By "We can't just throw guys out there" I assumed he meant that the Sox could afford to give players more slack last year when they weren't going anywhere, but this year they are in the thick of things, so a shorter leash is to be expected. In other words, I took him to be acknowledging that the team can't just pencil him in no matter what so he can work things out.

La Mancha.
Shaw has been much more effective against RHP in 2016, but much better against LHP in 2015 - neither representing particularly large sample sizes. What are his MiL splits (sorry, can't remember where to find them)? Hill seems to have only a slight split, being career OPS 0.026 better facing LHP.

That's exactly how I read it. He's acknowledging that, unlike last year, he knows the Sox can't just continue to play someone who isn't performing, i.e., himself.
On the other hand, he believes that he would improve if he were playing. That's probably been his experience.

All of that is fair if that's what he's feeling. He's human.

Probably not too bright telling it to a reporter, though.

I wouldn't doubt if he's whined himself into being traded.
Pinched between Sandoval and Moncada, I think it's pretty likely that he'd be traded, no matter what he said or didn't say. He's probably not in our 1B/DH picture going forward, and he's not as flexible as the Holt/Hernandez types, while not being a much better hitter. BUT — he's not arb eligible until 2019, so he'd be very valuable to a small market team in need of a 3B.

If I had to guess, he's starting at 3B for either the Marlins, Braves, Brewers or maybe the Reds next season.

Come on - Shaw has much more power than Holt and Hernandez. He also has more obvious weaknesses. Hernandez seems like he might become a crisp line drive hitter. Holt is a high-effort guy with some speed and incredible versatility, including a surprisingly good outfield arm.

After Shaw's Golden Sombrero today, he's dipped below .250, to .248 on the season. In the last two months, he has bat .211 (before tonight).

Right now there's no excuse to bat him against lefties. Sadly, Holt is hitting lefties even worse so there isn't a match for a platoon there.

But Travis wants more playing time.

Shouldn't that be Hill?

EDIT--not that he's anything special either

Our 2nd half 3b in 2015-2016
Sandoval wRC+63 .with a 603 OPS in 2015.

Shaw wRC+63 with a .629 OPS and a 30% k rate.
Aaron Hill - matching June/July wRC+ 58 and now with a wRC+ 33 second half with a.594 OPS.

Shaw hit like a Hall of Famer in April. Hill did in June, and they have both been basically awful since.
It was a nice story getting so much out of who was basically a fringe prospect struggling in AAA, but he should no longer be a starter.

The Moncada era cannot start soon enough.

Maybe time to give Marco a start or two. I don't know how well he handles the position defensively but he has started 6 games there this year.

Shaw could start in LF on Wednesday
“@bradfo: Farrell says Moncada to start all 3 games in San Diego. Shaw might play LF Wednesday”

The Shaw in LF thing reminds me way too much of the Youk in LF thing. At least Youk was hitting when they tried to shoehorn him in out there.

Under no circumstances should it ever be necessary to play Travis Shaw in Left Field. Maybe he wants him to get injured?

.
As terrible as Travis Shaw has been lately, he did hit .246/.310/.508 in July.

The guy has not been that bad. He had a terrible August... So did Xander. He was also clearly injured for 5 weeks earlier.
Not saying he should be getting more starts but he could be a very good bench player next season if he can step into LF in Fenway on occasion... With his obvious corner spots.
Most likely he'll be in Oakland

Travis Shaw on losing Red Sox 3B job: "They wanted a spark, [Yoan] Moncada came up, and he's played well so far since he's gotten here. I'm still, I don't want to say pleased, but I could've had a worse year. It's the spot we're in right now, down the stretch. I'm going to do whatever they ask me to do."

Saying all the right things. The situation is that Yoan is highly invested in and will get every opportunity to succeed or fail just as Travis has. So grab some wood Travis and be ready, you'll get some AB's. Make the most of them, they will be fewer and farther between.
