Like everyone here, I'm pissed about the first round...but there's still a draft, the Pats will be making picks, and it's time to offer an opportunity for bragging rights to a SoSHer, and some dough to a charity. So...here's the contest for 2016.

You get to name 20 players who you think the Pats will/might pick, plus the charity you think is most deserving of a contribution in your (screen) name. If you leave out a charity name, I'll plug in the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber.

Scoring is just like previous years: three points for each player selected by the Pats in the first three rounds - 4 for round 4, 5 for round 5, 6 for round 6, 7 for round 7, and 8 pts for naming UDFAs signed by the Pats within 72 hours of the end of the draft. New this year, 3 bonus points if a player on your list gets picked #29.

Free to enter, and bragging rights for whoever picks best - plus I'll donate $100 to the SoSH charity of choice in the name of whoever wins. In case you've forgotten, ZMart100 displaced Phragle as champ last year.

In the event of a tie, the earliest entry is the winner.

Looking forward to hearing what/who you think the Pats will add through the draft!

2. Reynolds, Keenan- RB
3. Prosise, CJ- RB
4. Carroo, Leonte- WR
5. Shephard, Sterling- WR
6. Cooper, Pharoah- WR
7. McGee, Jake- TE
8. Coleman, Shon- OT
9. Hawkins, Shon- OT
10. Clark, Shon- OT
11. Drango, Spencer- OL
12. Ward, Jihad- DL
13. Tapper, Charles- DL
14. Collins, Maliek- DT
15. Washington, Adolphis- DT
16. Correa, Kamalei- LB
17. Brothers, Kentrell- LB.
18. Cravens, Su'a- DB
19. Fuller, Kendall- DB
20. Simmons, Justin- DB
21. Good-El, Phuk- Ball Boy

Don't read into anything with these picks. I always do awful in this contest. If anything, these are probably names you want to avoid entering. I'm not sure I've ever gotten a pick right although I've got a great feeling about my last pick this year.

Here's my list, broken into 10 offensive and 10 defensive players. The focus is on upside potential, versatility, recent position converts, size, and just plain old binkiness. Not in any particular order:

Offense:
  1. Boehringer, Moritz WR (Germany) < The ultimate lottery ticket. Vollmer needs more friends
  2. Braverman, Daniel WR (Western Michigan) < Hogan & Edelman's love child
  3. Braxton, Miller WR (Ohio State) < So much potential. Could be a ST ace
  4. Cooper, Fahn RT (Ole Miss) < Can spot as a backup LT. Was Tunsil's bookend mate
  5. Krieger-Coble, Henry TE (Iowa) < Got size and decent speed
  6. Reynolds, Keenan QB/WR (Navy) < Jack of all trades. Yes, he's from Navy
  7. Prosises, C.J. RB (Notre Dame) < 1 year of RB = lots of room for growth, less wear and tear
  8. Shepard, Sterling WR (Oklahoma) < Slot receiver for the future
  9. Spriggs, Jason LT (Indiana) < Converted TE. Could be a Solder redux
  10. Vitale, Dan FB/RB/TE (Northwestern) < "Superback" can line up anywhere
Defense:
  1. Burns, Artie CB (Miami) < Speedy corner with high motor. Mature for his age
  2. Jones, Cyrus CB (Alabama) < Great returner adds value to his corner skills
  3. Joseph, Karl S (West Virginia) < Great all around safety. May not last until late 2nd
  4. Kwiatkoski, Nick ILB (West Virginia) < Tackling machine with good football instincts
  5. Ochi, Victor DE (Stony Brook) < Situational edge rusher. Better suited for 3-4
  6. Reader, D.J. NT/DT (Clemson) < Can play 2-gap as a true nose. Knighton replacement in 2017
  7. Ridgeway, Hassan DT (Texas) < Malcolm Brown's teammate with interior rush potential
  8. Smith, Jaylon OLB (Notre Dame) < Old habits die hard. BB goes for another top player without knee ligaments
  9. Weatherly, Stephen OLB (Vanderbilt) < Got enough size & athleticism. To be groomed for 2017
  10. Wright III, Scooby OLB (Arizona) < High-motored converted DL from Arizona? Bruschi anyone?
Total binkies in red. Best fits in blue. I do realize some may not last until #60.

Small quibble, SSF. Scooby Wright ain't no DL convert. He's always been a LB and is too small to play any DE. I think he'll need to play weakside LB in the NFL in order to hide his lack of size. He can get pushed around a bit once an OL gets locked on. Love his instincts and play making ability though.

Still working on mine, but one reaction I have to some of these lists is that while the Patriots have success with smaller, quicker WR like Shepard, Cooper, and Braverman, they tend to draft guys who are more prototypical X receivers. Dobson, Boyce, Taylor Price, and Chad Jackson are all 5'11" at least and ran sub-4.4s, and Brandon Tate (4.52) was probably in that range pre-knee injury. The picks haven't worked out (they're lottery tickets, essentially), but that's who they seem to go for. Branch is the big exception, but he was back in 2002. If they draft a slot type guy, it's more than likely very late (Edelman, Jeremy Ebert, and Jeremy Gallon were all seventh-rounders).

Thanks, Elcab. I swore I saw that he was a converted DL, due to his size. He did, however, play occasional DE spot just as a spot rusher. But this was an admittedly small part of his game.

I do love the fact that he plays his heart out (watch the interview below -- gotta love that) and had super production. Scouts are calling him a "pure" football player, and we know how much BB loves guys who just love the game. Not sure how much ST he played but instinctual linebackers make terrific special teamers, adding to his value.

Shepard could go in round 2, while Braverman really should be a 5th-6th rounder except for the hype train around the guy.

You're right about the picks, but I am looking at that list of receivers and none of those "prototypical" players really worked out, as we all know. If BB was willing to sacrifice a 3rd rounder to grab Sanders as a RFA, perhaps he could get a smaller player (and earlier in the draft) to groom as the next Edelman/Amendola.

Here are some quick comps, in order of small to large:
  • D. Braverman: 5'10" / 177 lb
  • S. Shepard: 5' 10" / 193 lb
  • J. Edelman: 5'10" / 200 lb
  • E. Sanders: 5'11" / 180 lb
  • D. Amendola: 5'11" / 190 lb
  • J. Boyce: 5' 11" / 205 lb
  • P. Cooper: 5' 11" / 208 lb
  • L. Carroo: 6'1" / 211 lb
  • A. Dobson: 6'3" / 200 lb
So Braverman represents the smallest, while Rutgers Carroo the largest among draft prospects.

As a late rounder, someone like OLB Stephen Weatherly checks off a lot of boxes.

Smart kid (grandmother went to Harvard & MIT), showed growth (from a redshirt freshman to team leader in tackles & sacks), and certainly has the size and arm length (6'4", 34.5") that BB seems to look for. Absolutely too raw at this point, but projected 6th rounder, you can't do much worse.

He was willing to spend for Sanders, and Welker, and Amendola. Clearly they value that skill set from veterans, but they seem to prefer drafting X types.

I would love for the Patriots to land Shepard, but I wasn't sure he would make it past the first round let alone to picks in the 60s.
F-&*% you with a rusty hammer, Roger!!!
Part of the difficulty of this particular contest.

Shepard seems to be anywhere from the end of 1st to the end of 2. If there are 4-5 QBs taken in the first round, which is not a completely crazy idea, a slot guy like Shepard could slip. Especially with perhaps a 6-8 DTs going in the first two rounds.

You have convinced me! I have modified my list again. Let's draft Shepard and then trade Danny Amendola for Jamaal Charles.

Truth!

I think I've had at least one right every year since the start of this...

1. Reynolds, Keenan - Everywhere - Navy
This is pretty much a no-brainer, right? The only question is will it be 60 or 61. I mean BB has to reach for someone in the second. Might as well be him.

2. Shepard, Sterling - WR - Oklahoma
I love everything about this kid. He's the type of receiver that would flourish in this system. The write up on ITP is great!

3. Miller, Braxton - WR - Ohio State
One word. ATHLETE. Miller is just impressive with the ball in his hands.

4. Sterup, Zach - OT - Nebraska
6'8" 320 lb monster. Runs a sub 5.00 40. Can play tackle and guard. Would love to see what Scar could do with him.

5. Nembot, Stephane - OT - Colorado
Versatile but raw. CBS compares him to Vollmer. Another no-brainer?

6. Drake, Kenyan - RB - Alabama
Another receiving back? Sure. Why not? Drake is an explosive playmaker.

7. Johnson, Devon - RB - Marshall
6'0' 238 lb former tight end and linebacker. Injury history isn't good but could excel in a limited role here. Physical runner who can catch as well.

8. Caroo. Leonte - WR - Rutgers
Because Rutgers. Actually this kid has talent. A lot of it. May fall because of off the field issues.

9. Cajuste, Devon - WR - Stanford
6'4" 230 lb possession receiver with fantastic hands. Did I mention a 6.49 3-cone? Yeah.

10. Spriggs, Jason - OT - Indiana
Extremely athletic former TE turned tackle. Might not be there at the end of the second though. My favorite tackle prospect this year.

11. Lumpkin, Keith - OT - Rutgers
Technique wise he's pretty raw. Prototypical size and above average athleticism though. Oh, and he went to that school in NJ.

12. Robinson, A'Shawn - DT - Alabama
I know... He's going to be gone way before the Pats are on the clock. I watched some of Bama's pro day on TV and couldn't help but notice BB watching this kid like a hawk. Robinson would be a perfect fit because of his versatility and overall ability. It's a pipe dream though.

13. Ward, Jihad - DE - Illinois
Played mostly inside in college but he has the length to play end. Quick off the ball and agile for his size. 7.38 3-cone.

14. Perry, Joshua - LB - Ohio State
Terrific size and speed. Great coverage ability and non stop motor. Can play inside where I think he'd flourish here even though he's pretty big for the middle. Played ILB for the Buckeyes in 2014.

15. Kaufusi, Bronson - DE - BYU
Son of the d-line coach at BYU. No nepotism needed though. This kid can flat-out play the game. Can play numerous positions in 3-4 or 4-3. Versatile, hard working, coach's son... BB couldn't engineer a better fit.

16. Simmons, Justin - S - BC
Pre-draft visits rarely lead to Pats signings but I think he could be one of the rare few that actually gets drafted. Great ball skills along with above average speed and agility makes him an intriguing prospect. Could play the nickel if asked to as well.

17. Kearse, Jayron - S - Clemson
A physical freak like his uncle Javon. 6'4" and still filling out at 216 lbs. Can play the run and pass equally well. If he can get it together he could be a steal in the mid to later rounds.

18. Burns, Morgan - CB - Kansas State
Known more for his KR skills than his defensive play but can actually play corner well. Decent size (5'10" 200 lbs) for someone with the speed and explosiveness he has. I like him a lot more than Cyrus Jones.

19. Williams, Bryce - TE - East Carolina
Before the Pats went TE crazy I had this kid pegged as a possible addition. Plays like an oversized WR but can lineup anywhere, even in the backfield.

20. McGowan, LaQuan - OL/TE - Baylor
How could you not want a 400 lb offensive weapon?

Slight change in my mock. Looks like ILB Reggie Ragland is going to be a 1st round, early 2nd round pick at the latest.

So I'm swapping out one dreamboat scenario with another in ND's OLB Jaylon Smith. Because old habits die hard and BB rolls the dice on another top prospect without knee ligaments.

I would LOVE to take Jaylon Smith and stash him. I would roll the dice as early as our first 2nd round pick (so, our first pick) just to make sure, but I think we could get him - mayyyybe - with our first 3rd rounder.

This leads to two questions for the group:

1) How early would others be willing to take Jaylon Smith?

2) How LATE do others think we could wait and still land Jaylon Smith?

I don't think Smith will last until the end of round 3, so you're likely looking at using one of the back to back 2nds on him (or trade back into early round 3). With 4 picks in the first 3 rounds, they certainly could use one on him and stash him for a year if BB thinks he can return to his previous form, but that's a pretty big if.

If you can come out of the first 4 picks with RB/WR/OL/DL, you might be able to find guys who can contribute right away at positions of need. It's a tough decision to make. I'd absolutely be fine using one of the 3rds on him. One of the 2nds, I think, is too high. Maybe something like their 2nd 2nd rounder for a 3rd and 5th? Pick up Smith in the 3rd and Bill gets another pick in the middle rounds. I'd be happy with that.

Okay, I'm even further behind on my prep for this than usual (not that it matters, I pretty well finish last every year anyway) - but here goes!

Keenan Reynolds, WR/etc. (Navy)
Germain Ifredi, T (Texas A&M)
Le'Raven Clark, T (Texas Tech)
Halapoullvaati Valtal, T (TCU)
(there's got to be at least one T from Texas, right?)
Willie Beavers, T (Western Michigan)
Joshua Garnett, G (Stanford)
Vadal Alexander, G, LSU)
(I don't want to see Brady buried again this year!)
Ben Braunecker, TE (Harvard)
Jordan Howard, RB (Indiana)
Leonte Caroo, WR (Rutgers)
Sean Davis, CB/S/ST (Maryland)
Xavier Howard, CB (Baylor)
Artie Burns, CB (Miami)
(I think the Pats will look CB early - well, as early as possible. FU, RG.)
D.J. Reader, DT (Clemson)
Chris Jones, DT (Mississippi St)
(Pats are down a C Jones DL - here's a chance to recover!)
Bronson Kaufusi, DE (Brigham Young)
Su'a Cravens, LB (USC)
Quentin Gause, LB (Pawtucket…er, Rutgers)
Elijah Shumate, ST (ND)
Jaylon Smith, LB (Notre Dame)

Well you get more points for the late-round selections. If you had Jeremy Gallon on your list last year you probably won the thing.

Like everyone here, I'm pissed about the first round...but there's still a draft, the Pats will be making picks, and it's time to offer an opportunity for bragging rights to a SoSHer, and some dough to a charity. So...here's the contest for 2016
Hey mwonow,

Would it be easier if we formatted our answers in a certain way? I know something like this take a long time to tally, so let me know if there's anything we can do to make the process easier for you.

Thanks! And yes, there's an easier way (last name first, everything else after that). Though I do like seeing the different ways people approach this - especially the ones who've done some homework and want to add in the reasons why someone should be a Pat (heck, if I didn't think it was poaching, I'd have picked LaQuan McGowan because I'm intrigued by the comment "How could you not want a 400 lb offensive weapon?").

So...I don't want to upset this year's applecart by asking for resubmissions, but thanks for the suggestion, I'll add a standard format (at the beginning of each name, anyway) to next year's entrance request.

I'm working on the theory that Stanford is the new Rutgers, OSU is the new florida, we draft OT/RB fairly high, a QB later and a DB or 2 somewhere, and that we roll the dice on injuries.

Doughty, Brandon WKU QB
Drake, Kenyan Arkansas RB
Hawkins, Jerald LSU OT
Hogan, Kevin Stanford QB
Johnstone, Tyler Oregon OT
Kessler, Cody USC QB

I've re-formatted my picks: alphabetized, put last name first, and crossed out the drafted players.

To everyone who submitted their picks, please take a few minutes to reformat your answers (last name first at minimum). It'll really help out mwonow.

Thanks!

A Scud Away from Hell
After the first 3 rounds

Offense:
  1. Boehringer, Moritz WR (Germany) < The ultimate lottery ticket. Vollmer needs more friends
  2. Braverman, Daniel WR (Western Michigan) < Hogan & Edelman's love child
  3. Braxton, Miller WR (Ohio State) < So much potential. Could be a ST ace
  4. Cooper, Fahn RT (Ole Miss) < Can spot as a backup LT. Was Tunsil's bookend mate
  5. Krieger-Coble, Henry TE (Iowa) < Got size and decent speed
  6. Reynolds, Keenan QB/WR (Navy) < Jack of all trades. Yes, he's from Navy
  7. Prosises, C.J. RB (Notre Dame) < 1 year of RB = lots of room for growth, less wear and tear
  8. Shepard, Sterling WR (Oklahoma) < Slot receiver for the future
  9. Spriggs, Jason LT (Indiana) < Converted TE. Could be a Solder redux
  10. Vitale, Dan FB/RB/TE (Northwestern) < "Superback" can line up anywhere
Defense:
  1. Burns, Artie CB (Miami) < Speedy corner with high motor. Mature for his age
  2. Jones, Cyrus CB (Alabama) < Great returner adds value to his corner skills
  3. Joseph, Karl S (West Virginia) < Great all around safety. May not last until late 2nd
  4. Kwiatkoski, Nick ILB (West Virginia) < Tackling machine with good football instincts
  5. Ochi, Victor DE (Stony Brook) < Situational edge rusher. Better suited for 3-4
  6. Reader, D.J. NT/DT (Clemson) < Can play 2-gap as a true nose. Knighton replacement in 2017
  7. Ridgeway, Hassan DT (Texas) < Malcolm Brown's teammate with interior rush potential
  8. Smith, Jaylon OLB (Notre Dame) < Old habits die hard. BB goes for another top player without knee ligaments
  9. Weatherly, Stephen OLB (Vanderbilt) < Got enough size & athleticism. To be groomed for 2017
  10. Wright III, Scooby OLB (Arizona) < High-motored converted DL from Arizona? Bruschi anyone?
Seven players down. One correct pick. I'll make my $ in day 3.

One correct, one wrong so far. Willie Henry and Eric Murray seem really unlikely though given what has happened.

One more day for UDFA signings, and then let's tote up the scores
