Fwiw all hedge funds have investment committees and a collaborative approach in theory but someone has final say and how much of a committee it is depends entirely on the leader.

If Brett Brown has final say but there is a good GM crew to do the work it's a better set up than many coach gm roles.

I still hate it and I hate the lack of interviews but I think they want a no brainer name. This is they want theo for the Cubs type deal. That's dumb but I am pro not hiring a guy who is worse than the current brain trust lol.

Three candidates being interviewed (at least so far):
The Philadelphia 76ers have been granted permission to interview three front-office executives -- Golden State's Larry Harris, Houston's Gersson Rosas and Utah's Justin Zanik -- for the franchise's vacant general manager job, league sources told ESPN.

Sixers ownership is planning to start meeting with candidates next week, league sources said.

Fucking absolutely ridiculous.

I like EB, and he's by all accounts a great guy and tremendously respected by other players.

However, GM is a hard job and he's had a year and change of ANY front office experience.

He may work out, but it's a bad lazy hire

Meet with the best candidates, learn from the interviews and see if someone blows you away. Just because you like your staff doesn't mean you limit your INTERVIEWS to people who might be willing to accept existing staff.

Sigh. Sixers ownership suck so much. Celtics fans have no idea how lucky they are.

Oh, we know. Ownership quality is the prime-mover force behind all of our 21st-century championships, possibly excepting 2010 Bruins. Kraft, Henry and Wyc are basically everything you could possibly ask for as a fan (unless you're a fan of the Revolution...). We saw what happened when you took Bill fucking Belichick and gave him a shitty ownership situation, or when the Yawkey Trust essentially said "Jesus, take the wheel!" when it came to oversight of management. We've read King Lear.

Then again, the ownership of the Boston Celtics changed hands 10 times between 1964 and 1979, and even in more-modern times, was up for sale in 1983, 1993 and 2002. These things can turn over if people make bad decisions often enough; not even having a seat on a financial rocket ship like the NBA necessarily keeps an owner from liquidating.

ownership+front office mgmt+coaching. Celtics hit the trifecta. It's a powerful cocktail for all sports franchises. If it's not right you need some insane amount of field/court talent to overcome it.

The league office probably dictated to the Sixers that they needed to name a GM before the season started. Brand looks like someone the owners can send into the locker room to communicate with the players and handle the media. Which was damaged by BC last season. It's not the ideal selection but makes some sense from the ownership perspective.

Sixers will need Markelle to show up big time and health from Ben/Joel to compete for ECC. Even then it feels like the Celtic/Sixer gap has increased this offseason after the BC fiasco and whiff in free agency.

Well if they couldn't get Morey, Brand is kind of the next, best thing, right?

Evidently along with Brand, PHI promoted Alex Rucker, who is described by one article as "a former Raptors analytics genius," to executive VP of basketball operations. Two internal candidates for the job - Ned Cohen, who some consider a rising star, remains the assistant general manager, and Marc Eversley, remains senior VP resident of player personnel.

I suppose this means that Brett Brown will have a tremendous say in FO moves.

That seems likely re BB yeah.
And I don't hate that as BB has shown himself to be longer term looking than some coaches, and most notably the trade back in the draft was a very non coach/ win now move.

Of course now watch the hear land butler because of their horseshoe up their ass.

I just don't get what the Colangelo employees did that was so great. What good move did they make? Why do you HAVE to keep them.

Now saying Brett is our guy and he has to stay is a handcuff, but not a deal breaker to most you'd think. But you have to keep all the staff? F off for anyone serious.

I hope it works out, I like brand and think he wanted this long term and I wouldn't have bet against him being a GM in some time. But man.

Re the summer I think the sixers improved modestly, they were hugely lacking a two way wing with some experience. Chandler helps. I think Muscala is a good stretch 5 to play with embiid benched lineups but they are still shallow at wing. Zhaire injury hurts and I am excited about Korkmaz longer term but he's not defensively ready physically.

But the big deal for the sixers is that this is their big two stars first healthy offseason and saric development and of course what happens with Fultz. It's really about internal development and next year they have another shot to add something big or if not real depth.
But sure they are behind looking up

I was a little disappointed at our offseason. I wasn't expecting LeBron or anything but I though Leonard was certainly a possibility. I'm not really into college ball so I'm whatever on Zhaire but am still hopefull. I really think Fultz and Simmons' shooting is the key to how far we go in the playoffs barring any huge trade or injury.

"We"? I will assume from your forum-name that you mean the Sixers. Also, would you please expand on your point about the Sixers acquiring Leonard? Sure, most everyone wanted to get him on their team, but perhaps you can provide us with your thoughts on what they could of done. Or, perhaps what prevented them from acquiring Leonard?

Final request, maybe also explain what it is about shooting by Simmons and Fultz (their problems seem to be very, very different in origins, though the consequences may be similar) that you think might change/improve and why?

Thanks.

I thought the Sixers might land Leonard with some sort of combination of Covington/Saric/Fultz/Miami #1 (not saying all of those pieces). But who knows what, if anything, PHILA offered (for a player who indicated he was going to go to LA next year) and who knows if SAS wasn't just looking for a single player they preferred?

There's a similar dynamic for Butler I suppose. The Sixers could make that trade but if he's really planning to play for one of those trio of dislikable teams next year I wouldn't give much. They are set up well enough for the future that there's no point in them sacrificing real long-term pieces to go all-in this year. Also, if I WERE trading real long-term assets in the hope that I could sway one of those guys to stay, talent-wise I would have been more inclined to gamble on Leonard than Butler.

The reports have been that the Spurs wanted Simmons or embiid to discuss Kawhi
Which was obviously a non starter.
I think (personally) I would have been interested in Covington saric Miami 2021 base if I were the Spurs. But they seem to have wanted a "star" back.

Kawhi is a perfect fit, if it doesn't work out in Toronto they can still offer him the max (same for KD and butler too of course) in the off-season.

I basically agree with you. Next offseason the team will have more idea what Fultz is or isn't too. A core of good Fultz, Simmons, embiid, saric, Covington plus potential from zhaire and Korkmaz means you still need a wing, but only a secondary creator type.
If Fultz bombs then you must have a second creator ball handler

Lloyds needs to develop a specific insurance policy for Sixers' first round draft picks. It's like the Madden Curse, except performed by a voodoo priest.

Probably doesn't mean much but Fultz started tonight's exhibition game and Reddick came off the bench. Sixth man?

Landry Shamet, taken 26th in the first round by Philly, looks like a better shooting guard candidate than Fultz. 6-foot-4, 185, good shooting form. Made 3 of 7 threes last night against Dallas. Shamet played at Wichita State for three years. Shot 44 percent from beyond the arc. Great shooting form. Seven-foot wingspan.
Wilson Chandler's hamstring injury opened the door for preseason minutes and Shamet is turning some heads. But Fultz will get all the attention because the organization drafted him No. 1 overall.

Another triple double for Ben Simmons, 11 points, 10 assists...and... 11 turnovers.

Is it too soon to bury the sixers? They’re making the playoffs but they really don’t look like an elite team. They should’ve gotten Kawhi.

As much as I'd like to shovel some dirt on them its too soon. They just need some shooting to replace Belinelli and Ilyasova. Covington, Redick and lightly playing Muscala are their only 3pt threats at the moment. Shamet should develop in time. Saric has been shooting poorly this year and will turn it around.
Embiid is a terrible option from the perimeter, not only does he shoot poorly but you lose his ability to board when he hoists 3s.

They need to start Redick w/Covington, Simmons, Embiid and Simmons to open up the lane. And add a shooter to their bench.

Korver is on the market and may solve some of their issues.

Philly was trending 44 wins prior to acquiring Ilyasova and Belinelli last year, went on a huge winning streak against an easier schedule at that time of year. They lost both players, are forcing playing time on Fultz who shares a backcourt with another non-perimeter shooter and Saric has again started slow after playing with his national team all summer.

The Sixers appear to be underachieving......I'm not sure that this is who they are until they fix their secondary personnel issues. It's an awful roster balance as it stands right now.

So far, the experiment is not going well. While last year's starting five (Embiid, Simmons, Dario Saric, Robert Covington, J.J. Redick) has a net-rating of 17.5, replacing Redick with Fultz has resulted in a lineup with a net-rating of -36.5 through six games. When he shares the floor with Simmons in any lineup, their net-rating is -17.6. With Dario Saric, another player who needs space to thrive, the number becomes -18.6.
Yikes

Brett Brown is not a dumb guy. He recognizes that this is an 82-game preseason to the end of year tournament and is viewing this as such. Fultz is such a terrible fit with Simmons/Embiid that he is starting him for the purpose of establishing value as prior to this season he had none or somehow catching lightning in a bottle. I'd be surprised if Fultz is here past the deadline if he is even moderately successful otherwise he'll be where he was in the playoffs last year as the team shifts its focus and better structures its lineups.

Agreed, they should move him. Some players just don't develop/thrive under the glare of a big market (Carl Crawford, hello).

Phila front office/BB can pin this terrible pick on Colangelo. OR blame market sentiment, "gosh EVERYONE had him as consensus #1" (except of course Danny Ainge). The sooner they move him the better for Markelle and the 76ers.

If Markelle continues to bumble along and posts huge negative numbers with the starting lineup, I wonder what a tanker like the Hawks/Bulls/Cavs would offer for him?

Cavs could offer Korver + a protected #1 and that might be the best deal at this point

Philly playing their best lineup is a playoff team that probably loses in the second round. With Fultz they are worse, but their best chance to rise to true contender status is to get Fultz right. They need to give him games to see if he's irreparably broken.

Also Ben Simmons needs to take 3s, the Fultz problem would be much less extreme if Simmons wasn't playing like it was 1943

Ben has been very on and off to start the season, it's also clear the two non shooter lineups suck. Simmons or Fultz or TJ has been fine two of the above... Not so much.

Their spacing has been missing Muscala who is just recently healthy, saric is playing like shit and Chandler is out

They have been a big step below the big teams but there are some signs of improvement from Fultz and saric being this brutal is hopefully a temporary thing.

As for the should have got Kawhi, for who Simmons? They demanded been or Joel. I think if the raptors don't win the east they'll have another shot this offseason.
Durant, Klay, Middleton and Kawhi are three excellent targets for them.

But yeah they haven't clicked at all yet

As for last year, and the additions etc it was a lot more to do with the schedule. The hardest in the league in the first half and the easiest at the end.
Saying they were on 44 win pace is ignoring schedule. They underperformed their pythag etc it's a lazy flawed argument

Simmons isn't even comfortable taking 15 footers right now. He's only attempted 4 shots outside of 15 feet all season. It'll be a multi-year process to get him to take 3 pointers, which is why I think Fultz needs to eventually be dealt. He and Simmons just can't co-exist. I'd offer him up to Phoenix for Mikal Bridges but doubt the Suns would bite.

I think this is why Brown is starting Fultz to drive up some value in him around the league. Forget Bridges.....I don't feel any GM would offer anything more than a 2nd rounder at this point as he's a complete flier now that his warts have shown.

Fultz only shooting a bit better than last season on 2 pointers: .414 this year and .409 last year. His eFG% is up slightly because he's hit a few threes (30.8%).

But he's actually shooting less often per 36 minutes than last year, and drawing fewer fouls.

Just some random numbers with no commentary for fun.

Simmons average shot last year was 5.5 feet. This year it is 4.9 feet.
Fultz average shot last year was 6.2 feet. This year it is 11.2 feet.

For reference, Tatum was at 12.7 feet last year and 15.8 feet this year. Jaylen 12.4 and 13.6.

Over 50% of Fultz's shots are from 10' out. 14% for Simmons.
