I never really thought of that. Imagine if your life turned out in a way that you took the time to write to anyone about the disappearance of Mustard and Johnson from your airwaves? How can you fight back against something like that?
Holy shit, this made me laugh harder than I have all week.

When you guys were discussing what podcasters could viably have a radio show in Boston, I was going to raise FitzyGFY as a guy who might be able to do it if given a co-host. But I know he's made appearances on Hill's show in the past, so I figured if he hadn't moved the needle, maybe my idea was a bad one.

They let him handle a line of questioning to Brady this week and what do you know, someone with a fresh perspective who really cares about sports got Brady to engage in a fun discussion.

Fitzy is horrible on the radio, he was on the afternoons at WAAF and was brutal and got fired. So now WEEI hires him for the mornings. He makes obvious points and tries way too hard to be funny but isn’t. He was good in his scripted videos and does script some jokes on the radio, but off the cuff he is the worst radio personality I have ever listened to. I think he’d be better on a podcast as he can script it and re-record something that didn’t work.

I think Fitzy has that comedian thing were they make literally everything that comes of their mouth some form of a joke. It never works and it's tiresome. When you see an opportunity for humor go grab it, but the rest of the time just engage.

I'll take Fitzy over Minihane, Callahan, Curtis, Mutnansky, and the rest of the jackholes WEEI has been trotting out for the past 4 years. At least he actually likes sports and watches the games. I'd rather get kicked in the nuts than listen to Adam Jones.

There's no one on the Big Jab. It's worse than WEEI.

edit: To be fair, I haven't listened to the Big Jab in close to 2 years. I doubt it's any better.
I think the afternoon show is pretty good: Javs and Danks do the work, get good guests, know way more than I do about the NFL and College Football, and are relatively entertaining. But they take a LOT of calls. I think Maine's caller base is a lot less personality heavy than Boston's. They don't even use a screener and it mostly works out pretty well.

But I agree especially with JMOH that they should try something completely different - something urban, Celtics-Pats focused, and heavy on the social media tie-ins that AREN'T Twitter. The Insta, TikTok, Snap audiences are completely different, sillier and more playful, and way less filled with man-yelling-at-clouds invective.

Chasing the ghost of Glenn Ordway isn't going to get them anywhere.

Accession of nut-kickings would be preferable. Some people make it easy to know just who is and who is not haunted by the daemon of self-loathing. One is moved to feel bad for them, given that’s what they tote around and are fronted with, internally, constantly. But then you’re hit by the latest barrage of rancor. Not criticism. Acidulous, sad rancor. Unmitigated rancor.

Are people who are really into Insta going to figure out how to get terrestial radio on their iphone, and are they interested in doing it? That, to me is the issue with embracing social media on old school platforms.

which is why 98.5 is doing Twitch for T&R and they’re going to start broadcasting the Fantasty Football Show on Sunday’s and taking all their questions from Twitch. At least they’re trying
And think about this stuff.
Meanwhile I turned on Mustard and Johnson today and they were talking about how they don’t want black people with lyrics they can’t understand on the SB half time show.

Bill Simmons isn't walking through that door.

SiriusXM for a while replayed The Vertical podcasts, but it was mostly Yahoo trying to get more listeners.

I think WBUR does broadcast some of their locally produced podcasts on weekends.

Mustard and Johnson is seriously still a thing?? Man I used to turn the channel every weekend when they'd be starting and that was 13 years ago. EEI is just awful if that's really the best they can do.

That's a bummer about Fitzy. Nice that they gave him a try, though.

Listening to Brady's interview, he seems to enjoy talking to Greg and Danielle than Kirk and Gerry.
It was the first Brady interview I've heard in years, other than clips/highlights, and he did seem to be pretty amiable. Though I wonder if the occasion had something to do with it as well. No one is going to get confrontational or "hard hitting" or be in a sour mood when the theme of the day is raising money to help kids with cancer.

Last week's was amicable as well.

Is Wiggy a permanent part of the show? He's become immediate channel change for me. He just doesn't shut up.

I don't understand how Chris Curtis and Ken Laird have what seems to be prominant roles on the show. When I flip over (usually during 98.5 commercials) they are an immediate channel change for me. Brutal.

I'll take Chris, Ken, and Wiggy over Greg, Danielle, and Fitsy any day of the week. Fitsy is especially awful. I can only pray that Wiggy is a permanent replacement.

Agree. The whole show has been awful. I'm hoping they get their bearings and figure things out because this has not been a good start. Greg Hill is clearly uncomfortable doing a sports show and it seems like Danielle is a total fish out of water in it.

As someone who never listened to the Hillman, was he always so boring and monotone? He's more suited to host the Boston Sunday Review than a morning drive time show.

He was always the facilitator. He always had a strong supporting staff and his job was to keep the show moving. And now... not so much.

Exactly. The strength of Hill's show on AAF was always the characters around him. LB, Hsu, and Danielle all complimented each other well. Going further back, Spaz was a moron but brought something to the table anyway. Back even further, the backbone of the show was Kevin Barbare and his impressions. Hill is not much of anything on his own.

Doesn't seem to be failing though. Chris said today that for Sept they were 2nd in ratings. Whether they can sustain that who knows but for the time being they seem to have found some kind of audience.

It's the same audience that Callahan already had. Listened one day this week and it was the hosts and callers bitching about illegal immigrants, and this wasn't uncharted territory for them since they started. What was the point of letting go of Callahan if this was what the show was going to be? If you insist on airing "pissed off, middle aged, New England, conservative white guy" political radio on a sports talk radio station, why not keep the preeminent expert in hosting that kind of show when you have them under contract?

I think Chris was talking only about Sept ratings not for the Summer. Will be interesting to see the Fall book when it's done and if they can sustain that.

2 Reasons. Hill works cheaper than Callahan and removing Callahan from EEI got Bob Murchison and Shirley Leung from the Globe to stop calling and emailing EEI's advertisers.

I enjoy Hillman and Danielle probably more than most here, but does WEEI really think that Wiggins is good on the radio? He's awful. He doesn't ever stop talking.

It took T&R a while to figure themselves out when they switched to sports, so I'm happy to give this show some time to find its bearings too. But enough of Jermaine Wiggins.

On this morning's show, Wiggy didn't know what the word "cosmonaut" means. Even after being told it's a Russian astronaut, it still didn't spark anything. He has his moments when he's knowledgeable about the NFL or social issues, but he too often comes off as a dunderhead.

I like that it's been almost a year between posts about this show, and the only thing of note that gets the thread bumped is that Wiggy is still an idiot.

Jermaine Wiggins doesn't think Magic Johnson ever had HIV because he hasn't died of AIDS. I wouldn't listen to him on any topic, and that includes sports.
I take offense to this. How else would I know the secret to finding a good chicken parm sandwich is to find a place that makes a good chicken parm sandwich?

I find this show to be really strange in the sense that it weaves political overtones into topics that range from sort of sports-related to those which are clearly designed to elicit political opinions. I can't listen for sustained periods of time because the talk veers off to opinions I dislike (right-wing.). As far as Wiggy is concerned, I think sometimes his persona is contrived and other times it's just genuinely out there. I find him most interesting when he speaks about growing up as a black guy in America and around here. Then he goes off on a "Pandering Man" tangent and I can't change the station quickly enough.

is it an attempt to bolster d&k's pathetic ratings? or did someone think that having essentially six full time cohosts in the morning was too much? (danielle, fitzy, greg, wiggins, and the two producers who talk often)

assuming he has a contract, does fitzy take a pay cut going down to three days a week now?

Given Greg HIll's penchant for having a clown car full of people on his shows when he was on WAAF so he could do the least amount of work possible, I can't imagine he's too thrilled that his struggling show is losing someone else who is more interesting than he is.

I haven't listened to any radio since I stopped having a commute in March. Has this show figured out what it is yet? It was flailing.

Interesting point, hadn't realized it but yeah whenever I've listened it's a bunch of people talking and every now and then GH "yeah good point, alright let's go to Joe in Melrose". Assuming Hill makes a high dollar contract not really seeing what the value is there.

Greg is only entertaining when he gets fired up about something, which only happens when it offends his white conservative pseudo-Christian sensibilities... and isn't a scantily-clad single mom stripping for a living or otherwise willing to show skin in the studio.
