The All New 2018 Pats Draft Contest!

Nine days until the draft, and...I'm feeling a need to demonstrate that I'm out of my depth when I try to 'think along with Bill.' Anyone else feel like prognosticating?

Unlike last year, when the Pats had no 1 or 2, they now (at least as of today) have 2 1s, 2 2s, and a bunch of other picks - meaning that BB can shift pretty well anywhere he pleases, to get the players he wants.

Which players are those? If history is any guide, your guesses will be better than mine...so let's get the contest in gear!

As in years past, here's the contest for 2017.

You get to name 20 players who you think the Pats will/might pick, plus the charity you think is most deserving of a contribution in your (screen) name. If you leave out a charity name, I'll plug in the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber.

Scoring is just like previous years: three points for each player selected by the Pats in the first three rounds - 4 for round 4, 5 for round 5, 6 for round 6, 7 for round 7, and 8 pts for naming UDFAs signed by the Pats within 72 hours of the end of the draft. In an echo of sorts from previous years, 3 bonus points if a player on your list gets picked #219 (or with whatever pick ends up being the last one made by the Pats in the draft.

Free to enter, and bragging rights for whoever picks best - plus I'll donate $100 to the SoSH charity of choice in the name of whoever wins. I'd appreciate it if your entry took the form of last name, first name, position, college; your thoughts on the player are optional, but always appreciated.

In the event of a tie, the earliest entry is the winner.

Looking forward to hearing what/who you think the Pats will add through the draft!

Going to adjust mine based on the work looking at past drafts in the Wait Who forum.

I am going to pick the top 5 positions of the value of the prospects they have visited and 18/20 guys they have either worked out/visited or have coach connections to. Edge, WR, RB, QB, LB.

Landry, Harold, Edge, Boston College (best pass rushing edge)
Hubbard, Sam, Edge, Ohio State (positional flexibility, does lots of things well, potential to develop into a better pass rusher)
Vander Esch, Leighton, LB/Edge (maybe), Boise State (can play multiple LB positions and is athletic. Can cover)
Carter, Lorenzo, LB/Edge, Georgia (positional flexibility and extremely athletic but is raw and needs work as a pass rusher and in coverage. Very high ceiling)
Sweat, Josh, Edge, Florida (raw but athletic edge prospect who could be an elite pass rusher but has play strength concerns. A lot of boom/bust here I think).
Green, Rasheem, Edge, USC (he can kick inside on passing downs and rush - could develop into a more complete player)
Evans, Rashaan, LB, Alabama (athletic linebacker who can do everything)
Jefferson, Malik, LB, Texas Not an interviewed guy buy could be an exception to the rule because of his athleticism (the Jamie Collins type) and versatility at LB
Jewell, Josey, LB, Iowa (Great key and diagnose player. He is of average athleticism but high football IQ)
Sam, Christian, LB, Arizona State (Coming off an injury could be more athletic than his 2017 tape. Solid LB with upside)
Jackson, Lamar QB, Louisville, (he’s my favorite QB for the Pats and my overall favorite player in this draft.) 1st round target
Lauletta, Kyle, QB, Richmond (the safety blanket QB) 2nd round target
White, Mike, QB, Western Kentucky (Adjustment to our scheme would take a bit but better arm than Lauletta) 3rd round target
Quinn, Trey, WR/Slot, SMU, (he has adequate speed and quickness and wins with his route running and ridiculous hands. He hauls in anything within a good radius.)
Berrios, Braxton, WR, Miami (return ability and good in the slot)
St. Brown, Equanimeous, WR, Notre Dame (he’s tall and fast and suffered from poor QB play)
Miller, Anthony, WR, Memphis, great athlete, route runner, YAC ability, but he isn't great when pressed. He was not interviewed but has exceptional athletic ability and might be, like Aaron Dobson, an exception.
Hines, Nyheim, RB, N.C. State (super athletic and fast but will need time to develop. Has ST ability.)
Michel Sony, RB, UGA (All around back who profiles to eventually be a good receiver with great combination of size, speed, and vision. A weapon not just a RB)
Wadley, Akrum, RB, Iowa (Smart Runner, he profiles as a 3-down back eventually)

Some guys counted at 2 positions.
6: Edge
6: LB
4: WR
3: QB
3: RB

Edit: switched my list

Payne, Da’Ron, DT, Alabama (3-down tackle who can rush the passer)
Hurst, Maurice, DT, Michigan (best pass rushing DT in this class and has the production to back it)
Bryan, Taven, DT, Florida (high ceiling pass rushing DT)
Hubbard, Sam, LB/Edge, Ohio State (positional flexibility, does lots of things well, potential to develop into a better pass rusher)
Vander Esch, Leighton, Multiple LB/Edge (maybe), Boise State (can play multiple LB positions and is athletic. Can cover)
Carter, Lorenzo, LB/Edge, Georgia (positional flexibility and extremely athletic but is raw and needs work as a pass rusher and in coverage. Very high ceiling)
Warner, Fred, LB/Nickel/Slot, BYU, athletic nickel or coverage linebacker.
Leonard, Darius, LB, SC State coverage or wlb very athletic.
Avery, Genard, LB, Memphis, same as above, athletic coverage linebacker
Jackson, Lamar QB, Louisville, he’s my favorite QB for the Pats and my overall favorite player in this draft. Lauletta, Kyle, QB, Richmond (the safety blanket QB) Goedert, Dallas, TE, ND State, my TE1 and baby Gronk if we’re being fast and loose with comps.
Gesicki, Mike, TE, Penn State Super Athletic but doesn’t do well against physical corners and doesn’t block well.
Harrison, Ronnie, S, Alabama, he’s great in coverage and around the box but is not a single high guy. Chung possible upgrade in the near future.
Quinn, Trey, WR/Slot, SMU, he has adequate speed and quickness and wins with his route running and ridiculous hands. He hauls in anything within a good radius.
Berrios, Braxton, WR, Miami: return ability and good in the slot
St. Brown, Equanimeous, WR, Notre Dame, he’s tall and fast and suffered from poor QB play
Reid, Justin, S, Stanford, he’s great against most slots and in the box. Intelligent too.
Speaks, Breeland, DT/DE, Ole Miss, could be a decent situational interior pass rusher.
Senat, Deadrin, DT, USF, great against the run. He’s a 2-down guy and someone who can be of use in short yardage and goal line situations. Check out his belly rub sometime.
Thanks, that's a great lead-off post/set of picks!

Explaining my picks:

I could have picked 50 players. This year was certainly night-and-day compared to last year. I would say that the Patriots have two big needs that have to be addressed in the draft in OT and OLB but then they have a lot of medium needs - pretty much across the board (QB, RB, WR, TE, DT, DE, ILB, S, CB). So outside of OT and OLB, I could see the Patriots making tons of trades and picking up players all over the place. But we are limited to 20 picks. So I started with potential players who are not OT or OLB but who may be drafted by the Patriots in the first round. Those players would be Jaire Alexander, Lamar Jackson and Isaiah Wynn. I love Jaire Alexander and want him on the team. With Wynn, he played OT in college but many project him to be undersized to play OT in the NFL. If the Patriots draft him, though, I wouldn't be surprised if they at least give him a shot at Tackle or take advantage of his position flexibility if they suffer injuries along their line. Even if he is a Guard in the NFL, however, I still like him and think he immediately improves the team for next year. Lamar Jackson I don't necessarily love nor do I want to trade up for, but he is intriguing and I would hate to see him land on the Bills. I think with two years of practice behind Brady, he could be the next great Patriots QB.

I kind of group the Tackles and Guards together as offensive lineman. I feel like Brady took a ton of hits last year and then we lost Solder. Plus, Mason is a free agent after this year. So, short term and long term, we need help on the line. This year's draft is projected to be pretty weak at Tackle but strong at Guard but I'll take any help we can get. I tried to identify second & third round options for OT even though I think it is perhaps our biggest need. I wouldn't be surprised if we drafted two offensive linemen.

For linebacker, I grouped outside linebacker and inside linebackers as one group and then tried to scatter-shot across the rounds. Obviously at the top are Vander Esch and Evans. I would be happy with either at 23. I think one of those players plus a healthy Hightower does a lot to fix our defense. As with the offensive linemen, I wouldn't be surprised if we drafted two linebackers. I think there are a lot of intriguing names in the later rounds.

Pettis was included as a young receiver who runs good routes and could make an immediate impact on this year's team with his punt return abilities.

You shouldn't. Just because he'll play next season doesn't mean they should avoid taking a potential successor.
Are you predicting any TE picks? There's still some time before the draft!

Speaking of time, the draft starts tomorrow, so let's please cut off entries at 11:59 tonight! Once the clock strikes 12, we're on to the picks.

Man I missed Dylan Cantrell running a 4.44 40 at his Pro Day. Best WR 3-cone, a program they've had success with (Texas Tech - Welker and 'Dola), a guy who will likely only cost a day three pick, seems like a no-brainer fit.

Cantrell is interesting, but he didn't make it on to my list. I love the way he blocks too.

I really think the Pats pick up a WR, especially considering all the WR visits, but I couldn't nail down a great fit outside of Cantrell. I felt the same about RB, but there are lots of guys there I can see the Pats targeting.

RB is fascinating. They've traditionally had a big early down / 3rd down split but last year Lewis and Burkhead could both do everything. With Lewis gone, do they try to replace that or go back to what they had been doing? I think it makes sense to try to get a do-everything RB because those seem to be easier to find than do-everything TE nowadays; maybe they shift to do-everything RBs and specialized TEs. But how high will they go? Almost nothing would shock me, from using a first on a guy like Guice to double-dipping mid-rounds to ignoring the position entirely.

This deserves partial credit.

Final picks were made this Monday... I have Michel, 3, Sam, 6, and Berrios, 6 for 15. Wadley apparently signed with Tennessee so I am done.

So - I found this list of UDFAs in the Globe. Anyone have any different names?
  • John Atkins, DT, Georgia
  • Corey Bojorquez, P (left foot, natch), New Mexico
  • Trent Harris, DT, LSU
  • Frank Herron, DT, LS
  • J.C. Jackson, CB, MarylandU
  • Chris Lacy, WR, Oklahoma State
  • Ralph Webb, RB, Vanderbilt
  • Shane Wimann, TE, Northern Illinois
None of these folks appeared in any of the draft predictions. Neither did actual draft picks Duke Dawson (second round - ugh), or any of the seventh rounders, Etling, Crossen or Izzo.

This year's winner, with 15 points - 3 for Sony Michel, 6 for Braxton Berrios and 6 for Christian Sam - is SMU Sox - congratulations! Second, with 11, is Steve's Big Apple (5 for Ja'whun Bentley, 6 for Sam). Nobody else got above 6. Eleven of 19 got 0 - including, er. me.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

Thanks. I donated $100 today to cover everything on my end for the bets I had out for the draft. That was fun. Next year I’ll come up with more prop bets in advance.
