Tara Sullivan: What Does the Globe Have Here?

Reading her column on the hubbub caused a decade ago when Augusta refused to let her into the locker room to interview Rory McIlroy.

When she first started at the Globe I felt they were kind of force feeding the “woman columnist who talks only about equality and social justice issues” angle. And to be sure she writes about those issues a lot. But I’m finding her columns to be very thought provoking and well-written.

What do others think?

I think she's great. I don't a!ways agree with her takes, but I think she's a terrific writer and breath of fresh air at a sports page that desperately needs one.

Yeah that’s my sense as well. I’m not sure what Joe Sullivan was really about but it seems like she was exactly the kind of hire that didn’t happen under his tenure [EDIT: it did, according to @Chad Finn]. Different voice, not simply one of the boys, etc.

In some ways she’s similar to what Sally Jenkins brings to WaPo in that she writes about the intersection of sports and social issues (instead of just sort of passing along male conventional wisdom on the subject at hand) but with more of a beat writer’s sensibility and insight into the daily grind of the sport itself.

I think the Sally Jenkins comparison is an apt one.
