The half-time show

I'm not familiar with Katy Perry's music and have my misgivings about her singing ability, but I must say I enjoyed the half-time show.  All the costume changes and the variety of the music made it quite entertaining.  Anyone have any more insightful comments on this show?  Was it in the top half of Superbowl shows?  I'd say it was far better than trotting out yet another guy in his 60s to sing songs that were popular 40 years ago.

It was entertaining piffle.

Ergo, it was a perfectly fine halftime show.

Lenny Kravitz was dumb, though.

Has anyone garnered more celebrity and respect from one song and one cover than Lenny Kravitz?  Seems like a cool guy, snazzy dresser and a decent guitarist, but damn.

His success is probably based on 25% talent and 75% image.

No, but apparently left shark was the root of her feud with Katy Perry.

Not familiar with Are You Gonna Go My Way? Sold a few million copies of that one.

I'm not sure who said "You know what we need for this show? Lenny Kravitz!" and thought it was necessary.

What a stupid feud.  They should just make out.

Did Tay dress up as Left Shark?

Either Katy Perry actually improved her live singing or the sound people did great work, but KP sounded much better than when I heard her sing live back in '09.  I personally would have preferred Coldplay though.

Missy Elliott was random, but she kind of outperformed KP, and she got more stage time than the advertised guest (Lenny Kravitz).

Gotta say, my first impression of Kravitz's presence was the NFL wanting to take the risque (read: homosexual) overtones out of "I Kissed a Girl".  Someone unfamiliar with either artist might have guessed it was his song rather than hers.  Then Missy Elliott came out and performed "Get Ur Freak On" and well, my "trying to tone it down for middle America" theory was dead in the water.

Katy Perry is a mediocre singing talent...she's not going to belt out Broadway tunes like Adele Dazeem...but her songs are catchy and she puts on a hell of a fun show.

Yeah, that was the one song other than his cover of American Woman.  I know he had that Fly Away song, but it's probably elevator music in the fourth circle of Hell, so even if it sold well, I don't count it.  I'm sure there are plenty of other acts who've sold more of a single than Are You Gonna Go My Way, which is a generic rock In Living Color rip off, anyways and those artists aren't playing Super Bowls 15 years later.

Katy has to get in line behind Karlie Kloss.

Ha, look at all those K's.

If you asked a lame person to design a cool person, they'd come up with Lenny Kravitz.

His leather pants game is on point though; you must appreciate that at least.  He's probably a leather ph.d, too.  Or are you a doctor of medicine?

The HT show is to interest all of the people at SB parties who do not care about the game.

I didn't love it. It was kind of meh to me but then again, I was pretty irritated at that moment. I was looking forward to maybe seeing an interesting outfit or two but was disappointed by that. I guess I'd give it a 4 out of 10.

I thought it was a fannnntastic show.  It was hysterically funny, and when has a SB halftime show ever been funny (on purpose)?

Riding in on a 30 foot lion?  Singing 'I kissed a girl' with Lenny Kravitz?  Dancing and singing sharks?!  Missy Elliot?!?!  Soaring over the crowd to 'Firework' on the "The More You Know" star?!?!?!

It was brilliant.

I did like the trippy imagery she lifted from the This Is How We Do video, which is an awesome song and spot as well.

I don't think she was singing live.

Still it was a fantastically weird show.

I believe parts were live and parts pre-recorded.  A woman at the party I was at said that Perry had admitted in an interview that there were parts of the show she couldn't do and sing live. I assume that was the lion entrance and the rocket ride to 'Firework'.  There were some parts when she was Earth-bound when she clearly was singing live.

My wife thought it was the best SB halftime shows she's seen.  Think I annoyed her at the start by pointing out that KP was singing "Eye of the Tiger" riding a lion.

too much of a medley feel.

I would have preferred longer chorii, as in the recorded version,  no Lenny, no Misdemeanor, and more boobage (especially since Get Your Freak On was done, as astutely noted above)

I also wish that that the tiger looked less like a lion.

And also, why wasn't she wearing jeans during Teenage Dream? Very upset by this.  Jeans and a halter would have been perfect for that, instead we got some lame Austin Powersy sundress frock thingy

That very well could be, and I didn't mean to imply anything wrong with the performance or anything. I remember after last year's show where Flea responded to the criticism that they were obviously not playing live by saying they were required to do everything pre-recorded.

So let's just say that I'm willing to believe that the NFL, in an attempt to avoid another halftime show kefuffle, would do everything in their power to have control over what goes on. Including making sure the singing isn't live to avoid any "excited utterances". :)

That attire would have been great for the Super Bowl, except it would have demonstrated too much partiality toward the team everyone was rooting against.

Yes no way she was singing the high notes on "Firework" live - they were clearly Autotuned.  Too straight (no vib) and perfect pitch

on NYE 2009, she was singing live on NBC outside Rockerfeller Plaza...she was terrible...and was dancing a lot like Left Shark

I stumbled across some tribute show for the Beatles.  She sang a slow melody -- maybe it was "Yesterday", I'm not sure.  Anyway, she was truly awful.  I mean wretched, could not hold a note or carry a tune.  It was embarrassing for Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to have to sit there and applaud politely.

The song is called "Roar" and the lyrics mention both a lion and a tiger.

I enjoyed Katy Perry's impression of the "The More You Know" logo. I especially enjoyed how it seemed like they had half-assed that part of the show, and that she might catch fire or fall to her death. That's more entertainment than I get from a typical Super Bowl halftime show.

If you watched with the women I watched with, you wouldn't be wondering about this. He was the perfect choice to perform alongside a headliner who would struggle to get lounge acts if she had average looks.

Consensus among our viewing group (mixed-gender 27-44 year olds) was that it was the best halftime show ever, though nobody was all that into the music (Missy Elliot excepted).

You can Autotune live (I think a lot of this show was prerecorded, though).

I thought the giant cat was an interesting concept to do live.

The harlem shake horsehead dancers were amusing.

The sharks were amusing.

There was a solid minute of "wow she looks dorky and white trying to dance with Missy Eliot's group".

Then I had a good laugh at the wiimote lanyard on the mic for the more you know flying bit.

Overall solid show, on a scale of Janet Jackson's nipple to Bruce Springsteen's crotch slide I'd rate it three chili peppers.
