Glad they acted decisively and quickly.  Wasn't looking forward to having the USA's number 1 striker be part of an extended soap opera in the lead up to the world cup.

NBCSN reporting Fabio Borini collapsed at halftime and has been taken from the stadium in an ambulance.

Cardiff up 2-0; Sunderland looking like a team sure to be relegated. Poor effort, no inspiration, just a bad team.

And that's why it's a great game for neutrals - Sunderland score two late, including the equalizer in the last 10 seconds of stoppage time - and tie with Cardiff. Ginger Colback with the crucial strike after Fletcher (on for Borini) scored a poacher's special.

Sky cameras caught Tan booing his own team. Cardiff should do a Portsmouth and get that idiot out of there.

Sunderland down 2-1 (and home) to Southhampton. The Saints have dominated possession.

And Jozy Altidore looks AWFUL. Not tracking back, not hustling, not moving off the ball, not doing anything. Very discouraging. Last season, he had great success with his club and it translated to NT success. This season, he is in such poor form for club that the NT has to be worried. The announcers are opining he should be subbed off at halftime...just a pathetic and depressing display.

Awesome break by Ki, and the ball finds Adam Johnson for a bomb from the right-hand side of the box. Boruc has to save that.

Wes Brown steps right on Ramirez's ankle on the edge of the penalty area with no foul. Wow

Watched the game today. Sunderland were so bad in the first half, just not at the races. No tackles, no passion, low on energy and commitment, nothing happening when they got the ball. I was shocked at how bad Altidore was...i mean at least put a shift in and throw your weight around if you can't show any actual skill.

yeah yeah yeah this is basically my team in the premiership (although I;ve become under pressure from my Norwich City 5 year-old and scouser wife), and there's no way the mackems are going to relegate this year.

Is Mark still around here? I'm in London twice a week nowadays - beeeeeeeeer time!

Just tuned in, Jozy not even on the bench? Ouch. Just two weeks ago Poyet had his back, saying "he's the man for me" or something along those lines. Now some guy named Scocco with one appearance for Sunderland is on the teamsheet ahead of him for a cup final.

That is massively depressing. We have to hope for minor injury, right? Because the USMNT's "best" striker not making the 18 for a team that is facing relegation is another bad development.

QFT.  But, Aron Johannsson is having a fantastic season and Boyd has been steady their respective clubs.  I don't think that JK would bench Jozy though going into the WC, but he might have him on a short leash if he [Altidore] were to not get enough playing time to close out the EPL season.

I am somewhat surprised at how this season turned out for Jozy after the last two seasons in Holland.  I wasn't so sure coming back to the EPL was the best move myself, but I figured he could at least net 10-15 goals this season.  It should be interesting to see how the rest of this season plays out for him as the WC may end up being an audition for a new team to be move to.  I can't see him staying at Sunderland if he can't make there.

The transition from Holland is usually tough. As Barry Glendenning says on Football Weekly, goals in Holland should be measured in dog years.

I really wish Jozy had gone to a more stable club. Really anywhere but the northeast

I kinda wish Jozy had ended up with Everton. He'd fit nicely into that Lukaku sized hole they will have after this season.

If Poyet wants 25 million pounds for Steven Fletcher how much will he want for Jozy?

Great effort yesterday, Poyet certainly has them playing a tough brand of football. At the time, I would have paid a fair amount of money to see someone take out Bardsley, whose tough guy rolled up sleeves maniacal football was not making me feel good, but I have to say that the team clearly wanted the cup win and put everything they had into the efforts. On another day, Sunderland probably bring that Cup home, but those strikes by Yaya and Nasri were just too sublime to overcome. Fans were loud and the atmosphere seemed strong.

I'll always have affection for Sunderland after they cheered United's title loss when City found the winner versus QPR.

Also, Ki seems like a pretty good find. He closed Yaya a bit slowly on his goal, but he went up against a very solid midfield and held his own. Had a pretty good corner in him, too.

Up 1-0 at Old Trafford in the 35th minute.

I am shocked this team got their shit together and will probably avoid relegation given the way they looked at several points this season. Gus Poyet deserves a ton of credit, no matter how this turns out, because he has done an incredible job with a rather terrible team.

Borini hits the post in the 84th...still 1-0.

Sunderland hasn't won at Old Trafford (ManU) since 1968.

Poyet has said this has been the toughest few months of his professional life. I agree--he should get a medal or something. Between dealing with the fallout of management by Paolo Di Canio and a drinking culture, he's had his hands full.

United don't look like they have any idea how to get through, and they're a step slow. They're playing at a pace reminiscent of a highly technical Serie A side, but it's more like they aren't sure how to carve up Sunderland's defense. This is Moyes's United again.

Get Poyet a beer and medal...1-0 to seal Fulham and Cardiff's fate and to keep Sunderland up for another year. What an effort by Sunderland today.

Incredible.  Great achievement by Poyet.

The video from NBCSN of Poyet personally greeting every player with a hug or high five as they left the pitch was awesome. Not a lip reader but it sure seemed like a lot of "TOLD YOU WE COULD!" coming from the manager.

But giving Poyet too much credit would be a mistake. Lee Cattermole had an immense day; Borini and Larsson and Wickham all made big contributions and they would have been sunk without Wes Brown's efforts in defense. Great job by Sunderland, one and all.

But not yet safe...still need to win one more or draw two...prove everyone wrong (including me, up thread) and stay up Sunderland.

All over but the shouting. Even if Sunderland get no more points, they saty up unless Norwich take 4 points from Arsenal and Chelsea. It may be over before Sunderland plays their next game.

SAFE!

Four straight wins to jump well clear of the bottom of the table and into 14th.  They could get as high as 12th with 3 points in the last match of the season.
