I am officially pissed.

Their window is likely closed (it was open last year).
This team lacks the defense to finish games, have blown 2 10 point leads and now lost to a depleted Chiefs offense.

Add to this that they are having real problems in scoring TDs in the Red Zone.

Brock Purdy has to get paid and the Niners have to pay him or go back to the drawing board with little or no cap space.

Not ideal. That was an epic loss yesterday.

Aiyuk ACL confirmed: View: https://twitter.com/CamInman/status/1848458661934272749

If I try to play the optimist through my tears today: If they can beat a struggling cowboys team, and assuming Seattle can’t beat the Bills next week, they’ll head into the bye top of the division with Greenlaw and CMC in theory on their way back after.

Hopefully Jennings can continue to make plays and covers some of Aiyuks abilities and Pearsall gets his legs under him over the last half of the season.

Get in the playoffs however you can and hope for health.

Maybe….

How to post "my Jacob Cowing jersey is in my NFL.com cart but I just can't pull the trigger yet" without posting it.

The good news is that the division is pretty bad, and they're already a half-game up on Seattle. If they can beat Seattle at home in the rematch in a few weeks, something like 10-7 probably gets them into the playoffs with a home game, and maybe they can get healthy by then.

Purdy looks like he's forcing things and trying to do too much. He needs to take more of the easy underneath yards and stop trying to hit home runs on every play.

Also it's hard to imagine the special teams can continue to be this terrible.

I wonder if the 9ers would consider a 5th rounder for Bourne?
I had a similar thought. There had been internet talk that Bourne would be part of the package going the other way in the never-was-gonna-happen Aiyuk deal.

A trade for Bourne seems like a no brainer for Shanahan/Lynch. Bourne would immediately become a top 3 WR for SF, we know he can play in Shanahan’s offense, and he’s got no guaranteed money after this year unless he somehow nabs 800 yards receiving in 10 games. I’m also not sure what other options they have in the trade market that are anywhere near as good of a fit. From the Pats’ perspective, if they can get a 5th rounder for a guy working his way back from an ACL tear who won’t be part of the next good Pats team then that seems like good business.

More 49ers woes:
49ers WR Deebo Samuel has been hospitalized due to pneumonia and fluid in his lungs. There is no timeline for his return.
TE George Kittle has a sprained foot and is considered day to day.

If Deebo is out again and Jennings’ hip isn’t healed, the Niners might have gone from maybe the best 3 receiver team in the NFL to the worst (guess is it will be Conley for deebo, Pearsall for Aiyuk and Cowing for Jennings).

Add possibly losing Kittle to the mix and…. What’s the opposite of the avengers?

They were so (relatively) healthy last year that I could feel this coming a mile away. I guess the division is still in play, but seems like a long shot with the upcoming gauntlet. Even in j-man's post above - that Miami game probably has Tua, not this version of the Dolphins.

This team is going nowhere. Coming off a bye against a Bucs team on short rest and missing its best receivers the niners nearly gave this one away. Special teams remains abhorrent. The defense played better-ish, but still gave up too many yards on the ground and the pass rush is a shell of its former self. The O-line continues to give Purdy little time, Shanahan abandons the run early in games and they are terrible in the red zone. If they make the playoffs they are a first round out. The team is looking very old right now.

I can agree with most of this without thinking they look old.

But yes, the defense is a lot softer than what we are used to seeing from them and their special teams are awful.

I also does not help that Moody comes back and goes right back to missing FGs and thereby giving a great chance to tthe opponent.

And they are horrible in the Red Zone.

They have lost 3 games they could have won, and 2 of them they had in their hands (and were divisional games to boot) and almost gave this one away too,

They sure look old to me. The WRs can't get separation and the defense wears down over the course of the second half. Even in games they've won, they let it get much too close by the end. This team used to come out from halftime and put their foot down, now they hang on. Only the Vikings (27.1 years) and Dolphins (27.3 years) have a higher average player age than the niners (26.9 years).

While I agree, one factor is definitely the halftime adjustments.
Under Saleh and under Ryans this was their trademark. They need to get the defensive coach who can do this.

Looks like this happens after a Niner Super Bowl loss.

After blowing at least 3 games they should have by all rights won and being 5-5 when they could easily be 8-2 they are going to Green Bay without Brock Purdy, without Nock Bosa (Seattle scored 2 TDs after he left and 0 when he was in last week) and Trent Williams is still a question mark.

Luckily, no team is running away with the division but this is infuriating.

let look at the div
Zona @ sea L @ MINN toss up SEA W NE W @ CAR W RAMS TOSS UP SF TOSS UP 9-5-3 Likely 10-7
SEA ZONA W @ NYJ W @ ZONA L GB W MINN L CHI W @RAMS TOSS UP 9-7-1 likely 9-8
RAMS Philly L @ NO W BUFF L @ SF LOSS @ NYJ W ZONA TOSS UP SEA TOSS UP 7-8-2 Likely 8-9
SF @ GB L @ BUFF L CHI W RAMS W @ MIA W DET L @ ZONA TOSS UP 8-8-1

its zona div to lose if they win today or next week its a lock because of NE and CAR all they really have to do is beat sea once and they have 9 wins with 2 weeks left means if they beat the rams before u they have 10 wins
assuming Wash and Minn get to 10 wins too means if GB gets to 10 wins u are cooked just looked at GB sch IF they beat u today they are 8-3 with Miami at home W @ DET L @ SEA L NO W @ MINN L CHI W
unlees u win today and GB loses thur to a Miami team that does not do well in cold weather u have no path to a wc its 3 seed or zip

It hurts but yes, the Niners need to win today and lots of help down the road. It also hurts that they have lost 3 division games (again all winnable).

It really sucks that a Thursday game essentially decides their season. Rams this Thursday.

They are making a lot of noise about re-signing Brock, but I could see them trading Purdy for a bunch of picks and then trading next to nothing for Cousins (if he isn't released) and trying to squeeze one last year out of the Deebo-Kittle-Williams group. Shanny is a big believer in his ability to have anyone run his offense, so they may not want to break the bank for Purdy.

I really do not see that happening. They nearly sent the franchise on a tailspin because they needed their QB in the draft and missed. Now that they "accidentally" hit on their pick with Brock Purdy I think they sign him.

Would someone trade a lot of picks for Purdy? Not so sure. He's about to get expensive. He might net a R2 and something else? Maybe a late R1? I know he's been very good but the aura around Shanahan's offense is such that teams may be weary.

0-3 to 4-3
It's going to be fascinating to see what happens next with Purdy. I'd be very reluctant to give that guy $250M over 5 years, but then again I'm not sure what the alternative is. Gun to my head I think you have to do it.

I don't think the window has closed. I think the team has been injured, they need to upgrade the OL, and they need to add a bunch of mid-tier FAs to the mix.

They can't really beat man coverage like they used to. Aiyuk was so rusty this year and then got hurt. Deebo is tits on a bull vs man. Just utterly useless. (I'll be here all week, thank you thank you). Pearsal is going to be a huge upgrade there vs man when he is fully integrated. He gives them a shot vs the better slot corners who typically smother Deebo like queso on cheese enchiladas.

The defense is a little more concerning to me but they've had even more injuries to the defense. I would bet Purdy takes a Goff/Lawrence/Baker/Tua kind of deal and that's fair market value for him. If he breaks the bank though they are in trouble.

The Athletic looked at their cap situation though and they have a lot of money in 2025 and 2026 even accounting for Purdy.

Am I correct that he has one year remaining on his rookie deal, plus the Niners can franchise him 3 times? I'm sure he would hate that, but I could see them at least considering it if he's looking for 5/$250.

Yes but the number would be astronomical past the first one.
