In an announcement posted to YouTube on Wednesday, Cumulus Media said that "790 The Score" is coming back and will feature 24-7 sports programming, including national sports personality Jim Rome, local sports talk radio host Kevin McNamara, as well as game coverage of New York Yankees baseball, Boston Celtics basketball as well as Brown University football and basketball games.

This is great (for mornings and afternoons) I actually think Rome is a huge improvement on Felger/Mazz and Fairia/Lumer

Will they just use the Grande/Max feed or have their own announcers?

more competition is good

Why Yankees baseball???
Because they can't get the Red Sox?

Like Ale says, there are plenty of Yankee fans in Providence. And there's a limited number of options for affiliating with live sports. Yankee games are bound to get a better rating than a generic talk show off the satellite.

I don’t think any team has multiple home announcer teams, but happy to be proven wrong.
If teams have multiple announce teams, it's usually for different languages (like the Sox have a Spanish language radio team in addition to Castig and company). If this station is going to carry the C's, it'll be Grande and Max.

I was a listener of the Score the first time around, Cordischi's solo show was usually solid (he was well-known locally to the point that his prostitute solicitation charge was a notable news story). But they had GRESH! soon out of college when he hadn't yet improved to passable like he is now, and the grating Amy Lawrence. "Coach" (don't remember his name) who worked with Amy was the Providence equivalent of Dale Arnold.

I believe they had pushed out Rome and went with a full local calendar, and probably not coincidentally folded within a year or two after that. Rome probably helped draw some Mass listeners who would otherwise listen to Boston sports talk. WEEI was an upgrade for me *at the time* when the Score was ending, and what shouldn't be underestimated are the FM status of WEEI and even The Sports Hub which doesn't have a local signal in RI. The Score never had professional sounding acoustics and some folks may settle for the Boston stations rather than listening local if the sound quality of 790AM is worse. We'll see what kind of product they put out. The one differentiation between the Providence and Boston audiences will probably be college basketball and numerous Yankees fans...if the PC Friars are in the mix they could steal some listeners.

I used to listen to 790 back in the day when WEEI was insufferable.

It was John "Coach" Colletto, who was OK. Also didn't mind Cordischi and Zolak and John Rooke were fine in small doses. Disliked Gresh from the start, who played football at URI in case you didn't know. ;)

Oh I know, especially since I was attending URI while he was there and the football team had an especially infamous incident with an assault on a campus fraternity. Gresh was not one of the players booted or suspended, but it seems like whether involved or not the entire team probably knew about this planned attack and did nothing to stop it.

I know I'll give it a try here and there to see if there will be URI content, but with them airing Brown Bears games and having Kevin McNamara I won't be holding my breath.

Wow, didn't know about that. Everyone should have to drink whenever Gresh mentions playing URI football, insufferable.

Amy Lawrence got her start there. She was being sexually harassed by another on-air personality and left. Her stories are out there if you want to read them.
