Well fought but you can't win if you give up 41 points.

The 3rd down conversions were killers. The completely shitty call on the out-of-bounds call another.

But at the end of the day, Eagles went for it on 4th and 1 that basically sealed the game.

I am disappointed but Foles just played a hell of a game.

Defense...

On the bright side, this game doesn't do anything to tarnish Brady's legacy. He played his ass off

The defense outside of Gilmore. BB is going to get roasted for not playing Butler.

Belichick and Patricia. Defense totally unprepared, Doug Pederson outcoached the pants off them in key spots. Also pretty much everyone playing on defense.

Gostkowski and Cardona failures loomed large as well. That's a different game if they only need a FG late.

See ya Matt-they've won two titles in spite of him. Also BB if he sat Butler for something minor. But you live by BB, you die by BB.

Butler was perplexing.

But hard to assign single thing. The Patriots defense had basically zero stops. I'm not sure how you win a game doing that

Not to be the turd in the punchbowl here but they lost by 8.. the 4 points from the missed XP and the botched FG attempt still puts them down 4 and needing a TD at the end. Not saying the failures weren't bad though.

The defense, as others have said. 41 points. Nuff said.

The placekicking unit.

And refball. Both those catches were no-doubt TDs 15 years ago, but that “juggle visible on HDTV” has consistently been called no catch this season. (I thought the second controversial one was correctly called.) Now that the “catch rule” has blown up on the game’s biggest stage, maybe we’ll get a fix.

The defense lost this game. Losing Patricia and McDaniels will probably end up being a net positive for this franchise.

Brutal to lose both TD reviews. I thought first was ok and second was BS, but to lose both was tough.
The second was obviously a touchdown, he took two steps and became a runner then was tripped by McCourty. At that point the ground can't cause a fumble.

I'm surprised the first one stood, I thought that was going to get reversed.

we've seen coaching overcome talent issues on the defensive side of the ball. that just didn't translate tonight at all.

when your defense counted on old guys like Harrison (and David Harris carried on the roster). Weakness in the defense reared up at the worst time possible.

Same here. That ball was moving on the first one. Can't believe that wasn't overturned.

The Eagles outplayed the Pats.

We knew they would be aggressive on 4th down, Pederson made some ballsy calls, and his team executed.

I think both were called correctly. Ertz took two full steps before lunging to end zone. Play is dead when he crossed the goal line. It's close, but right call.

The other one I agree was disputable. I think his second foot was out of bounds by the time he had full control, but it was really close, and I am ok with it being called the way it was.

In the simulacrum
Bill Belichick for benching Butler.
Butler for whatever.
Patricia for not having a play that could stop anything.
Brady for not making a catch (I am joking on this one).
Ghost for missing kicks that burned them.
All the D for not making plays, Jesus.

Between here and everywhere.
If Brady catches that ball, he’s virtually untouched into the end zone for a touchdown.

I’m not blaming Brady - but that’s a play I’ll see in my sleep as a “the whole game could have gone diffferently” moment.

The second TD was obviously legit. He was a runner at that point. I can’t believe this is even in question.

The first one, I thought that was coming back. Oh well.

+1.

The defense was so pathetic that I feel less badly than I otherwise would.

The players are responsible, of course — can someone tackle, please — but the prime failure lies at the General Manager level: and I don’t mean Caserio, I mean Belichick. With few exceptions, they have JAGs and certainly no impact players in the front seven. It has been evident all year and it caught up to them. Stats lie when they fail to account for the opposition, and the supposed massive improvement after game 4 was illusory.

Something needs to be done.

The pass was thrown too high, 1 foot lower and he'd have caught it.

I could be wrong but even if he caught it, it looked like he had 20 plus yards to run.
I think a defender catches him.

Glad you’re back to your pre-2014 narrative. Let me guess...Ozzie would have done better?

They’ve been to three SB’s in 4 years, winning two. Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit Felger take.

It was a pass perfectly thrown for a receiver but for Tom it was too high.
Brady wasn't scoring a touchdown on that play but it would have gone for 20-25 yards which would have been huge.

Whoever chose to not line Gilmore up one on one vs. Jeffrey from the jump. Every catch over Rowe, I couldn’t help but yell “where’s Gilmore?!”

That kinda stuff happens when a non-quarterback has to throw to a non-receiver.

Is it a coincidence that the last three times the Pats have given up 40+ points, it's been to Reid / Pederson, Reid, and Pederson? The talent is a problem but it seems like Reid / Pederson have figured something out and have Belichick and Patricia's number.

A bit of a quibble regarding your first point, but I'm on the same page about the first TD, that was surprising.

My goat nominee is McCourty, who (uncharacteristically) missed a number of key tackles, was out of position on a lot of plays, and just seemed to be more bystander than enforcer out there.

It'd be cruel to call him a goat after the season he had, but Shaq Mason got beat, with nearly the worst result possible, on the highest-leverage play of the game.

Needless to say, they really, really missed Hightower tonight. Trey Flowers, for example, isn’t double teamed with a healthy DH in the mix

I'm going to miss Matt and don't pin this on him specifically, but the D. Missed tackles, broken tackles, a seemingly absurd number of 3rd down conversions given up. Just....fuck.

Can't someone take the position that a) Belichick is a great GM and there's no one we'd rather have running the team and b) the defensive talent is unacceptably bad, costing them the SB this year, and ultimately that lies at Belichick's feet?
