Former 98.5 The Sports Hub host Rich Shertenlieb announces his return to Boston radio

Rich Shertenlieb, half of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s wildly successful morning show for nearly 15 years until an acrimonious departure in November, will return to the Boston airwaves via an eponymous program on classic rock station 100.7 WZLX.

The Rich Shertenlieb Show will begin “soon,” according to an announcement the host made on social media. His arrival came the same day the station announced it will replace Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford in the morning. A statement thanked the two for “all the laughter, wild stories, and fun moments they have brought to Boston morning radio over the years. We truly appreciate them.”
Nothing significant that hasn't already been posted or well-known to those who followed T&R.

I would much rather listen to Rich than Toucher in the morning. After Fred went off the deep end the last two years, it has been unlistenable. I will actually seek this out and listen to Rich.

I won’t tune into Toucher and Hardy unless I left 98.5 overnight. Completely unlistenable with Fred turning into a complete raging douchebag. Nice to see that hasn’t changed as he is still bitching about Rich. Makes it easy to keep the dial off 98.5 In the mornings.

Looks like Brookline 911 will be back. I hope he mixes in some new bits though. He's certainly had PLENTY of time to come up with new stuff.

Well, I'm sold. Any rumors of a start date?

Assuming his contract was up 12/31, and there was probably a six-month non-compete, I'd guess the show debuts 6/3. Seems like a long lead-in with marketing beginning now...

I would assume it would coincide with the start of a new ratings period. Not sure what the calendar is for those but I know, for instance, they don’t count ratings during the holidays in December. Not sure if there’s any similar down time coming

It's been a few years since I was in the radio space, but I think April/May is the last meaningful ratings period before September/October. I imagine the show will start out of book, given the non-compete Rich had to fulfill.

If I recall correctly, his last day on air was November 10… if the clock starts then on a 6-month NC, then Friday would be the expiration. Split the difference and take a guess he starts right after Memorial Day (or June 1 as someone just hypothesized).

If Brookline 911 and Fart Court are returning, I hope he spreads them out… once a month would be fine for those. Same for Armpits of America. I also loved the Finebaum bit, but since ZLX isn’t a sports network I think that’s gone bye bye. RIP “Hey Paul”.

Man I'm not sure how Rich and Rich alone could do Brookline 911. Half the fun in them was Fred's interjecting about how terrible these people were.

That’s true. I’ve seemingly been tougher on Toucher than most here, but the single funniest thing I ever heard from them was Fred telling Paul’s audience to ‘fall back on their education…those magic four years on the Tuscaloosa campus…’.

I about fing died.

That’s the problem. Rich turns into Jimmy Fallon laughing all over the place, waving his arms in the air and it’s not good. Fred was the best part of it.

Hopefully that’s what the co-hosts are for. Rich is a master table-setter; let’s hope he has some co-hosts/second voices that can provide the color commentary in a funny way.

Bingo. I’ve said here before that Rich and Ryan Johnston was a very good tandem. RJ was able to reign in Rich’s most over the top tendencies. If he can find a similarly capable #2 he’ll be good.

If Rich is smart, he completely ignores Fred and doesn't even mention anything about him or their old show. Move forward. Let Fred be the grump who won't let it go.
If Rich is smart he would have Fred's ex-wife sit in studio for one day a week

I am kind of surprised he would go back in the 6am slot that seems like personal life hell and he probably could have gotten drive time somewhere

ZLX is in the Pru now right? It's a pretty nice little commute if he still lives on Boylston
iHeartMedia stations (e.g. Kiss, WBZ) have studios in Medford near Wellington Station, though some have their transmitters on top of the Pru.

Not to infer anything ;), but a) that’s not a ZLX type track, so I wonder how much leeway he’ll have on the music programming (hopefully a lot) and b) leaning into sports energy in that promo makes me wonder if they’ll dip into sports a bit. Maybe just the Celtics?

Honestly, a show with a decent cast that spent time discussing pop culture, funny bits, some local sports and some off-the-wall music would be kind of rad. I doubt he can shape it exactly like that, but there’s some promising potential in that tweet. (Or he just edited the promo himself and did what he wanted, and it won’t actually reflect the nature of the show.)

Ooof, not sure about this direction. Are any of these co-hosts capable of being entertaining in non-sports conversations? And can they keep Rich on the rails during his more frenetic moments?

Ted Johnson on a daily basis will be terrible. He's good for about a half hr on Monday's during football season. Him daily during the off season? Yikes.

Also it seems like he's focusing mainly on football, which....I guess certainly is a decision.

I'm rooting for this show, but man I'm disappointed by this announcement and implication that it'll be heavily sports focused. Toucher and Rich (the individuals as well as the show) was at its best when they weren't sports guys.

Exactly. I like all of them well enough as guests or guest hosts. However, who’s going to be riffing during Brookline 911 type stuff? That’s where you need a voice like Fred.

I don’t care how much they hate each other, it’s lame we lost the best morning show for these two new shows that seem like a bunch of meh.

I assume this show is 6-10 since everything else indicates a direct competiton with T&H, but why so silent on show times?

Giardi is ok.

Wilder I remember being alright in some appearances on T&R, she's a different voice/demo, and brings something new to the table. Rich I'm sure will get weird but we'll see. I'll reserve judgment there.

Hurley is an awful hot take machine.

Johnson is hot garbage almost 100% of the time.

Rich had better have some good stuff built up over the last few months to roll out.

You’re kinder than me. I think Ted Johnson is terrible. Just a bitter, unfunny meathead.

I agree that Hurley and Giardia are fine as guests. How they do for 4 hours is TBD. And I don’t know Wilder at all.

Regardless this sure looks to be a Pats-centric sports show, which ain’t what I was hoping for at all. Like you said, we may have gone from having one all-time great show to having two C+’s at best. Guess we’ll see.

Hurley has the most "cutesy sarcastic" Twitter feed imaginable. i unfollowed it. He's ok on the air though.
