Silver is getting in too deep here. The owners cannot be happy with him right now.

This is a great day for the future of the Boston Celtics. That is the message to take from today, right?

Fantastic.  Good for Silver, this clearly took some guts but he did the right thing.  It will be interesting to see how the other owners react to this.

The guy is a huge nerd, no doubt....but I think he's handling himself quite well.

Yes.  That is my takeaway for sure.  This mess will be tied up in the courts for years, right?  I don't see Sterling accepting this punishment and walking away.

He's reminding me of Tom Cruise in a Few Good Men before he chugs the water and approaches Nicholson.

I don't know about that, forcing Sterling out of the picture would help the Clippers retain their players and Doc.

edit- Good points above about the long drawn out court battles.

Seriously.  He sounds so nervous.

I dont know, there have been what a handful of lifetime bans in all of sports?  Its pretty extreme and considering the guy hasnt had a full year on the job yet, I can understand his nerves.

I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling

Talk about a hypocrite:

Because this is a very slippery slope. What Donald said was wrong. It was abhorrent. There's no place for racism in the NBA, any business I'm associated with, and I don't want to be associated with people who have that position.

But at the same time, that's a decision I make. I think you've got to be very, very careful when you start making blanket statements about what people say and think, as opposed to what they do. It's a very, very slippery slope.

Stand where? Sterling has almost zero recourse. He more or less signs away his rights to let the NBA do this to him.

I expect a unanimous vote regardless of them being happy or not. Cuban was the only one publicly showing skepticism on a forced sale and he came out saying he 100% supports Silver. 28 more will surely follow.

Hopefully the suggestion that the Celtics are the 'big winners' is sarcasm and jokes that are just not coming through on this medium.

They don't really have any answer for why he hasn't been investigated or fined or anything before

Without defending a word of what Sterling said, and playing the Devil's Advocate, has the NBA ever fined Sterling before for untoward behavior/language,  and if not, does a 1st time offense for using offensive/racist language warrant a lifetime ban and or loss of the franchise?

Cuban's problem is speaking before he has been given all the facts and he's always had that problem. He's not a hypocrite, he said one thing and then was given the legal basis by NBA attorneys, and now supports it as he feels risk has been taken into account and they are all clear.

The last few days have just been about lawyers, internally. I believe that when Silver says he made the final decision this morning he is saying that this morning he was convinced by NBA attorneys that they were safe.

I'm hoping so too. How exactly do we benefit? The pick they owe us is next season when Paul, Blake, DeAndre, etc and likely Doc are leading them to another 50+ win season.

I don't think Sterling owns the Staples Center, so Silver can ban him from the attending all NBA games among other things.

they haven't, someone specifically asked that in the press conference and Silver basically dodged the question by mentioning Sterling won his court cases and they didn't have enough evidence

To be fair to Cuban, I think he was talking about something like the NBA itself forcing the sale (or the kind of 'everyone is a free agent' kind of actions); all Silver really did was kick the can to the owners, who can make that decision themselves. It's not clear what will happen if the owners vote to let him keep the team; but if the sponsors dropping out puts enough pressure, they can certainly argue that his actions have financially harmed the league

But yeah, I'm pretty impressed by how far they were willing to go this quickly (I guess the NBA really believes in the twitter/etc kind of environment, letting a scandal linger can make things a lot worse)

MYRTLE BEACH!!!!
A lifetime ban means he can't have any operational or organizational involvement. He's a majority stockholder without a vote at this point. Which means he sues or he sells. Rich people don't like other people making decisions about their money.

If a further penalty is given, can they yank the 1st round pick?
There is no way the league can take away a pick that was included in a trade that the league already approved and that is now controlled by another team.
