Also, that win felt very Mayweather esque. He neutered his opponent and chose to coast to a win. Not a smart move when you're trying to be the next guy. You have to get there first

Garcia looked good. Felt for Rojas though. He seemed screwed by the weight increase a week out. Size wise he had no chance.

Santa Cruz /Frampton was a great fight. I had it a draw. I can't see where the fuck the two other judges got their cards from. He had the leverage and the money, he should have had the fight in LA. It also looked like he hurt his right hand pretty early.

I had it for Frampton. 117 was a bit much, but 116-112 I was fine with. Cruz sacrificed power for speed. Frampton was landing much harder and pushing him around.

Yeah, for sure - it's always hard judging this kind of stuff. He and the tall amateur dude obviously can fight. Their opponents, not so much, so it might be skewing how good and effective they look.

I wonder about the viability of bare knuckle boxing, legalities aside. I'd imagine a lot of fights stop early because of hand injuries, which isn't so sexy. Also, those dudes didn't look to be in the best shape and without the gloves you're going to have quicker knockouts, so you're basically tuning in to see dudes quit or get ktfo in a minute or two. Which, to be fair, was not too different than the early Tank Abbot days of the UFC.

I'm not too impressed. I think Kimbo (RIP) would have tuned that guy up and we all know what happened to him when he fought borderline pros.

I don't know about mma gloves stopping KOs either. They mostly stop cuts and protect hands(the professional hand wrapping totally changed mma)

Tank is the first guy that started wearing mma style gloves in UFC ( I think)

I do like watching bare knuckle fights though.

Really? I saw a lot of skill there. His handspeed was very impressive (don't know his weight, but he looks pretty heavy) and he did a great job staying in the pocket and countering. He's a legit fighter.

For the ko's, I was thinking more for body shots. I don't think padding really matters too much for headshots, unless the puncher is holding up due to fear of breaking a bone, but it definitely hurts more getting caught in the ribs with a smaller glove or no glove at all.

You're probably right. I get biased quick when I look at the level of comp. I have a tough time judging skill in a vacuum. The dude he was fighting looked like he didn't know how to make a fist

True, which I noted, but I've seen plenty of amateurs spar and plenty of pros spar shit pros or shit amateurs. You can kind of get a sense of how good someone is even if the competition is crap. If a dude is throwing 95 with no batter in the box, you can still tell he's got a major league fastball.

You can. I can't. I have a tough time with that with strikers.

Looking into this guy, he probably beats Kimbo in a bare knuckle match, so I take that back. He's journeyman level as s pro so that's very legit.

I hate Jay Z's dude's stance. Looking like Holly Holm with all his weight on his front food and shoulder forward giving up his reach.

Just watched Margarito and Alvarez. I hate the illegal shit Margarito did(in the past) but I love watching the guy fight. Alvarez is tough as nails too. Was surprised to see one judge score it for Alvarez. I really enjoyed this fight, makes me want to go re-watch Margarito put a beating on Cotto for old times sake.

Why would you want to watch a felony in progress? Margarito could have ended Cotto's career and life with his cheating. Do you enjoy watching the Rodney King beating for fun as well?

I'm a bit of a skeptic on plaster of Paris actually working to injure your opponent.

Michael Conlan on the AIBA. I didn't see the fight but consensus seems to be that he was robbed. Would be interesting to get a take from a poster more knowledgeable

“The AIBA are cheats. They’re fucking cheats. It’s simple as that. That’s just me. I’ll never box for AIBA again. They’re cheating bastards. They’re paying everybody. I don’t give a fuck, I’m cursing on TV. I was here to win an Olympic gold. My dream has been shattered today. But you know what? I have a big career ahead of me. And they’re known for being cheats. They’ll always be cheats. Amateur boxing stinks. From the core right to the top.”

It's the 2nd time a Russian fighter has got a unanimous in a fight every analyst thought they lost (the other was the HW Gold Medal match) and there's a LOT of "the fix is in" comments floating around Rio apparently.

edit : just in - the AIBA has "dropped" a number of officials after "less than a handful of the decisions were not at the level expected".

Haven't watched as much as I'd like, saw a decent LHW Cuban, but Gary Russell's little bro definitely got robbed.

I have seen Shakur Stevenson and he's been impressive. I'm not sure if he'll be a great pro but he has a shot. Moves well, good iq, good defense. Reminds me a bit of Ward which would make sense given his age and who he probably watched growing up.

Watching the China-France women's match, seems like a fix was in based on the commentator.

The French women wound up winning on a split decision but is there anything more suspect in judging at the Olympics than boxing right now?

Next week is loaded.

Mora Jacobs 2
Chocolatito Cuadras (should be a great fight. Cuadras is no bum)
Soto Karass Kamegai 2
And GGG Brook.

There's potentially 2 great fights in there. Maybe 3.

I've always felt Brook was too big for middleweight but his first test being against a killer like GGG is too much to ask.

I'm hoping for a decent fight but unless GGG is dying of the flu, rumored the past couple days, I don't see Brook pulling this one out.

I am enjoying Bhop pronouncing his name KALE Brook.

That's a fucking fraud of a fight. If you're that afraid your guy is going to get hurt that you throw in the towel before a single knoock down, you never should have made the fight.

Exactly. GGG looked like complete shit. At the time of the stoppage, Brook was taunting him asking for more.

What in the fuck. Straight garbage

Twitter says the guy who threw in the towel was pointing to his eye when asked why. Wonder if they were thinking about pulling him between rounds, let him go out and didn't like what they saw in terms of his vision?

Edit- re-watching the end, looked like on a bunch of punches coming from his left he reacted like he couldn't see them at all.

He didn't even fucking look at his eye between rounds. He immediately put a towel over his head and then started whispering to him, probably that he was going to throw the towel in because the guy (corner man) is a fucking fraud.

Watching live it's hard to tell if a guy has a broken orbital bone. If he does, then it was a good stoppage

Cuadras just pushed the p4p guy as far as you can. Thought he got the shaft on the cards. Would love to see them do it again
