What are the odds of scoring with a man on 1st and no outs?
Score an average of 43% of the time.

But not sure that's entirely the same as this situation--the game situation states you MUST stop that run from scoring. Not all the examples used to come up with those numbers have the same parameter.

The Grey Eagle, I believe, wrote a very funny post a couple of years ago suggesting a variety of rule changes that baseball should adopt in order to make the game more like exciting, meaning more like football. I believe this thread is entitled to a reprint.

That’s also just an overall average; in reality the 3 hitters due up would be a pretty big factor to the point where teams would not always choose to hit.

Available bullpen arm would matter too.

If it was an affiliated league, I'd hate it. The honest answer here is that because it's an indie league, I don't care.

I don't know much about the Frontier League anymore… I used to be familiar with a few of the towns in the league and they were generally ones without much in the way of live entertainment, but the people there still have an affiliated minor league team within an hour's drive (and an MLB team within a couple of hours), so it's easy enough for most of their target audience to head out of town for the evening and see a higher level of baseball if that's what they're looking for. With that in mind, these indie leagues should be doing far crazier things for the sake of attracting people to the park than rule changes for a seldom seen 11th inning. They should all have at least a little bit of the Savannah Bananas or the antics of old barnstorming teams in them.

Am I one of the few people that find football virtually unwatchable. It’s so painfully boring. 2 minutes takes half an hour. Actual total amount of action is what…15 minutes?
It’s mostly watching refs run around, teams huddle, teams set up, then a quick bit of action then more walking around. It’s like the worst part of the old LOOGY guys throwing to 1st a million times or the batter calling TO and the pitcher taking forever between pitches.

Manfred is out for any way he can sneak game-ruining ideas in.

Remember those "We're just doing this for this year because of Covid" things from 2020 that carried over into 2021?

The guy is going to kill Baseball. Or, at the very least, any interest I had in it.

This is a dumb rule. Even worse than the runner on second debacle.
Preach. I'm really tired of leagues trying to come up with stupid new ways to do OT. None of them improve the game. It's not about make the odds even. It's about changing the rules of the game at the most high-leverage moment.

I'm with you. It's like watching a 3 hour commercial with 15 minutes of football sprinkled in. I watched the Bucs game to see what could be Brady's last. I was entertained, but there's no way I'd put myself through that every Sunday. I was more amused watching my friend's young boys fight over toys on the floor.

Baseball has been targeting extra inning games, as if that's the fucking problem. So dumb it hurts. I'm gonna learn not to care.

To show how stupid other sports league's overtime rules are, this is what baseball would be if they looked at other sports for inspiration:

Football sytle rules:
  1. Only play max of 2 innings (in regular season, unlimited in the playoffs) (2 innings is 22% of a 9 inning game, 10 minutes is 17% of a regulation game)
  2. If visitors score 2 runs in top of 10th inning, game is over
  3. If they score 1 run, home team has chance to tie or win
  4. If they don't score, home team just needs 1 run to win
  5. If neither team scores in the 10th, then next team to score a run wins. (In regular season, the game would remain a tie after 11 innings)
Hockey style rules:
  1. 10th inning - play with only 7 defensive players - and only 2 outs for the offense to score
  2. If still tied, go to a home run derby
Baskeball rules:
  1. Play using normal rules
  2. Play 1 inning, if game is still tied, play another inning (1 inning is 11% of a 9 inning game, 5 minutes is 10% of a regulation game)
Come to think of it, the NBA may be on to something, maybe MLB should do something similar

And I doubt it does much of anything for the mythical "speed of the game" either.
Well, other issues with it aside this will absolutely make games shorter since they can never go beyond the top half of the 11th inning.

Soccer's home-away is an interesting comparison, also.

1. Allow ties, but...
2. Distribute wins for any ties at the end of the season series between the two teams, using run differential with a tie-breaker for "away" runs.

This would also mildly disincentivize allowing blowouts, e.g. by having position players pitch.
