I had it 116-112 Lara. The 117-111 Canelo card is just ridiculous. Canelo did some nice stuff to the body in spots but it didn't really have any effect on Lara. Oh well, hopefully Cotto can destroy Canelo at MSG.

Split decision for Canelo.

117-111 for Canelo from 3rd judge. Another WTF card for a sport that I love and continue to spew shit out of its mouth and eyeballs.

I understand when it goes 1-2 rounds either way for each fighter but 117-111? Pleeeease bitch.

And BS response from Canelo. "You don't win the fight running... Lara came to run if you want to run go to the marathon".

Ummm, not when he was picking you off right off the nogging with those jabs throughout the bout. Better strategy from the Lara corner and this fight was all Lara's.

Get the fuck out Alvarez. Cotto knocks your ass out when the bout comes together. I'll be looking forward to it.

SeoulSoxFan you beat me to it. I agree pretty much 1000%. Im not as mad because who didnt see that coming? no way lara gets the win on the cards against canelo. Im actually happy 1 judge actually had him winning. Paulie's "im sorry that judge missed a great fight" line was accurate about the 117-111. Oscar should never put Canelo in the ring with someone as skilled Lara again.

The Cotto fight will be a war but I cant see Canelo beating him. He's just not skilled enough.

Side note, Juanma had the round of year last night.

Pacquiao is smart.  Even if he loses to Algieri, he won't get hurt, while Mayweather will take more mileage against Maidana.  If they ever fight, Pacquiao will be coming in a bit fresher with his recent itinerary than PBF.

I thought Lara won 7-5, but I can't be too upset about Canelo winning, though the 117-111 was absurd.  Canelo was a prodigy but he hasn't improved for shit over his last 5 fights.  He still comes straight ahead, has no defense and throws his body punches from his waist.  Someday he's going to get tooled, and it won't be pretty.

I caught the Crawford-Gamboa fight on demand; what a brawl. Check that one out.

And, yes, I'm considering going to Golovkin-Geale.

Ggg vs geale should be a decent scrap. Hopefully geale can take some of ggg power so he doesnt spend most of the fight in a shell.

The talks now are canelo vs kirkland. Even with high possibility of this being exactly like the angulo fight, I'm a little interested to finally see a big name give kirkland a shot. He's as close to must see tv as you get in boxing.

Do we know for a fact Golovkin has that kind of power?  I know his ko rate his historic, but he's just not a guy that I see hit people and put them down.  Every fight I've seen it looks like he gets in an accumulation of clean punches from various angles and eventually wears the other guy down.  Plus, I know he was supposedly sick for the fight, but he really had a hard time knocking down the dude who came up in weight to fight him, and he tagged him open a bunch.  I'm not sold on the power; I think it's more HBO marketing.  Certainly he doesn't have Stephenson/Kovalev type wood.

Ishida and Macklin were pretty good one punch knockouts.  He was hitting them pretty good before the actual punches as well, but I wouldn't say those were 'wear down' type knockouts.

I'm trying really hard not be as pessimistic about fighters as I used to be...but I have serious doubts about triple GGG. He has fought a parade of some sht opponents on hbo. I just want to see him in there with a quality guy who can make him do something other than stalk and throw bombs.

He destroyed stevens but the few times stevens let his hands go, GGG had no answer. His defense and counter punching seem suspect. But then this could be based on him fighting down to his level of opposition. Physically though he appears to have all the skills.

Eh, Macklin's stock is suspect after losing to Martinez - hometown decision aside - after what Cotto was able to do to Sergio.

Yeah, boxing is funny that way.  I have no idea if Golovkin is real or not, but when fighters win and make it look easy they haven't fought anyone, until they lose and then they were never that good anyway.

Yeah, I think this is the best fight out there, though Froch-GGG would be entertaining, too.  Froch gets hit too much, though, so if GGG really does have that legendary power, then he wouldn't last too long.

I think I'm going to AC next weekend to watch Kovalev, who's one of my favorites.  Anyone else going?

Im done watching triple g being put in with sheep. That was like his 1000th straight time on hbo and it bored me to tears. We get it, he's a beast. Time for a real fight now

The size disparity is too much imo. Same reason triple Gs people dont want him in with Andre Ward

Well that and Andre Ward is a much, much better fighter.

I'm wondering, after seeing all the empty seats at MSG, whether the top level fighters are really ducking GGG out of fear or rather out of marketing savvy?

Andre Ward has far less drawing power right now than GGG. I guess it's savvy to fight 3 times in 3 years in places like Ontario,CA.

I'm not sure whether we missed each other.

GGG is not that great a fighter.  He's not.  He'll fight a top talent and get exposed.  His only draw now is as a knockout artist, but he's not going to knockout top-level guys.  I was responding to ElUno's post about why GGG's people don't want him in with Ward.  It's not because of drawing power, it's because Ward is a top 3 p4p guy and wouldn't get touched by Golovkin.

My point about marketing savvy was why would Cotto or Froch fight a guy that can't sell out the Garden when there are more big money fights out there in a stacked division and surrounding weight classes?

Well, Cotto and GGG would certainly sellout the Garden.

Your opinions of Golovkin and Ward are somewhat difficult to reconcile with your opinion concerning for example, the Provodnikov Algieri, fight, but so be it. I think Ward has stagnated, if not regressed, and would rather coast on his reputation as a boxer than fight anyone scary. The proof will eventually be in the pudding, I suppose.

Golovkin vs. Canelo or Cotto would sell out easily, and I have to think that GGG would be favored against both right?

I have no idea whether he's a 'great fighter' or not, but why don't you think he is Marciano?  If by great you mean 'top 3 pfp in the world' that's a pretty high bar.

Cotto vs. me would sell out the Garden.

I don't see the difficult reconciliation.  Algieri is no Ward.  Not even close.  You think Ward comes out of a fight with GGG looking like Algieri or getting knocked down and beat up like him?

Dude is 32, I don't know why they're acting like he's a prospect.  This is as good as he's going to be, and he gets hit too much, doesn't have a great defense or hand speed.  He throws nice combinations and is great with angles, but I'm not sold on the power, and I don't think he has any other 'plus' ability.  Look, he might be very good, but he's fighting guys coming off a loss even and getting hit flush by them.  If Geale had any power, GGG might've gone down in the third.

After watching GGG dismantle Geale, I was pretty bummed that the fight with Chavez Jr didn't happen. That would be a great match up of GGG's power and Chavez's iron chin. It also would do a hell of a lot more to legitimize Golovkin if he was able to dispatch Chavez in the same way he has with lesser fighters. That said, I'm hoping they can make that fight with Cotto happen soon.

What odds would I make, or what would the oddsmakers put?  There'd be a lot of money on Canelo, JCCJ and Cotto from their respective ethnic bases, and also because of their bigger names.  Hell, I could see Canelo getting better odds than Ward, who I think wins 117-111.

I'd say he beats Froch who is way too open and wild and Chavez Jr; Canelo could go either way.  A motivated Cotto beats him, but I'm always weary of betting on older fighters with a lot of mileage; they can turn into pumpkins overnight.  I've made my feelings known re: Ward already.

I usually think oddsmakers are pretty accurate but you're right with a few of these they might not be.

Those sound about right to me, although I really think he'd handle Canelo pretty easily, and I don't think there's anything special about JCC.

I think he'd be an underdog against Ward certainly.

Cotto would be a great fight - the only reason I think GGG would be favored is he's (I think) much bigger.  And unless you really do it a lot, I believe you mean wary.  :)

FWIW someone else who would know (unlike me) thinks pretty much the same as you Marciano.  Thinks he has some power but that he gets hit too much and thinks against someone who can hit back or not get hit he'll lose.  He thinks Cotto would beat him, although he's also Puerto Rican.

That was a shitshow. Yes, chaves was holding but it was a grimy, inside fight. It happens. Add that to rios leading with his fn head from the opening bell and it makes the dq even worse.
Everyone has a bad night but that really sucked.

Kovalev is very basic straight up and down. And maybe 10 years ago I would say Hopkins would school him but man, he's about to be 50. Father time catches up to everyone.

I disagree on Kovalev. He's economical so I don't know that he appears on tv as impressive as he actually is. He's everything I think they're selling GGG to be. When was the last time you saw someone go down from a STRAIGHT punch to the body?

Hopkins schools busy fighters, wild fighters, fighters whose game is speed and movement. He's not going to catch Kovalev out of place because kovalev is patient and always in the right spot.

I didnt mean to discredit KO. while I will be rooting for hopkins, I favor KO to win. But I disagree on the style of fighters hopkins schools. Hes lost to slower and more methodical fighters, Dawson shut him out, and he's also lost to some wild and active guys, Calzaghe.

Just a reminder for you boxing heads, danny garcia fights tomorrow and has done his best to increase boxrec's traffic this Saturday with his high profile opponent. After the gift he got in PR, he needs to have a strong performance because he's lost some of that Mattyshe shine he had

Salka appeared to have the speed to move around Garcia but once he got clipped he went balls out and paid for it.

Peterson and Garcia will be a lot of fun. It's early August so I hope they can get it in by years end.

Him and peterson will be a war though. Itll win people back

Agreed.  I like Peterson, he'll probably never be as good as the sum of his parts, but he should have enough to beat Garcia.

Floyd looked slower and a bit disinterested the first fight, and maidana always throws punches, also it starts an hour earlier

Thats my best pitch for this rematch

Virtuoso performance.

Lost a lot respect for maidana with that bullshit interview afterwards. He got neutered and beatdown. Show some class

I hate to agree with anything "TBE" (plzzzzz) related but another completely dominating performance by the champ. To be honest, I thought the media was trying its ass off getting the hype machine going but little of that translated into the ring. The 4th was probably the worst PBF looked in the last few fights, but that's one round of what, 50?

Maidana brought little new from the first bout and ate several really hard shots. Just technically too limited in his range of moves and counters. You watch someone like him & his corner and really start to appreciate PBF Sr. and Freddie Roach in what they do.

I'll say this -- a fight with Amir Khan may be the first and only bout where I will be rooting HARD for Floyd. And for a sweet KO too.
