The only person on that list likely to be better than Holt is Chavis.Happy he’s not a Tyler Wade-upgrade in New York but overall I’m fine with this. Holt is a fun player but he’s not going to be on the next great Red Sox team, and he’d likely impede our ability to see if Peraza, Chavis, Wong, Marco, Chatham, Lin or Jonathan Arauz will.
in 2018 his numbers were much better... Chaim decided on his utility infielder at that point. What am I missing about Peraza being a better option than Holt? Was he hurt last year? Because he was awful. (62 wRC+, 631 OPS)
Peraza is not yet 26 and was the #1 prospect in Atlanta’s system in 2015. Baseball Prospectus ranked him 92 on their top 100 list — two behind Devers — that same year. Holt turned out great and never had that pedigree. What am I missing about Peraza being a better option than Holt? Was he hurt last year? Because he was awful. (62 wRC+, 631 OPS)
And he still has an option left as opposed to Holt. I have argued for a few years this is the main thing recently killing the 1-2 WAR 30-32 year olds in FA but if all players could be optioned down (or just taken off the 25 man, made inactive) identically, I think that would help even the playing field for them and get them better contract offers. This I think is the one big card the players have to bargain with in the next CBA that the owners would like and that would be good for players as a whole, lengthening many careers a year or two IMO.Peraza is not yet 26 and was the #1 prospect in Atlanta’s system in 2015. Hardly a sure thing, but he has a solid defensive floor and three years of team control, and it seems certainly plausible to me Peraza rebounds into a 2-3 win player. If that happens, he could also be a decent trade chip when Downs is ready to go.
He was such a bright spot on those rough 2014-15 teams. Even when we sucked, he was always a joy to watch. I hope he absolutely shines in Milwaukee.Man, I'm really going to miss watching him play for the Sox, he put in so much effort every single day. I've never seen anything quite like this before or since:

Exactly what I was going to post.Almost as sad about this as Mookie.
Um...he signed for $3M and Holt was expected to make more? By just a lil bit but hey, every dollar counts when you're pinching pennies, right? What am I missing about Peraza being a better option than Holt? Was he hurt last year? Because he was awful. (62 wRC+, 631 OPS)
Yeah. I'm buying mlb.tv so that I can see him play regularly. I often felt that Cora didn't play him enough, but perhaps they have some medical guidelines the fans weren't aware of. Goodbye BROCKHOLT. I love you as much as I can love someone I never met!I hope Brock gets to play regularly and has a fantastic year.
Milwaukee is absolutely going to love him.
Peraza has similar versatility, recording defensive innings last season at 2B, SS, 3B, LF, and CF (and 1.1 innings on the mound). He also played RF once in 2018. I'll re-state that the writing on the wall for Holt in Boston truly was Peraza's signing.I can only guess that Holt might have asked for more than one year... will have to wait to see what Brockstah gets for $$$ and years from the Brewers.
Yes, we'll miss him (and Mookie, too) but with Peraza, Wong, Chavis, Hernandez, Lin, etc. , 2nd base is covered. The Sox do lose Holt's versatility, however.
I don't disagree - it's just - what prompted that signing? I am assuming there were some back-channel discussions between the Sox and Brock's camp... and I would think that he wanted more than one year...Peraza has similar versatility, recording defensive innings last season at 2B, SS, 3B, LF, and CF (and 1.1 innings on the mound). I doubt it was back channel discussions at all. I'm sure they talked directly. I know they're not necessarily the most reliable thing, but MLBTR was projecting Holt at 2/$8M early in the off-season so I totally buy the idea that he was seeking multiple years.I don't disagree - it's just - what prompted that signing?
