Some great nicknames there. "THE" Rheal Cormier (that might have been an ESPN one).
"Terrible" Timmy Nehring. That one was probably just in my group at the time. He was wasnt really terrible....but he wasnt really good either.
Hard Hitten Mark Whitten. That one was definitely a ESPN one.
Seems like Troy Oleary was the "Irishman" on here.
Naehring was just killed by injuries. He only had over 500 PA once in his career. He retired after posting .286 / .375 / .467 / .843 OPS / 117 OPS+ his 30 year old season. From ages 26-30 he hit .294 / .379 / .442 / .821 OPS / 110 OPS+.

And ET, although he hates the nickname.

Crazy how times have changed; Vazquez had a 110 OPS+ for the Sox this year, at 282/327/432.

Naehring, IIRC, had one leg shorter than the other, which wasn’t diagnosed until very late and it seemed to contribute to his chronic back issues.

As for Assadorian switching from RF to P, the star pitcher of that 2005 Red Sox team was formerly a failed 1B in the Pirates system.

Wakie’s career was just incredible. I remember reading about Torre being just gutted in the immediate aftermath of the 2004 collapse. He really didn’t like the RS and the way they conducted himself. He was demoralized, but trudged his way into the RS clubhouse for one reason and one reason only. He wanted to shake Wakie’s hand and congratulate him.

What about Mike Spinelli. Didn't he exist?
Ha! The highlight of my high school baseball career. I put down a squeeze bunt against Spinelli to break a tie with them in a game we eventually won (with the bunt being the GWRBI) after they had been rampaging through the GBL. I got a headline in the Boston Globe on page 4, the MLB scoreboard page, at the bottom that said “RG33, Arlington, put squeeze on Revere”. I then got razzed by the Revere bench at the rematch in Revere against him a couple of weeks later we’re they were all barking at me “you gotta bunt you _ _ _ _ “ and I lined an RBI double down the line off him to drive in a run. They beat us handily though in that game. He was nasty — hard-throwing lefty with nasty movement and threw a heavy ball. I was sure he was going to be a pro and was hoping I would have a much better story. Alas. . . .

A good friend of mine is cousins with Asadoorian. Our friends all had dreams of sitting in choice Fenway seats someday, watching his cuz mash. Dreams that were not realized!

I seem to remember Troup and/or Joe Castig calling him "Frenchy"... Did I dream that?

1995 was my first year back in Boston after a year in NYC post-college. I spent many nights at Cityside in Cleveland Circle watching games with friends after work. That Sox team was such an unexpected contender - They overachieved all season long.

No idea if true or not, but seemed like Duquette prioritized picking New England kids for a bit (Asadoorian and Brad Baker?) when there was the all out push to build a new Fenway. Of course those may have been perfectly legit picks, I don’t recall the consensus at the time.
I remember Peter Gammons hyping up Asadoorian, and also Rocco Baldelli (who was gone before the Sox picked).

Ryan Westmoreland and the late Greg Montalbano are two other New England products from roughly this time period.

Westmoreland was a decade after Asadoorian and Greg Montalbano. Different GM and ownership.

Corey Spencer of Lynn, though I think he was an undrafted FA out of Merrimack College, made it as far as Pawtucket '02 as a LH reliever.

Pre-shoulder injury, Naehring was on a great trajectory. OPS+ of 123-103-117 '95-'97. He was no HOF'er but he was a solid player.

No. I believe that he was from Quebec and (probably) spoke French. So no dream.

He only had two seasons where he crossed the 100 game threshold:

Age 28: 4.2 bWAR in 126 games.
Age 29: 3.6 bWAR in 116 games.

When healthy, a very good player. To put that in very rough context, an age 29 Xander has 116 games right now and 4.0 bWAR as a SS.
