Go get 'em, Curt.  Best of luck to you in this, we all know that you can take on the challenge.  It's a shame that such circumstances brought you back, but we can never express what a great thrill it was the very first time you appeared on this board, and how happy we are to see you here again.  It's a testament to your character that in this tough time, you are bringing joy to us, as much as the other way around, just as you have so many times before.

You've got this.

Beast mode in effect now Schill.  Lots of love from all here.  If you need any support or some really good laughs you know where to go.  Welcome back.  Kick ass.

Win again!

I would note that since this is on the main page, its only a matter of time before someone in the media picks up on it.  They should respect G38s wishes but depending on the media to do the honorable thing is foolish (although I am sure there are some very honorable journalists out there).

Curt,

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said in this thread, and I certainly can't say anything that has been said better than it has already.

Just know that my family's thoughts are with you and yours, and I look forward to hearing your baseball analysis on ESPN in the future.

Just wanted to add my well-wishes to the pile and let you know you're in my prayers. Cancer has affected a bunch of close family members, and their strength in making it through the treatment has always impressed me. Since you've proven time and again how much physical, mental, and emotional strength you've got, I know you'll do great with this, too. Wishing you all the best and a very speedy recovery.

Please make it through this, Curt. Your pitching was peerless, whether for Philadelphia, Arizona or Boston, and I really, really enjoy your analysis work on ESPN. See you soon.

Ditto. G38, you were instrumental in giving me what may be the single best moment of my live (and the best few weeks I could ever have hoped for). All of us will be pulling for you again.

As will I.  I look at the autographed picture you sent to me at my Navy retirement every morning as I lace up my running shoes.  We're in your corner, G38.

When you make a donation, you can make it in honor of someone fighting cancer. SoSH is usually pretty good at this, ball has officially gotten rolling in Curt's honor.

And one more thing for you new SOSH members. Let me be very clear in stating unequivocally, this website ended up being one of the final 2-3 things that convinced me to come to Boston.
It came down to the passion I was allowed to witness here, and the other?
1) I could go to NY and be a part of a team that might win #28 29 and/or 30 or..
2) I could go to Boston and be a part of something pretty much no one alive had witnessed.
#2 seemed like the right path for someone built like me...

It must be weird and wonderful to be loved and respected by so many people you've never met. But you have our love, our respect, and our gratitude forever.

As a Yankee fan, I want to belatedly thank Curt for Soriano's home run in Game 7 of the 2001 WS. Loved the interview later where Curt said he thought he lost the WS on that pitch, knowing Mo would pitch the last two innings. Very few active athletes have ever been as candid as Mr. Schilling. It goes without saying that baseball fans everywhere will be waiting for your return to ESPN later this season to tell us how the Yankees bought themselves another world title.
JFK said it best a long time ago, in a different context. We all breathe the same air, we all inhabit the same planet. Good luck, Curt, and Godspeed.

All this sharing is what makes this community so much more than a fan boy site. We have so many differing opinions and yet above all we really do care for each other. Even though most would never admit it.

Just want to add my well wishes to you Curt. At the age of 15 I was lucky enough to get tickets to the World Series in 2001. I loved every minute of watching you and Johnson beat up on the Yankees and from that point on I was hooked on baseball. I was filled with glee when you came to Boston in 2004 and still can't believe the things you were able to do for the Sox. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God bless.

Man, cancer blows. It just absolutely sucks.

Curt, as awesome as 2004 was for me personally (and it really was) and for all of us here on SoSH, I just want to say that the story I saw last year regarding you coaching your daughter's softball team - well, that's better and more important, and it's something your daughter will have forever. You're our hero for 2004 and ending lots of pain and bringing so many families who love the Sox together that year - and doing it in such amazing fashion. But you're her hero every day, I guarantee it. Fight it for her and your other kids, even when you feel like quitting because it sucks so much some days. As a daughter of two cancer survivors, I can promise you they will thank you for it.

I hope the surgery goes well tomorrow, Curt. I lost my dad to cancer, and have been trying to work against the insidious disease since.

You pitched the Red Sox to the World Series with sublaxation of your peroneal tendon, gave SoSH the best inside baseball posts I have ever seen (seriously, the stuff you wrote about your starts in the members only section before Tony M. started to quote you publicly was incredible), led the team we all love to its first Championship in a long time, ruined Shaughnessy's Curse book series, and stopped those fucking 1918 chants.

You came to the best city in the world for baseball, and also for the best city in the world for medical care. Kick cancer's ass, hermano. We are all cheering for you harder than we ever did when you were on the mound.

As a former reporter I'd say there's no way you could expect that what's said on the main board stays on the main board, given that it's visible by anyone with an intertubes connection and a google (including, if you're a reporter, your competition). P&G etc perhaps a different story. edit: or perhaps not

No kidding...where are those? I just searched the Members Only archive to no avail. Such a shame Tony M spoiled it.

Welcome back, Curt, and best wishes from my family to yours. I hope you can find some time to talk baseball with us, if you'd like.

This is what blew me away when I saw people talking about you as though they were the cool kids talking about some random b-list celebrity announcing cancer. (I mean, for one, even b-list celebrities don't deserve to get shit for having cancer, but I think most celebrities learn to deal with the fact that everyone has an opinion on them, right or wrong, part of the deal).

Your history in baseball is what it is. How and whether MLB, the Red Sox, the press, etc chooses to remember it is beyond the control of anyone here. But the plain reality is that 2004 is a story for the ages. People on this board shouldn't need a reminder, we shouldn't have to unpack the bad blood, the Game-7 Pedro collapse from 2003, the Pedro/Zimmer throwdown, the A-Rod slap, the frigid late-night Papi homers, the bloody ankle, the curse revered signs on Memorial Drive in order to remember that stuff... if nothing else, you have the most important socks in all of sports history.

I used to live in the gray old house directly across from Kingsbury Pond, and know exactly the route you took when you described the signs on 109. I lived there during an extraordinarily difficult period of my life, and I know how cold it can be in winter. I know something of cancer, and I know that it doesn't care about fame, or how nice a person you are, or whether your beliefs are right or wrong. I know that even "beating" cancer can be the kind of thing you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

I hope that your treatment is successful, and gives you plenty of time to debate the people on this board and others about baseball, politics, videogames, and anything else that anyone wants to pick a fight with a celebrity over.

Best of luck with the treatments, Curt.  Thank goodness you're in the best location in the world to be for someone who is sick with this (or any) terrible disease, considering the great hospitals and research centers in the Boston area.

And anyone who wants to help fight cancer, to help Curt and future generations, here's a link to our ongoing thread at SoSH raising money for Dana Farber Cancer Research and other important charities.

G38, if there's any way to make sure that the resected tumor undergoes genomic sequencing, it can be highly worthwhile.  There's a non-zero chance that the spectrum of mutations reveals something actionable that can directly affect the treatment you'll receive.  Not all clinicians are into this, though, so you need to self-advocate.  Not that I'm worried about that with you!

Curt - let me echo the chorus of well wishes, thoughts and prayers (without seeming maudlin, I hope).  I've admired you since you defeated the Yankees with your superb pitching and indefatigable passion in 2001.  When you joined the Sox for the 2004 season, I was beyond ecstatic.  I was at game 6 in NY, and agonized over every pitch (still don't get why they didn't bunt on you, but one of the things that went the Sox way).  You were kind enough to record a rather silly voicemail message of mine, when I won a SOSH auction, as you have always supported this community and those in need in the Boston area.  In short, I am a lifelong fan, and have absolute faith you will beat this thing.  Good luck tomorrow, and throughout . . . we are all behind you!

Very true. I have a good friend here in Florida have his 3 month old son born with a congenital heart defect followed by his 7 year old son diagnosed with a brain tumor. Both kids have had their surgeries at BCH. The care in the Boston hospitals is arguably second to none.

Welcome back Curt. Good luck and Godspeed.

Best of luck with the surgery tomorrow and the beginning of treatments thereafter.  Hopefully a year or two from now this will all be distant history and instead you'll be here chatting about going to the Hall of Fame, where you belong.

I can't add anything different to what has been said but, I can and I will add you to my prayers. I have lost both my parents and my best friend to cancer so I am down 3-0 in the playoffs so to speak. Sounds like the perfect spot to do the unthinkable and overcome the odds. Nobody comes back down 3-0 in the playoffs right? Oh yeah, that is not true anymore. It's the playoffs G38 and we know what happens when you are up in the postseason. Just do what you always do....battle like a motherf&^%$# and win! Godspeed

G38, we're pulling for you on your surgery tomorrow and subsequent treatments. I was going through a life-threatening illness during 2004 and no doubt you played a significant role in helping me get through that. I hope you feel the support of your fans here and kick cancer's ass the way we all know you can.

Curt.. Good wishes and my prayers will be with you tomorrow. I just want you to know that in 2004 I was a thirty year old Sox fan  with a rapidly deterioating liver. I was put on the Transplant List and told to wait. Part of the reason I was able to survive the next four and a half years until I got my transplant was because of you. The courage you showed in game 6 gave me the inspiration and strength to survive, If I can survive my illness, so can you! Kick cancer's ass!

Curt,

I'm sure tonight will be a long night for you and your family. Clearly you have many here, who are holding you and your family in our thoughts. Collective energy has a powerful essence. I remember feeling it as I walked up to Fenway for Game 6 this year, and I know you have felt it many times in your life. Our hope is this energy and love helps to carry you through tomorrow and the days ahead.

You are not only one of the 25, you are one of us.

Oh, and I agree with Fris. Your post game analyses offered the best baseball insights on SoSH. Screw Tony M.

Best of luck to you, Curt.  You helped bring tremendous joy to so many people in 2004 and 2007.   I've always been kind of bemused at how the same fans who despair at athletes reading from the Crash Davis script of cliches knock you for speaking your mind.  And they wonder why athletes choose the innocuous cliches.

Keep yourself in a good frame of mind and beat the disease.

I was in the middle of Maine on a bad dial up connection during Thanksgiving 2003 checking SOSH every chance I could to see if we were going to convince Schill to join the Red Sox.  I even was able to get in on one of the chats.  It was the peak of what this community was all about. Without him and Foulke (the other guy we signed) 2004 would never have happened.  Curt, thanks for the memories and beat this thing.

I’m wishing you the best, Curt.  You’re one of my favorite players.  Rarely have I ever been inspired by an athlete.  Your tenure as a Red Sox was truly inspiring from the moment you donned the uniform to your final performance in the 2007 World Series.
