As I've said to a bunch of folks via email recently, anything from the 1970's and upwards, with the exception of rookie cards and other notable cards (like Nolan Ryan first 4-5 years, etc.) are basically going to be worthless unless they grade perfectly, but they would cost too much to grade in most cases anyway). Even stuff like an 1983 Boggs Rookie is worth very little unless it's graded and grades high. A Mint 9 Boggs gets around $125 at last check, an ungraded one maybe $10. To get a Mint 9 isn't like getting hit by lightning, but it's pretty close.

Here's an article on dumping commons/ungraded cards:

https://www.cardboardconnection.com/what-to-do-with-sports-card-commons

DJ's company he posted is a good place to donate, and I know folks that have also used https://commons4kids.org/

If folks are local in the Boston area, I'm always happy to rip through folks collections and give them my thoughts (no charge, I just love doing it). Thousands of cards doesn't even faze me and I can tell you the name of the player on most cards from 1975-1995 just by looking at the picture, so I get through them very quickly.
Thank you, I really appreciate your time. I'll start pouring over them and see if there's anything interesting. I know I have the rookie Pedro card with the Dodgers although I feel like that may be fairly typical. Sounds like pretty much scan Ebay for some of the interesting ones and donate otherwise. It really is so much fun looking through them all, I'm ready to get smacked with some nostalgia. Thanks for your help!

So I will admit to buying some WWE cards from time to time (although that will probably end soon with their move to Panini, as I can't imagine paying football and basketball prices for WWE cards, but their first set comes in two weeks and its Prizm with a $700 SRP for a hobby box).

But I bought a Finest box over the weekend, and pulled this:

A Rey Mysterio Superfractor auto 1/1. I am trying to wrap my head around what I could get for it--I've got to assume at least $1200 or so.

I know virtually nothing about WWE wrestlers, but I'll do some research tomorrow on equivalent 1/1's tomorrow and post them. The equivalent 1/1 from Finest for some guy named Roven Reigns or something sold for like 8k.

Really appreciate that and I've been doing the same--The Reigns that sold for 8K was the Superfractor of his base card. I think Rey is like at the Jeff Hardy, Kane level, which is why I am assuming like 1200-2500.

I am actually interested in what the Panini move does for WWE card values. It might goose everything as people start to look at WWE Cards as more of an investment, or it might backfire as WWE fans refuse to spend so much. I mean last year, you could get a box of Topps Undisputed, which had 10 packs with 8 guaranteed autos for $400 and now Prizm is going for more than double that with one quarter of the autos in a box.

I don’t follow wrestling, but know enough that Reigns is the guy WWE has been trying to push for the last 5+ years as the next Rock, Stone Cold, etc. Unlike those guys, though, many fans have pushed back and haven’t accepted him as the face of the franchise. Wrestling fans are like Star Wars fans now; they’re impossible to please and very vocal about how the stories should be written.

That Mysterio card is an absolute dream. I am truly jealous.

DOTB is going to do way better than I am on this but I wanted to play the prospecting game too.

To DOTB's point, the Reigns sold for a bit over 8k - on one hand he is the S-tier star of WWE right now (and it's a great looking Reigns card), however it is also not signed (he has a signed superfractor auto in the set as an insert, that market would be intereting). This may be an oddly high outlier - the 2020 Reigns superfractor from Finest sold for "only" 2.3k as a buy it now, but the person may have underpriced that. I think Reigns is probably the Trout of this hobby at this point.

More in the Mysterio realm, the most relevant comp I saw on Ebay's saved listing was 2020 Finest Shinsuke Nakamura: a massive star in the international market, autographed, Topps Finest, non-rookie and male, which sold BIN for $625. In comparison, the /10 sold for $40 on a best offer. If you apply the same multiplier (about 16x as we have a /10 for Mysterio that sold for $115) to Mysterio, you get to about $1800. This feels aggressive to me personally (I think the Nakamura /10 went for a bit under what my gut says it should and someone may have ponied up for the 1/1), but the thing with Superfractors is that they are really hard to price out given you need the right buyer...but there's also no competing market. If they want the 1/1, they HAVE to go through you. This would be the crown jewel (sorry) of a Rey Mysterio superfan's collection, they exist. As a wrestler, he's also one of the small handful who has a highish floor. Like, the WWE can probably on a whim decide a wrestler is irrelevant, but Mysterio has so much history and fan nostalgia built up that he's probably less risky than most other wrestlers. As for why I feel $1800 may be high, my reason is Asuka. The second higher superfractor from the set sold on Ebay right now is a signed Asuka (similar to Nakamura and Mysterio - international superstar with a major following) which went on best offer for $775. Mysterio and Asuka had very similar markets for their Transcendent /5 (mid-300s for both), so I think the high end comps were in the same realm. With that said, Asuka is kind of all over the place pricing wise on autos, so this may be a small sample size deal, and Asuka is out on injury and Mysterio is an active performer.

My gut feeling is your pricing is about right. It's a tough call since it seems it's like other cards where it runs hot on release and then cools off sales wise, so there is a risk to listing it high and hoping it sells before the fervor dies down, but Wrestlemania weekend with a new set? If you're gonna sell it's probably a good time.

So Ken Goldin & Drake did an '86 Fleer and '21 Panini Flawless box break last night. Video here. Three MJ rookies and three MJ sticker. Pretty fun watch, and again it's good to be Drake.

They aren't going to Panini, they are going to Fanatics, who recently bought Topps and will eventually have 3 of the 4 major sports licenses as well (already have MLB and the NBA and NFL have bought into Fanatics as well). With the Topps acquisition, WWE will likely stay under that brand.

It's worse than that. They still are going to Panini on a multi-year deal, with the first Panini set due out this week (co-released with WrestleMania this weekend). But WWE and Fanatics announced this week that Fanatics will be taking the card license after the Panini deal finishes. So WWE effectively kneecapped Panini and made them a lame duck before the first set of theirs comes out in a multi-year deal.

Anyone have suggestions for selling stuff online other than eBay? Ideally, I'd like someone to take the entire lot. My wife is on me to get rid of this stuff (along with my Yaz painting I bought from Rip) as we downsize everything.

I'm taking mine to a couple memorabilia shops for "bids". Some good posts in the last few pages here about newer (1980s and forward) stuff and how worthless it generally is

Yeah I cherry picked a few hundred cards I cared about. First guy offered me $100 for the rest, second guy wasn't interested at all, third guy told me to hurry back to the first guy if he offered me that much. Ended up trading the rest for a 1980 Rickey.

Does your wife not know your username here?

I have heard some people use Facebook marketplace.

Selling individually is a PITA. Selling the whole thing seems you'll never get decent value. I think it may be better to sell in lots. But unless you trust someone in the business, it's bad in any way.

Maybe go to shows and trade? (i.e. get rid of bigger pieces and trade for smaller ones you would want)

Believe it or not, she doesn’t seem to care about my username LOL. I hate to sell it, but she’s right that I won’t have the space for some of my things like this when we downsize. In fairness, she’s downsizing too, so it’s hard to argue with her about it.

I had a really nice collection that I sold off in 1990 for about $10,000 before the market completely crashed on it all. I now have a tote of more obscure stuff that I don’t recall finding values for back in the day. I’ll have to pull it off the closet shelf and search online. It could be worth $50 total or $5,000. I literally have no idea.

Dad and I used to go to card shows regularly in the 80’s and did quite well. With him passing a few months back, it’s not remotely the same.

Better card 3:38 in.

But not kidding that Portagee is a 10000000000 times better opener/handler of cards than that guy.

I met this guy the other night. He was showing me photos of his collection all night. Seemed impressive. Says he starting up a social media company around cards and memorabilia.
Is this the guy? Seems like an awesome scumbag.

That painting is so good.

Anyway, the Wander sticker auto thing, out of curiosity, would you prefer a redemption if you were guaranteed it on card, encased but where it may take months or years? Like, Inception is not a low end product, and this is the gem card of the set, and it's a sticker auto + an unrelated player worn patch? It's kind of a bummer. I mean I'll never have the card but still even with my distaste for redemptions, I think I'd rather wait if I was ensured of getting it.

Anyone up for a box break? Maybe 2021 Bowman Chrome Draft? Jumbo Hobby Box seems to go for $1,100 so like $35 per team? You know you want that Marcelo Mayer auto!
