I am wondering what they are using to verify this.   I work at a higher-ed institution, so at first I thought it may work with my @blahblahblah.edu email.   Nope- checking addresses.  So I grabbed the home address of a random student, and it still said ineligible. They wouldn't make it as easy as to be the school mailing address...would they?
For me it asked for my name, the college I attended, and DOB. I believe it checks school records?

IANAL, but I'm fairly certain that it would be a breach of confidentiality for the school to disclose that info without express permission to anyone other than a potential employer or government (federal/state/local) entity conducting official business.

Don't know how else they would check that info without having access to some sort of info?

Asking for the DOB is interesting and makes me wonder if they're cutting it off at a certain age to prevent others (faculty, staff, parents, class auditors, etc.) from hopping on. Of course, this would be possible age discrimination.

FYI to anyone considering purchasing the standalone Sunday Ticket from DirecTv, I just bought the mobile only package (for $200), and upon completion got the following message: GREAT NEWS! YOU’VE JUST BEEN UPGRADED TO NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV MAX (all devices, plus red zone channel. listed price $359) AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. ENJOY.

Confirmed, this worked for me. Thanks, WBV! I prefer to stream games on the PS3, this just saved me some cash. Red Zone is a nice touch!

how do local area blackouts work on Sunday Ticket? If my niece is a freshman in massachusetts and I create an account using her info, would the Pats games get blacked out for me here in New York?

Worked for me, too! Thanks! Boyfriend and I had been debating if we should go for the "connected device" level or stick with phone/tablet- really glad you posted this!

I signed up for this shit. Got the connected device level, and got no free upgrade. Then, I read this thread.

So, I called them. They can't find the account. Finally transferred to a guy who was like, "oh, I helped another customer 'solve' this problem yesterday. Here's what we did. He canceled the account, then signed up for a cheaper package, and then the upgrade automatically got sent out."

That's what I did.

Thanks for the post, but holy fuck, what a terrible policy. Effectively I was paying more and getting less.

Thanks again. =)

I asked my wife who is an administrator at a university and if DirectTV called and asked if someone was a student they'd likely be told "it would be a violation of our privacy policy to give that sort of information out over the phone without consent directly from the student."

They use a third party service, and they're not inventing the wheel here.

Do you need to be a DirecTV subscriber to get this (or fudge a reason why you can't be one?)?

Never mind... Found the site and my address isn't eligible unless I get DTV.

I *think* you need to *not* be a directv subscriber because you can't, but I am not certain. I am not, and cannot.

This probably isn't the best thread to bump but it's Sunday Ticket related and it's that time of year again....

I called in to remove my auto-bill/auto-renewal for the NFL package this years.  I then told the customer service representative that I actually wanted to cancel DirecTV all together.  I'm no longer under contract with them and the only reason I have DirecTV is for the Sunday Ticket.  "Times are tight right now and my wife is making me get rid of it".  Fwiw, I'm not married but they don't know that.

In any case, they transferred me to Customer Retention and after just a few minutes they gave me the package for free (and actually took off $20/month for all programming for six months).  I've been a DirecTV customer for over 15 years so maybe that helps but I'm pretty sure they're willing drop or remove the fee in many cases regardless.

Supposedly, the early you call in to negotiate the Sunday Ticket price, the better.  So if you want to try and get it for free, call this week.  Good luck.
I also do this every year and always get the ticket for free, $10 off per month for a year or $20 off per month for 6 months, free movie channels for 3-6 months, and a few months of free hdtv.

I used to fake the cancel, but now I expect it and really would cancel if it isn't offered. I will be calling tomorrow and fully expect this deal.

Yeah, seems like it's there solely for people who can't get the dish (apartment bldg, no sight line to the satellite).

Out of curiosity I used my work address too but that one told me "call this number for DirecTV For Business." Guess it's. Red zone and the audio app through Verizon Wireless for me!

Yeah this makes no sense that somehow DirecTV has student records.

No, it wouldn't. Do you think StateU is giving DirecTV access to a student's grades? Directory information can be made public, as long as a school gives notice. Something like, "hey, we're going to permit companies that want to confirm your attendance for the purpose of giving you discounts and free shit to do so, unless you opt out. Let us know, k?"

Or even a blanket notice, eg, https://registrar.wisc.edu/ferpa_directory_information.htm

yup... Amazon uses this info as well as Newegg. Otherwise it would be easy to exploit the student discounts they offer

I tried the annual "I want to cancel Sunday Ticket" game today, and they called my bluff. No counter offer, no second level agent. They just shut it off without negotiation. Now I need to figure out a way to get back in at a decent price. Hmmmm.

FERPA involves more than grades, but, yeah, if students sign a waiver agreeing to allow this kind of information to be released, than obviously FERPA doesn't apply at that point.

It involves more than grades, but it specifically permits disclosure of directory information, which is precisely what we're talking about here. And it doesn't require signing of a waiver; it just requires notice and the ability to opt out.

I've made the same mistake in the past. You have to say that you want to cancel DIRECTV, the whole thing.

If you're not under contract just say you want to cancel your subscription with DirecTV (tell them Cox, Comcast or whoever is doing a promotion that your wife wants).  They'll get you over to the Retention Team.  Explain that the only reason you even have DirecTV is the sports packages - primarily the NFL Ticket - and if you're not going to order it this year there is zero reason to keep DirecTV.

Did you pay all up front or go with the installment? Wondering if you only get upgraded if you pay in full upon signing up.

Not only you can, you also get Redzone and the NFL Network. I've had it for the last 5 years and it's amazing.

But it's only available for those outside the U.S. (or those who know how to use VPNs).

Or those willing to violate terms of service/commit fraud.

Can we not turn this into another lengthy discussion of the pros and cons of piracy? The information about gamepass is upthread for those interested, and using a VPN is not rocket surgery. Why don't we just let people who want to pretend they live in Kabul do so, and let others pay an extra $100 bucks and live without streaming the NFL Network andMonday Night Football?

While I will not argue that it probably is a violation of the terms of service, I would not call it piracy. You would still pay full price for the content to the NFL.

FWIW, I am a long-time DirecTV customer, and have a pretty decent package of channels with them (Sunday Ticket, sports pack, HBO, etc.)  I called them this morning, went directly to the "cancel my service" option, and was immediately connected with a super helpful dude who practically fell over himself finding various discounts he could give me. When all was said and done, I ended up not just getting Sunday Ticket for free, but also an additional $65 (!) off my regular monthly bill for the next 12 months (around 40% off). The only catch on my end was committing to keep the service for those 12 months.

Anyway, if you're a DirecTV subscriber that's been with them for any length of time, I'd definitely recommend giving this a try. I've done this sort of thing a couple times in the past and gotten $20-30 off my bill for some limited amount of time, but it seems like the size of the discounts they are now willing to give people who threaten to cancel have increased substantially. I'm guessing stories like this may have something to do with this phenomenon.

No, you wouldn't. You'd pay the price set for people located in country x, which is lower than the price set by the NFL/DirecTV in the US, because the demand is different. Every person who falsely states he is in another country to receive gamepass is taking some amount of money out of DirecTV's pockets by fraudulent means (Ironically enough, to the benefit of the NFL). Piracy, fraud, whatever. People will do what they will, but I'd rather they not advocate for it and call those of us unwilling to do so stupid.

Thanks everybody for this thread. I called up DirecTV based on suggestions here - I didn't threaten to cancel but just said I was considering doing so. They were eager to give discounts - took $30 off per month and half off the NFL League pass, though it required a 1 year commitment.

Yeah the price is definitely right I'm just worried about stream quality and gamethread delay. But I guess it's better than trying to use a VPN from a dorm room.

I'm not an expert, Red but I'm pretty sure you should be able to subscribe to Gamepass. That should give you live (slightly delayed) feeds of all games or, for a slightly lower price, for just one team. With a VPN you could save a few quid but would be technically stealing those.

Thanks..not on the VPN stuff...but just on the generalities. Free Sunday ticket in addition to $40 off my regular package is pretty substantial.

They tried to pitch me on the genie DVR for an additional $3 per month (and a 24 month commitment). I like the idea of watching two games at a time, but begged off due to the 24 month thing. Anyone think Genie is worth it?

Thanks again.

I have a genie dvr, if you have the right antenna (anything relatively modern, I think) it's actually 4-tuner. Never have recording conflicts, picture in picture works (though I never use it). It can also drive RVU equipped TVs so you can watch directv on those sets without a box (uses one of the tuner slots on the genie to do it).

It's also a much better / more modern box than their other set-top box hardware. It has a few quirks/weirdnesses but I generally like it.

Just signed up for the student package thanks to this thread! First time subscribing to Sunday Ticket (previously either lived in Boston/went to a bar/resorted to free streams) - hopefully things are smooth this year.
