Sixers fans boo team at end of 2nd Quarter.

The Sixers were only down 14 at the half(which is nothing in the NBA) and got booed going to the locker room at halftime?? CRAZY! The hottest team in the league with 17 straight wins and probably one of the top teams in the league right now and that's how they are treated??? They have been known for booing their own but this one surprises me even for them. They are truly a miserable group. They don't deserve this team.

Sigh.

The team was outscored 34-13 in the 2nd quarter. They scored 3 points in the first 6:00 of the 2nd quarter. It was a terrible quarter. Shit, there was a half court set where Simmons was trying to attack the basket and Redick ran into him. In a playoff game! They were awful.

Do you think that Brett Brown, Ben Simmons, or anyone else went into the locker room and said and said, "Gee, we got the brakes beaten off us in that quarter but it's ok, we won 17 in a row!!!" Did the team deserve a standing ovation after laying a massive egg in that quarter? C'mon. The fans were obviously frustrated with the effort and they let the players know about it. And guess what? It was OVER after that.

In the 2nd half, the crowd was again fantastic. They were engaged, loud, and rooting the team on from the start. Did you watch the last quarter of the game? It was absolutely electric in Wells Fargo. When they cut it to 2 with 4:00 left, it was the loudest I have ever heard the Center. They were trying to will this team to victory, and were doing that for the bulk of the 2nd half. I was there for game 1 and 2, and the crowd was super supportive and behind this team, save for that one minute last night. I didn't boo last night, but I was frustrated with the effort as well.

I get that Philly is a winter sports natural rival for Boston, and it's fun/chic to shit all over Philly fans, but this "incident" is an absolute non issue.

I agree with your overall point that this is not a big deal at all (fans booed a team not playing well?? No shit), but this was reported on by ESPN not the Boston Globe.

Ahh, I wasn't aware that ESPN decided to report it. I thought it was someone who watched the game and then made a thread to dump on Philly fans. My bad.

One more side note, part of the frustration last night was directed at the refs. It looked like Miami was getting away with a lot of grabbing and contact that was going uncalled. Pair that with some decidedly poor play by the home team and booing will almost always be the result.

I mean...it worked? The Sixers came out well to start the 2nd half.

Maybe more fanbases should try the pre-emptive boo before things get out of hand--it's the new timeout to stop a run!

Yes it was a bad first half, but this team who has been so good didn't deserve it. That was my point. And down 14 is nothing, they knew they could and would come back.

Just curious, are you a Celtic fan that is a transplant in Philly area like me? Originally from N. E.?

Sounds like rantings of a shitty sports fan. That said since when has Philly been a rival to Boston?

Back in the early to mid 80's the Sixers-Celtic rivalry was huge. Bigger then the Lakers in many ways because they went 15 years without playing each other in the finals. After Bird and Dr. J left it kind of faded. Some Philly fans try to say Flyers-Bruins is a rivalry but I don't see that at all.

Hey, that's one way to look at what I wrote. People got upset about a poor performance, but nobody quit on the team. To single out one minute of booing among a couple hours of undying support, and then to make that the basis to call a fanbase "miserable" and state "they don't deserve that team" is shortsighted and unfair. If you take it as a "rant" so be it.

The Sixers and Celtics play in the same division. They've had plenty of battles in the past and should have plenty in the near future. Flyers-Bruins? I just remember the vitriol towards the Flyers during the 2010 playoffs that made me think there was a spark to that match up as well. I'm also not a hockey guy so I could be off base.

Philly/NY has always been a bigger rivalry.

Eagles/Giants
Mets/Phillies
Flyers/Rangers

The Boston/Philly rivalry is pretty nonexistent outside of the NBA in the early to mid 80s due to conference affiliations. Perhaps with both hoops teams set to peak in the next 3-5 years, that could return a little bit.

Boston-Philly is coming back in hoops. And don't forget it was the major NBA rivalry during most of the 1960s.
Philly is experiencing a sports revival with the Eagles and Villanova so far in 2018. Flyers are young and improving. Same could be said for the Phillies.
76ers are probably second behind the Eagles in terms of passion among the fan base. 76ers fans just spent five years watching The Process slowly unfold. They can be excused for their impatience. Can you imagine buying tickets when the ownership is tanking every season? The Celtics never did that, unless you count hiring Rick Pitino as tanking.
I have always considered Philly and Boston pretty similar, not only in historical terms, but as sports towns. New York sits in between but the real passion rests with Boston and Philly.

Bullshit. HOLY SHIT IS THIS BULLSHIT.

You don't chant "Beat LA" when your bigger rival just beat you. Seriously the biggest moment of 76ers/Celtics "rivalry" is us asking them to beat another team. You might as well go ask Michael Cohen for legal advice.

I agree with this but rivalries are forged through direct conflict and typically are heightened when both teams are good and one stands in the way of the other’s path to a title. The Eagles and Pats have split 2 SB’s over past 13 years but there really isn’t any lingering feud there. I can’t really think of a single memorable Sox/Phillies moment during interleague play although I’m sure some here could. Bruins and Flyers had some battles in the 1970s and most recently in 2010/2011 but there isn’t much there.

That leaves Celtics/Sixers. I think there is real potential here. Both teams are young, talented and seem destined to clash for years to come and maybe as soon as a couple weeks. Adding in the Tatum/Fultz trade, which links the 2 teams even more, and you have some real potential here. Between Embiid, Simmons, Fultz, Saric, Kyrie, Al, Tatum, Brown, Hayward, and whatever the next 2 drafts bring, you have some serious talent on both sides. And that’s what makes the great rivalries.

Agree with your assessment. Hope the 76ers survive the Heat. I am glad they will be tested right away because this team has so much to prove and so little recent success to lean on. The streak was great but mostly built upon the dead carcasses of bad teams.
I have lived 35 years in Pa. and 35 years in RI. The fans do not seem much different to me. Both regions get a bad rap nationally based on stereotypes that go back to the 1960s. Travel the country and you will not find two more passionate two regions for all sports than New England and the Tri-State region around Philly.

My point was the Lakers and Celtics didn't meet in the finals from 1970-1983. A lot of younger people weren't aware of it as much. The Sixers met in the playoffs in 77, 80, 81 82 and 85. Plus in a fall edition of the Sporting News in 1982 Dick Weiss called Celtics-Sixers the no.1 rivalry in sports. One ahead of Redskins-Cowboys. I'm not making that up. Go look it up in the archives.

Sorry, I'm rooting for the Heat because they would be easier to beat. I don't want the tougher team?

I feel the Celtics-Sixers was a bigger rivalry than the Celtics-Lakers. It was forged in the 60's and came back a little in the 70's and those regular season games in the early 80's were incredibly intense. Celtics-Lakers were sort of a novelty made-for-TV thing, and of course the Lakers didn't beat the Celtics, ever, until 1985. The Sixers beat the Celtics in 67, 77, 80, 82. Yes I was among the 50% or so who chanted "Beat LA" but that's because the whole league seemed tilted for the Knicks and the Lakers. I'd still root for the Sixers over those two fraudulent franchises. I'm not sure rivalry necessarily always means you'd never root for them. I mean I'd never root for the Yankees, sure, but that's another level. I did root for the Flyers against the Soviets but the Flyers have to be about seventh on the list of Bruins rivals.

As for the booing, it's typical. Have the Patriots never been booed in the last 18 years?

I do hate the Sixers. It goes back to the Lloyd Free days and the intense Cs-Sixers battles in the early Bird era. And I think the Philadelphia accent is literally the worst one in the United States. By far. Philly fans annoy me, and that I live on a block in northern NJ with 6 homes filled with passionate Philly fans is one of the reasons. But there is no way in the world that the Celts-Sixers comes anywhere near the Celts-Lakers. Even based on the 80s alone, the latter kicks the former's ass, and layering in all of the battles of the 60s makes it a slam dunk, no pun intended.

Even with my level of disdain for Philly sports, I think drawing conclusions based on some random booing during an NBA playoff game is weird science. Let we forget, Pats fans have showered scattered or not so scattered boos on their team at half time of the precious few lackluster performances we've had to "endure" over the Brady years. I've had the absolute screaming pleasure of being at the Prior Toilet when MFYFs booed Saint Derek Jeter and Saint Mariano Rivera. (I of course joined in as loudly as I could to do my part in raising the volume level, but I digress.) This year, Jeter's Gift was booed on opening day and then again soon after that. The point is that all fans boo their own teams and players at times. Make no mistake, I think it's self-defeating and a very bad idea. But if this is a litmus test on fandom, then the fans in NY, Boston and Philly all suck, and I am sure they also suck in just about every other passionate sports town.

I live in Philly area and the accent can be annoying. Especially the words Coke,.CooooooHHHHHke and on awwwwn. But as native of mass who I am I to insult another accent, lol. The worst to me is the Brooklyn/Lawn Giland accent. Ugggh! I'm not saying Sixers-Celtics is bigger now then Celtics-Lakers, I'm just saying in the early to mid 80's it was bigger because the Celts and Lakers hadn't met in the playoffs for so long.

This is a horrible thread.
Literally no one I read even mentioned the booing, and I didn't notice it. Every single broadcast quarter has mentioned the fantastic atmosphere

ESPN is toxic shit, that sticks on narratives regardless of truth, as fucking Boston people should damn well know via the Patriots coverage.

You are the reason they print this shite, you click and react with your confirmation bias.

People wanting to bitch about accents from Boston shouldn't throw stones btw

The fans don't deserve the team?
Do you deserve the red Sox, the Patriots and the Celtics and the bruins with that attitude?
Ugh

Edit
There is nothing about it that I see with a search on ESPN, so they must have taken it down. No mention in the write up.
Oh but with a search the 3rd piece is about booing santa, 40 years ago. So that seems cool.

This smacks of confirmation bias

I look forward to replying to every Patriot thread with a comment about scumbag cheaters for 60 years and that being seen as a constructive discussion starter

Philly has one of the worst fan bases in sports. Hardly a surprise.
Yeah this isn’t breaking news. They didn’t throw batteries, so maybe they’re evolving as a species.

Because we need more antagonism for no reason.
There's no link, there's nothing available via search.

It's trolling at best
I swear on my parents grave I did see it. And if you read it I did cut up the Boston accent. No way I troll.

I just rewatched the end of the 2nd, there is some booing of Wade as he runs some clock, but there is no meaningful booing to be heard.

This is in fact not true.

The fact many of you jumped on it assuming it to be true because it fits your preconceptions .... There's a term for it.

Fair enough. Note the part of the response where I said I didn’t boo because I didn’t think it was a good idea either. But if that’s the way people want to vent frustration so be it. Maybe you guys can come and educate the masses in Delco or South Jersey and teach them how to be a proper fan.
