I would love to hear from SosH's boxing aficionados: When did the sweet science cease to be relevant? Or when did it lose the most credibility? I was really bummed out when Leonard was given the decision over Hagler, but it was a good fight. I thought GGG beat Red Elvis. Where/when did it all go wrong?

i think snoop is the biggest star to come out of tonight and someone should honestly offer him a commentary gig.

There’s no common interest. All the promoters and sanctioning bodies have made it impossible for fights to come together and then nobody trusts the credibility of decisions.

Look at it this way - if Mayweather and Pacquiao had been in the UFC, they would’ve fought a trilogy in their primes.

Did Joe Cusumano even fight tonight? He was listed on the undercard. I have his son in class. He was so excited that his dad was possibly going to fight Tyson (I think he was an alternate consideration if Jones bailed).

Wait. I admittedly wasn't consciously scoring rounds, and I had to run out and missed the last one, but that was really a draw?

Was a draw predetermined in their contract or something?

Probably. Smart not to bet.

The ring seemed pretty small tonight, too, which would’ve favored Tyson and Paul, but I don’t recall them specifying its size.

A random boxing question for you all: I've been playing "The Thrill of the Fight" (a virtual reality boxing game which is really good) a lot lately, and I'm curious about a scoring decision I got in a match I fought earlier today. In the first round, I threw and landed literally 10 times as many punches as my opponent and inflicted around 10 times as much damage. However, I also got caught by two sucker punches and was knocked down twice, having failed to knock down my opponent at all. I was rather surprised to discover after the fight that the round was scored 10-7 in my opponent's favor, and so I'm wondering whether that's how a round like that would be scored in a real-life fight: do the knockdowns take precedence over everything else? How much latitude do the judges have in a situation like this? (I was expecting the round to be scored 9-8 to my opponent, not 10-7.)

AFAIK and it can vary by state unless fighting under unified rules: 10 point must unless a penalty*. Two knockdowns is 10-7. A fighter can sometimes work back enough that a fight could get a 10-8.

* There is no 9-8 unless there is a point deduction (low blow for example).

I don't watch boxing much any more, but I just happened to have ESPN on and watched that Valdez/Berchelt fight. Really good fight and...

One of the most brutal knockouts I've ever seen. Worth going out of your way to see (unless you get squeamish).

Wow. I just watched the replay. That was frightening.

Sometimes you just got too much money. I wish Larry David would shame him for trying to leave the bald community. This looks awful.

Also, heads up, Canelo fights a nobody Saturday.

Marvin Hagler passed away at 66. Was probably neck and neck between him and Larry Bird as my favorite athletes of the 80’s. His fights were appointment viewing. From the battles with Antuofermo, to his dismantling of Allan Minter in Wembley, to the epic brawl with Hearns , to the (IMO) BS loss to Leonard. A real case can be made for him being the greatest middleweight of all time. RIP.

Same here. He was one of my top-3 sports heroes as a kid in the 80s. Hate Sugar Ray with such passion to this day. I'm a little sad tonight. Always seemed like a genuine dude too. 66 is too young to go, IMO. RIP, Marvelous.

MMH was an all-time favorite for me. Grew up watching his fights and he was my father’s favorite boxer. He was the best of his generation and even Ray Leonard knows he lost that fight.
