particularly cared for him".  Cancer sucks.  Hope it's something manageable and hoping for the best.

Curt Schilling came to the Sox with the open and expressed purpose of helping them win their first title in 86 years.  And then he did it.  And he was part of the next title, three years later.

For both I will always be incredibly grateful, without any reservation or without regard to anything off the field.

Life for Curt since he retired has been filled with some very difficult challenges, to say the least.

Here's to him overcoming this one -- likely the biggest one -- fully and speedily.

Curt Schilling played a big part in allowing me to see what I thought I never would, the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series. Twice. For that I will be eternally grateful to him.

Think what you will about his views, public dealings and his persona, but the man help deliver the City of Boston, all of New England and Red Sox Nation something that many of those dear to us never witnessed. Be well Schill.

He's thoughtful, has integrity in owning up to the obligations he undertook, and lived up to his word.  Add in that he was an OK pitcher, and illuminated this site, and all one can say is Godspeed in this fight.

Man, that is shitty news.  The guy has had a brutal go of it recently.  I wish him all the best.  I still have a life-size cardboard Curt from 2004 in my basement.

He had a heart attack in 2011 as well.  Not a great retirement.  Hearing this on the same day as Nomar, Clemens and Pedro are announced to the Red Sox HOF makes me wonder how Clemens gets in ahead of Schilling

There's a lot of things to dislike Schilling for off the field. His championing of the ALS cause is not one of them.

Here's wishing all the best to Curt and his family. Hoping for a quick and speedy recovery. I may not always agree with the guy but it's always entertaining listening to him blow off steam. I would miss that.

I hope he gets well soon. I am also glad he brought attention to ALS, but he sure shut down his foundation real quick when he left the Sox, which always struck me as odd.

He's a blowhard, but he's OUR blowhard.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
I've criticized Schilling in different threads for various things he's done and said.  Whatever.  Health and life are more important than any of that.

So unreserved best wishes to G38, and I hope he gets well soon.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but Schilling strikes me as the type of guy who would say exactly what type of cancer he had if it was something serious and would say "cancer" if it was something that could potentially be removed with a relatively quick procedure.

Cancer is a horrible thing to happen to anyone, regardless of who they are and what they've done with their life.

Curt Schilling was here for two World Series championships (and a great Thanksgiving dinner). He's "One of the 25."
Having him drop in here back when I was just lurking was pretty amazing.

He stepped up big-time for us when we needed it. Time to step up big again.
From one cancer survivor to (hopefully) another, you can do this. Why not us?

Well, the the entire premise or funding of the program was pledging their support “per strikeout” for a given season. Once he retired, there were no more K's and he obviously had a reduced income in which to donate.   Furthermore, I doubt he had time to restructure the charity and raise funds given his new business venture.  My understanding is him and his wife are still active with the ALS Association and Shonda still has her own foundation for skin cancer going.

That's really inappropriate, and kind of assholish, even with the sentences that followed.

Well that's awful. Hopefully it's not something too serious. The article notes ESPN just extended him, so that's helpful.

Yeah, there's a few of these in here.  I really don't understand why people need to qualify their sympathy with negative comments.  There's plenty of other threads to dump on Schilling. This isn't one of them.

All the other BS aside; he was a huge part of the Red Sox Championship in 2004.  He's earned his spot in our hearts.  Go get 'em Schill.

I've never understood the hatred some here have for Schilling.
The negatives?
He had a taxpayer-backed company go bankrupt, but it's not like he ran off with the cash, or for that matter broke even.
He was vocal about political views that aren't in the majority in Massachusetts.
He isn't guarded with his words.
The positives?
All indications are that he's a good family man.  There are quite a few Red Sox 'heroes' who can't claim that.
He's a hard worker.  There are quite a few Red Sox heroes with instances of quitting on the team, etc.
Very active in charity.
He went out of his way to be accessible and open with fans.  There are quite a few Red Sox heroes who treated fans very poorly.
He literally sacrificed his career for the Red Sox.  There are quite a few Red Sox heroes who would have never played through minor pains, nevermind what Schilling pitched through.
He promised to end the curse and did his part to deliver.

There's also zero evidence that he'd be playing this up for a minor mole.  Firstly, he has a wife who is a cancer survivor.  Making a big deal out of a minor mole would be a bit much considering.  Secondly, I don't recall a big PR campaign when he had his heart attack (in fact, I think this is the first I read of it).  Thirdly, I can't imagine he'd be taking a leave of absence for a minor mole.

My view is that this is terrible news, especially considering what he and his family have been through already.  Between the way his playing career ended, losing his business, losing his life savings, losing his home, having a heart attack, and now this, it takes a strong man to still be standing.  We've certainly seen our share of famous athletes and celebrities go off the deep end for minor things in comparison.

I hope he makes a full recovery and that Boston sports fans treat him with the respect he's earned.

As someone who couldn't disagree more with Schilling's politics, I'd like to endorse this post. Good luck, Schill!
