For real or nah? That seems like a bad plan.

If Hamilton can play SS at a major league level I'd rather plug him in.
It all depends on the extent of Duvall's injury, right? I mean, if he's out for a couple weeks with a sprain or whatever, you make do with what you have (whichever of Dalbec, Hamilton, Duran, etc makes the most sense). If he's out for a lot longer, then maybe they explore outside options. If it comes to that, though, I have to think they aim higher than Jose Iglesias.

Hand is an informed guy. I would lean toward expecting bad news if this is what he is saying.
The part that really worries me is that, if you scroll down, Hand says that "they know what the injury is and it's not good." Ugh.

Replacing Duvall’s bat with Chang’s is a pretty crushing blow. Guess this shows what they think of Duran. Ugh.
Most likely true. Though the caveat in the short term is they're facing a bunch of LHP so it makes more sense to bring up a RHH to replace Duvall for now. Doesn't mean they don't bring Duran up in a week when they start seeing more RHP.

There is nothing, I repeat, nothing, that Jarren Duran can do on a baseball field that Ramiel Tapia can't do better. I don't love Bobby Dalbec as our other shortstop, but the front office has this one right.

Talk about a buzz kill. Duvall was looking like a nice run producer for this team. His replacement is likely going to be a hole in the lineup. Hopefully he’s back at some point along with Story.

I don’t think Dalbec is the other SS. Chang/Hernandez.

Just sucks. Here's a guy who gets off to a phenomenal start, carrying the team, and of COURSE he goes down. Maybe for a long time? (I admit to projecting my worry here onto the situation...)

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Dalbec anywhere sounds terrible. Means he'll have to bat.
Last year Dalbec's OPS v. LHP was .755, better than league average for a 112 OPS+. He was .720 v. LH starters, which was a hair above league average. In 2021, it was .877 OPS, 135 OPS+, and .813, 119 OPS+.

SSS, but he hit in spring training and he's hitting at Worcester, so there's no indication he's mechanically messed up or in a slup at the moment.

He's a good option for a stretch of heavy LHP.

Given their stated intention to be careful with Rafaela, I would be very surprised to see him now. I'm not sure how Dalbec helps to fill the gap, unless they really intend to play him in the middle infield, with Kike moving to CF, at least against LHP. It seems more likely that they would put Tapia in CF vs RHP, and vs LHP put Chang at SS and Kike in CF.

If the absence is to be prolonged, I suspect we will see Hamilton before Rafaela.

If this is a prolonged absence, would a Rafaela callup be on the table? It would at least be a defensive upgrade with him on the field.
I hope not. Best case scenario is an extra win or two this year, worst case is he's no better than Durran would be and you've stunted his development. Let him take his natural path.

Agree with this 100%. I'm bullish on Rafaela and do not want his development to be hindered in any way by rushing him.

Well, this sucks. We were really cooking offensively, and Duvall was a huge part of that. He did eyeball as somewhat stretched defensively in CF, but with that offensive contribution no one was complaining about that.

As for a replacement, we're likely really talking about a replacement until Story is back — so June optimistically, end of July realistically. We need RH power and up-the-middle defense. I think Yu Chang picks up the bulk of this playing time, with Hernández moving to CF, until Adalberto Mondesí is ready (May?). That will be a step back offensively, but likely a big step forward defensively at two positions.

Bobby Dalbec, starting middle infielder, is definitely a compelling story line and might be fun to watch, but it also feels like a defensive/injury catastrophe waiting to happen. But hey, Oneil Cruz is even bigger than Dalbec, so it's not total madness.

At what position though? Playing him at SS or 2B doesn’t seem ideal.

I’m thinking Yu becomes the starting SS with Kiké to CF, and Dalbec is there as a pinch bat to hit for Yu late in the game. Once that happens, Kiké finishes game at SS and Refsnyder/Tapia move to OF. So Dalbec isn’t likely to play much middle infield.

Based on him having an x-ray yesterday and Bloom saying that they would have an update tomorrow, I think there’s a non-zero chance he fractured something and he’s having surgery today and the update this afternoon is on how well the surgery went. I’ve been wrong before though. A LOT.

Can't Arroyo play short too? Dalbec at 2B / Arroyo at SS doesn't sound terrible.
Dalbec played almost as many games at SS this spring as he did 3B (6 at SS, 7 at 3B), and he played none at 2B. If he plays middle infield, he'll be at short and Arroyo (or Chang) at 2B. I fully expect that would be a temporary solution unless Dalbec starts swinging a hot bat.

I would agree with this....the little that i know about these things is that x-rays are only able to see bone and an MRI is needed to see damage to tendon/ligaments. Therefore I would guess Duvall did not break his wrist. I think the more likely scenario is some type of tendon injury/re-injury of what happened last season. I would also guess that they might have sent the MRI results to the doctor that performed his recent surgery who most likely is not affiliated with the Red Sox.
