The upgrade from Dalbec to Cooper might be 4+ wins. It’s not much different than acquiring and all star when you factor on the replacement value.

Always made sense. Red Sox are lucky someone of his caliber is available, frankly.

The exact level of move they should be making under the circumstances. Bravo.

Honestly I think the Cubs have made a mistake here, Busch could just be a flash in the pan. Maybe the cash is all his 1.5M salary.

Why do I have the feeling they’re DFA’ing Dalbec

hoping it’s something like moving Soup to the 60 day
Given how slim the depth is on the 40-man when it comes to position players, I'd actually be surprised if Dalbec is DFA just yet. I mean, the only 40-man position player who is playing in the minors right now is Grissom. Everyone else is either on the active roster or injured. Frankly that goes for the pitchers too so I doubt it's a DFA at all to clear space. Seems more likely it will be someone to the 60-day IL (Walter?) to clear a spot and Dalbec will be optioned to make room on the 26-man.

OK, but doesn't this make the "circumstances" seem more dire? (I.e., they don't expect Casas back for a looooooooooong time?)
I think the best case scenario for Casas has been two months minimum recovery. Presumably that would be followed by a rehab assignment so now we're optimistically talking about a return around the All Star break. They can't really do 2.5 months of Dalbec and Reyes at 1B and expect to compete. Grabbing Cooper for cash is a no-brainer.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Excellent news. It's a shame Dalbec couldn't hit his weight. He's looked good over there at 1B defensively.

The 40 man choice is going to be interesting.

I’m really not sure it’s than interesting consider Dalbec is an unusable baseball player.

He has had his chances, he can’t hit baseballs. Hasn’t hit them at the major league level in 3 years. It should be over for him.

At the very least, Dalbec needs a fresh start, it’s not going to happen for him here. I would have him being DFAd as the 40-man move, can’t imagine it is one the org could possibly regret.

As hard as I've been on Bobby, I'd avoid cutting him from the 40 if I can. An injury to Cooper and we're right back to where we are now, and where we are now has demonstrated that Dalbec has value on defense even if his bat is a black hole.

I agree. As bad as he’s been, I think you need him.

The time to get rid of him was over the winter when you could have replaced him easier.

I don't mind putting Casas on the 60-man. This dude is crucial to the future of the franchise. We need to get him *actually healthy.* One of the reasons I'm glad that they could nab Cooper, a competent big league 1B, is so that we don't need to rush Casas.

Cooper will do. Adequate defensively, upgrades the roster and the depth majorly. If he gives us a wrc+ of 110 from the right side, that'll go a long way to keeping the team afloat these next few months. And then he can DH from the right side, and depending on what happens with Yoshida, maybe more.

He's pretty neutral, split-wise, for what it's worth. Above average against both right and left handers, but better against lefties.

Is the 60 day backdated to his initial IL placement?
As in the clock to when he's eligible to return? Yes, it would be 60 days from his initially being placed on the IL. Earliest he can be activated now is June 20. Odds are good he won't be back on that date.

For what it’s worth, Cora mentioned that Dalbec‘s bunt before Rafaela’s sac fly was the turning point of today’s game. He seems to love the guy. In addition, he has been really good at 1st defensively and also plays a decent 3B when Raffy needs a breather, especially against a tough LHP. All this tells me that Reyes roster spot could be in danger, especially with Grissom back soon and the fact he doesn’t seem to play SS even in a pinch anymore.

I'd vote Hamilton off the island. He never seemed to play SS.

I think I’d rather have Hamilton than either Valdez or Reyes at this point. He is obviously a great pinch running option, can likely play 2B, SS in a pinch and maybe 3b in an emergency. You can’t say the same about Valdez, and Reyes becomes redundant once Grissom is back.

Isn’t Reyes the only backup 3B, assuming Dalbec goes for Cooper?

Yes, you have to keep one of Reyes or Dalbec to back up 3B. I imagine that's ultimately Reyes.

Reyes has started in 121 starts of his 203 MLB games played. 30 of those starts were at SS with a total of 40 games played at the position. In parts of 10 seasons in the minors he played 191 games at SS, starting 184.
