This should mean the end of Bobby Dalbec, right? I‘m no Hosmer fan and he and Pham on a roster is to me pretty gross and thinks they want us to forgive the John Lackey years, but if it means not having to watch Bobby D …

As with Pham, Hosmer is an upgrade only by default: an aging hitter with no power who's still somehow better than the in-house options. Even with San Diego paying most of his way (and presumably with a prospect coming along), there's not much to be excited about here.

Hosmer at very small money is fine; he's a competent MLB 1B. Zero upside, and I don't love it but if the cost is very small $ wise that's a chance to put a solid vet there and save money for difference-makers at say SS and 3B....

An OPS+ of 111 over the last 3 seasons is perfectly cromulent.

Hosmer's last 3 seasons: 132, 104, 112 ops+. If SD is paying almost all his salary, this is perfectly fine and a serious upgrade over what we have currently.

I just don't see the puzzle being anything that looks good even if it fits. With the Padres eating the salary... it means that there's nothing coming back with him.

We may be confused, but let's not make the mistake of thinking that our confusion = Chaim not having a plan.
But what's the plan? Replace our completely inadequate first basemen with a not really adequate first baseman who is the wrong side of 30? Woo hoo!

If the Padres are eating most of his salary, are we going to get anything else of value with him?

Better be something good stapled to him, and I’m optimistic there would be if Preller is in panic mode after the Soto deal. I’m not even sure Hosmer’s worth a league minimum roster spot.

What if Devers is traded today in some big bundle?

Everyone should let the dust settle sometime after 6 pm to see how everything shakes out before (over)reacting.

(LOL, I know I'm wasting my breath...)

He is free, under control for another few years, fills a position of need, and has a 112 OPS+. He could also likely be traded away next year if needed.

It’s hard to think of a reason this is a bad trade for the Red Sox.
Depends on the other pieces involved, but you're likely right

I mean Eric Hosmer for basically nothing beats the hell out of the Dalbec/Franchy Plan. A 1% improvement is better than no improvement.

Edit: until we find out what we gave up

A big chunk of that is his 132 mark in the shortened 2020 season and a hot start this April. Since May 1: .240/.302/.335 with five homers in nearly 300 PA.

Hosmer for three more years? What's the plan with Casas? Both are left handed and can only play first. If Hosmer is essentially free, maybe he's a stopgap that can be moved, I guess.
I will wager that Hosmer won't be the starting 1B in 2025. One way or another. And the Sox are not planning as if he will be.

I won't quibble with your "not really adequate" piece, because he's perfectly adequate---but the plan is to upgrade where we can. We just did.

1. This season isn't over.
2. Has a day gone by where someone somewhere has failed to point out the suckfest at first base this year?
3. Hosmer seems to be an improvement. He seems to be cheap enough to move later.

I'd guess the plan is:

- Let Hosmer start this year and see how he hits in Fenway
- See how Casas develops rest of year
- Not invest a ton of $ in the DH slot in offseason
- Worry about a "problem" of too many competent major league hitters when we actually have them producing in the majors at the same time

Hosmer may mean no Dom Smith, though...or at least less likely

I'd like to see his hit chart overlaid onto Fenway. He might be able to hit for a bit more power in the friendly confines versus Petco or whatever it's called nowadays.

There's a plan, right?............. Right?
There isn't. It's just the worst of Dan Duquette, throwing as many random washed up and/or injury prone players you can find against the wall and hoping you can piece together a season. Last year it worked, this year it isn't but he refuses to give up the ghost of the 2022 season.

Hosmer is a weak defender at 1B, but he appears to be more competent in both glove and bat than Dalbec and Franchy.

I just hope there's plenty of money or a really good prospect coming along, because that AAV is... yikes.

Being able to avoid watching Bobby and Franchy field 1B makes this worthwhile by itself.

Yeah, let's see how this shakes out before overreacting but Boston had the stated goal of retooling while also not punting the season.

Thus far, they've given up a good catcher, a bad reliever, and something else for:

A giant upgrade at 1B, an improvement in the OF, a cost-controlled backup catcher, and 2 interesting prospects.

Boston is probably a better team than it was a week ago, and they're gotten cheaper, increased their flexibility and acquired a couple prospects.

This seems like a good hold steady deadline thus far.

In Hosmer, JBJ and Verdugo, Boston would have 3 of the top 15 hitters in percentage of PAs ending with a ground ball hit to second base.

Duquette 2.0 has been my thinking. And early Duquette--not throw money at Manny and trade for Pedro Duquette.

I don't know what the plan is. But there's a million things about this that we aren't privy to. But just because we don't have a plan doesn't mean there isn't one, and it would be foolish to think Chaim is just throwing darts out there or operating willy-nilly.

The folks calling this a giant upgrade at first realize that Hosmer is still a below-average hitter, right? This is the equivalent of going from living in a wet cardboard box to living in a tin shack with a nice paint job but no doors.

Hosmer has a 112 OPS+. Dom Smith has a 61 OPS+.

Sure, there’s always a chance Smith turns it around and Hos falls off a cliff but he is miles better than Smith right now.
Yeah, I don't have any problem with the Hosmer pickup assuming it's nearly free. I do think Smith has upside and that's been lost in his role-less Mets situation. I also suspect Sox could have had either and made a choice, which I don't think is unreasonable.
