Wouldn't this be the time to start retooling the core of the roster?
Rask and Krejci recently signed new, expensive contracts. Lucic is next due to cash in. At some point you are paying too much for past performance. If the Bruins keep giving the core of the previous cup winner/cup finalist big contracts for declining performance we will end up in salary cap purgatory.
So maybe now is the time to cash in a Marchand or Lucic or Loui for a younger, cheaper piece for the next championship core. It'll be a painful, but right, decision.

Edit: grammar

Marchand and Lucic can reasonably considered to be "in their prime" for another 4-6 years.  They are both only 26 years old.

I understand. But my point is that if you ride all these guys, Marchand, Lucic, etc right through their prime and into their decline you risk a very expensive, inflexible roster
The Bruins seem to prioritize C, D, G in roster construction and have paid accordingly for those positions. However, youcan't do that and still pay top dollar to all of your top 4 or 5 wingers. Eventually the budget gets tight, like this year. And that's not a criticism. I admired Chiarelli's balls for signing Iginla and going for it last year.
So if the opportunity presents itself to get younger and/or cheaper it needs to be considered.
There hasn't been much roster churn at the top in the last 4 or 5 years. This success, led to those core players becoming expensive. Maybe it's time to use some of them to retool the roster

4-6 years from now the Bruins have only 20M in contracts on the roster. There are good reasons to trade Lucic or Marchand but cap space in 4-6 years isn't one of them.

FWIW, Rob Dimao(!) was at the Providence game last night according to Divver of the ProJo. Apparently Dimao is the director of pro scouting for St. Louis, so that has fanned some of the flames on a potential Boston/St. Louis deal. I still don't see much of a fit, particularly for St. Louis, but there seems to be a decent amount of smoke around here.

Also, it seems like Chris Stewart will be dealt momentarily. Healthy scratch this week and he seems to already have a foot out the door. I don't have too much interest in him though, but the B's have been linked to him all season.
