Great trade. This smooths out rotation depth for the stretch run. Yanks have enough arms and outfielders to make this deal.

Huh, I need to think about that. Happy that Florial is still here anyway...

Wow that is a Monster return for Oakland. Obviously there is a lot of risk involved, but two guys who were legit top 50 guys at the start of the season. A ton to give up for a #3 guy

I guess as someone who has owned Mateo for years in an AL keeper, I guess I should be happy Mateo moved to the AL.

Frazier, Hicks and Judge are the outfield for at least the next 3 years anyway. They still have Florial when (Hicks?) moves on

Solid starter, under control for 2 1/2 years and we still have Torres and Frazier

Fowler may never play again, and even if he does, there's a significant chance his ceiling has been lowered by that injury. Kap has yet to be able to pull off a remotely healthy season.

Yeah, the ceilings moving are high, but there's a pretty good chance the only useful piece headed to Oakland is Mateo.

That’s something that can be done?! How much can a team bankroll towards the International pool this way? Sounds like something that should be looked at.
They also got $1.5 bonus poll money in the deal for Gray.

Essentially that is the equivalent of the first round pick. Yankees are being sneaky, I like that.

Kaprielian and Fowler are question marks to an extent because of their injuries, Kaprielian should come back but people have questioned his delivery and the repeatability of it. I loved Fowler as you all know but it's possible he will never be quite the same after that injury. And Mateo looked like a flop a month or so ago and has gone back to slumping the past week or so. All in all, I think a pretty great deal for Cashman.

Makes good sense to me. I do think Kaprielian will eventually break through and succeed.

Yanquis still need a number one to win big in post-season.
Not sure if that's true (in general, I mean, for any team) but Severino has been pretty damn good so far this season. It certainly helps to have a dominant ace in the postseason but it's not a necessity, especially if you win the division and don't need to play the inane play-in game.

We needed Gray badly. Too many good hitting Yankees teams went nowhere in the playoffs due to guys like the 2005 team with Chacon,Small. Don't even get me started on the Late 80s team with past their prime John, Guidry and Rhoden.

Who knows, maybe this kid turns out to be Al Leiter, but the Yankees are swinging on all cylinders now.

And yeah, this means they believe in Aaron Hicks' first half this season, Fowler and Mateo both gone and Florial a few years away.

I love that Cashman managed to keep all of his healthy top pitching prospects: Adams, Acevedo, Sheffield (actually hurt now but not his arm).

Of course Severino has been great, but woudl he hold? I don´t say he surely won´t, but he is not a proven numero uno. Gray of course helps but I don´t see him stepping up like a numero uno. It´s interesting, we shall see.

Here's a thread with some quotes from an executive who had knowledge of the trade talks with #Yankees and Sonny Gray.

"You want to know who blinked first? The A's. All things considered, this trade is a win for the #Yankees."

"Beane was dead set on Florial or Frazier. #Yankees were insistent on keeping both. When #Yankees brought up Fowler, wheels were in motion."

"Mateo was always a part of the deal. #Yankees have been interested in trading him for 2 seasons. Can be special but no spot on the team."

"I love Fowler. His upside is through the roof. But his game is so reliant on speed and #Yankees aren't sure he'll get all of it back."

On the flip side, there has arguably never been a bullpen this deep 1-6, but we're a long way from any of that still.

"Kaprielian can be very very good. I see him as a 3-4 starter w/ 2 potential. But elbow issues put him behind Sheffield, Perez & others."

"#Yankees offered Chance Adams but Beane preferred Kaprielian."

A final quote #Yankees fans will like. "This move puts them ahead of Houston. I love what the Yankees did and who they were able to keep."

I've warmed up to the trade reading some of the justifications but I still haven't warmed up to Gray, who has a lot to prove outside of his home ballpark and in a division race.

He is a Yankee in name only at this point, he's already not playing and that is with Hicks out.
Yeah I know. But I like to point out that mistake whenever possible, especially to my buddy who went on and on about how much smarter it was than resigning Cano.

I like what Cashman has done. A lot. But this is just nuts. Federico is off his rocker if he thinks they closed the gap.

I pretty much agree, but I'm also not sure where the HOU pitching staff stands, and I know that McCullers seems to have hit a wall.

Yeah, that was pretty clearly wrong from day 1, although I'm glad they don't have the rest of that Cano deal either.

Holding onto Florial and Acevedo is huge for the Yankees. If I were a fan of theirs, I'd be extremely happy with the happenings of the last 370 days or so. Good asset use in both directions.

Is this how over-valuing prospects looks from the other side, because as a Sox fan I found this trade infuriating.
I suppose if you don't like Gray than all of this is a moot point, but that's the type of package the Sox have been giving up for rentals or middle relievers, or a highly desired SP who still had his arbitration years left. And when the Sox got Pomeranz they had to give up Espinoza.
Unless I'm missing something, none of those guys are even ranked in BA's revised Top 100. As an outsider my intotial esaction is that the A's got fleeced. And if that is a bit hyperbolic, at the very least, I don't think there's any way you can say it's a trade the A's won.

This was a steal for the Yankees. Mateo is a head case with no role in the organization. If he won't hustle to GET to the majors, how hard will he play before crowds of 10,000 in the mausoleum?

Damn, props to Cashman for these last two deadlines. Absolutely fantastic trades up and down. Dude is good. The Yankees have to be the AL East favorite now and the NYY of 2018-2022 are going to be a monster. Yikes.

Fowler is in there even with his injury, Mateo and Kaprielian were both in there coming into the season and Mateo should have still been on this recent list with his crazy recent surge in AA. There is a ton of collective upside with these three, it's not an accident that no other team managed to bid this high for Gray.

Edit: Oops, I was talking about the recent mlb.com list, sorry. Not sure about the BA list, but all of these guys are definite top 100 guys when healthy (a big 'when' admittedly).

About where I'm at. Price seems fair. Or at least I don't think Cashman was bidding against himself. I just hope Gray can stay healthy.

Cashman has done a great job this deadline with 2 starters, 2 bullpen arms and a bat and has addressed all his pressing needs.

I'd be more worried about what his home splits start looking like in Yankee Stadium as opposed to Oakland Coliseum than whether he can stay healthy or not. :p

Nice to see the Yankees going for it this year. I think the price was steep but fair. The sleeper is Mateo. He could steal 60-80 bases with his speed.

Eh, at least he doesn't have to worry about giving up any homers to the team closest to the Yankees in the AL East standings. :)
Fair, though I wouldn't be surprised if Aaron Judge figures out how to hit a few off of him despite the uniform change.

This was a good move for the Yanks, though. Sox are looking up at them in the division race for sure, now.

His home/away splits are pretty much dead even. As for his performance in any particular ballpark except the Coliseum, it's all small sample size at this point with him. Sonny is listed as 5'10, 190. Couple of other small-ish guys: Pedro Martinez, is listed at 5'11, Whitey Ford as 5'10. Liltle guys for pitchers.
