Now the ghost of Bob Arum is saying the contracts are all but signed.

Floyd obviously really, really loves his 0, but it's going to forever tarnish his legacy if he doesn't fight Pacquiao.  Dempsey still gets hell for not fighting Wills, and that was 100 years ago, and more the product of his managers and promoters not wanting to give a black fighter a chance than his own cowardice.

It's odd, because I really think at this point Floyd wins, but obviously he feels different.

If the explanation is that Floyd and his camp did not take kindly to Arum's recent strong words directed at Floyd, then color me stunned.

The fighter who made his entire career out of trash-talking opponents and other fighters on a level not seen before in the sport (and that speaks volumes for boxing), won't fight a guy because of some words? He's the single biggest hypocrite in the entire universe this time. No argument can now be made in his favor after this.

Manny signs the contract that he presented to him without changing one single detail, and then he finds a way to walk away still. What a total joke, and I'll say it also...a Coward.

Absolute disgraceful performance and effort by Alvarado. Completely unprofessional, got what he deserved for not taking the fight seriously

Showtime boxing prez gave an interview to the LA times today and called bullshit on Arum and his smear campaign. some key details are agreed to but the networks are still ironing things out so there is nothing to sign yet on either end. He estimates hbo and showtime are about halfway home to completing the deal.

the same way you dont believe shit that comes out of Floyd's mouth, you shouldn't believe shit that comes out of Arum's mouth.

Just give it time. Too much money on the line not to happen and both have publicly stated they want to fight each other. give it time

Well, that was short nasty and brutish.  Rios is so puzzling, sometimes he's got great hand speed, angles and combinations, others he looks so damn plodding and slow.  Of course, it's easier to look good when you've got a fleshy punching bag in front of you.  Still, credit where it's due.

The recent Boxing talk in P&G reminded me that my grandfather in law's father was a boxer from San Bernardino named Baby Sal Sorio. He's told me some stories about him and is proud of his career. I've looked online and he's mentioned on some boxing websites but I didn't find much in-depth stuff. Just curious whether any of you boxing fans have heard of or know anything about him, because his son would be absolutely tickled pink to hear that even just a few of the younger generation of boxing fans knew the name.

Have you tried boxrec? Not much detail but it does list every fight.

Martin Murray said he's willing to die today, well im willing to watch
I broke down the fight in p&g, and I'm going to watch, but I don't think Murray's will gets him past round 8 or so.

They love GGG. You should hear max on his espn radio show. The love runs deep.

I thought it was a good fight. GGG is so relentless, he never gives you time to breathe or reset but Murray gave a helluva account for himself.

GGG is definitely skilled and a beast but those gaps in his defense are there. Particularly a check hook. It's there for anyone with the power and guts to throw and land it

Yep. And the power is so damn overrated. How many clean shots did Murray shake off? He knocks people down from an accumulation of punches; his jab is his only plus punch.

Well, that was a lot more entertaining than I expected. The fight showed a lot of flaws for Golovkin, although you'd never know from the broadcast's account. I'd love to see a GGG/Cotto or GGG/Chavez Jr fight get made next. I don't think he'd be able to walk thru the punches he did yesterday against someone with more pop than Murray.

I don't know how Cotto can avoid GGG now. A fight against him at MSG has to be the biggest payday out there.
I don't have special insight, but I think the idea that top Middleweights are avoiding GGG is an HBO fiction constructed to further promote his legacy and excuse the fact that he's over 30 in terms of fights and years on this planet and hasn't fought anybody worth a damn.

Look at Cotto's resume and argue that he's avoiding GGG. Cotto more than any fighter other than Manny has fought all comers and beaten most of them.

That's good news on Chavez. I could've sworn he retired. He's still young and talented, and if he stops screwing around between fights and can start making weight and keeping his wind up, he's one of the best out there. He'd decimate GGG.

I don't think you need to look at anything other than he's the purported middleweight title holder, the clear top contender is ready to fight him at any time, and he won't make the fight. Your lack of belief in Golovkin, who he's fought, his skill, and his drawing power is well-noted. But there is absolutely no better fight for Cotto out there right now. If he declines to fight GGG, you can make all the excuses you want for him, but that's all they are.

Well, until recently, there were the Canelo and Mayweather fights out there, which were much bigger and prior to that there was the Martinez fight which Cotto took and dominated. And he's not the purported title holder. He is the undisputed linear title holder. Look up Cotto's record on boxrec - Mayweather, Pacquiao, Margarito, Judah, Mosley and Clottey - but he's ducking GGG?

Cotto is only two years older than GGG, but is a four-division champ with 32 kos in 39 wins and losses only to Manny, Floyd, a decision loss to Trout and a loss to Margarito who was fighting with loaded gloves.

If and when the fight is made, I'll let you name your stakes.

None of that concerns the question at issue. Cotto is the title holder and has a mandatory title defense against an opponent who is ready to fight him at the time he wants to fight. And that fight is also Cotto's biggest payday out there.
Now. Whether he would have been justified fighting Floyd or Canelo, or Sugar Ray Robinson is no longer relevant. The fight is there now. If he doesn't take it, he's ducking.

Your bravado about whether GGG may lose to the first name fighter he faces is really clouding the issue. Maybe you're right, maybe when Andre Ward fights for the first time in ten years, he'll take Golovkin apart. But that has nothing to do with the fact that the guy just keeps trying to make fights, and he can't get anyone to fight him. The vast HBO conspiracy you believe exists has been fallen for by every member of the boxing press, including those of them who like you believe he'll be exposed when he final,y fights a big name. He is being avloided. Martinez clearly wanted no piece of him, and if Cotto doesn't make this fight, I don't know how you can't draw the same conclusion.

Mayweather got made two days ago. GGG just won last night. This handwringing about Cotto fighting or not fighting him is premature.

My 'bravado' about GGG is directly relevant. The only reason Cotto would duck him - outside wanting to make a bigger money fight against Canelo (a Mexican to boot) or Floyd - is that he fears GGG. So, my take on GGG's abilities are at issue because Cotto and his camp are likely seeing the things I am. If GGG isn't near the fighter Pacquiao, Mayweather or Mosley are/were then the only reason Cotto would shy away from the fight is because he fears GGG's power. But, from all the fights I've seen, GGG doesn't have a punch like Martinez, like Pacquiao in the lower classes, like Marquez. He's a good volume puncher who breaks fighters down. He's also perfect for a guy like Cotto, who only has trouble against speed or range, neither of which is an issue here.

Those are my cards, what's your reason as to why Cotto would duck GGG?

What else is there? He fought a hobbled, over-the-hill Martinez (who incidentally by all rights lost to the guy GGG abused last night), and knows he can't compete with Golovkin and would rather fight a smaller guy. He will not take this fight, and he will vacate the title; I have no doubt.

But yeah, if he does make the fight, yeah, I'll put $1k on GGG against you on the midpoint of the lines.

I was planning on going to the Derby, but I think I'll leave it up in the air until I find out what the deal is with fight tickets. I'll be in Vegas next month and will talk to my casino hosts to see if there's any chance at all.

They run the Derby every year. This is the biggest fight in 30 years. Leave your hat at home, don't bother flying cross country, and watch history in person and the horsies race from the sports book.

Cotto just signed with roc nation yesteray...now i hate me some bob arum but if you read rafaels piece on all the stuff theyve done for him and his promotional company you can understand why cotto is so hated.

Roc nation, reportedly, gave him a 5 million signing so dont expect any big fight from him this year.

Boxing on NBC starts tomorrow with 2 really good fights. Weigh in is today on nbc sports.

But is Cotto interested in such a fight?

"We don't know yet," he said. "Everything I do will be the best for me. That is what I will do. If that is fighting Gennady Golovkin, I will do it. If not, he can take the middleweight title. He can take it."

From what I was reading, only a tiny number of tickets might be available to the public.  If you're in good with the MGM Grand, maybe they can allocate, but anything sold publicly will be just for show.

Broner technically made weight at 141 for a 140lb fight. #thankAlHaymon

Roy Jones won by brutal KO against some journeyman tonight. I know, i know. He should retire but it made me happy watching it

Man, these two are both morons.  I don't know who's worse, Broner's arrogance, or Molina standing there basically saying that Broner should have fought him the way he wanted him to.  Molina literally did nothing for 3/4th's of the fight.  I didn't see Molina running away from him, he just didn't throw any punches.  What a shitty poor ass loser Molina is..

I'm so used to seeing boxers come out with like a dozen other people. These WWE style entrances are a little jarring.

Thurman has a beautiful right hand and it's a great punch against a leftie. Needs to keep his front foot outside Guerrero's though.

I'd love to see him in with either. He was mentioned as a Mayweather opponent but didn't have name recognition before tonight.
