He's been my draft binky for a few months now. I hope Danny gets a chance to take him.

Trying to think of a good comp for him. He's a little Iguodala meets Kawhi meets Winslow but with a little more explosion.

A quicker Scotty Pippen came to mind, or a gigantic Terry Rozier. If there is such a thing as quick twitch, Jackson has it.

That's a funky release off the dribble for the three-pointer... but it went in.

The knock on Jackson initially was his shooting, in particular his 3 point shooting. But over the past few months he has improved dramatically in that area.

I would not object to Ainge taking Jackson at the number one spot, much as I love Fultz.

Love to hear the praise! As a huge Celtics fan who has effectively zero interest in college ball, I rely on the second hand info. I also think our guards are the strength of the team so the more I read about non pgs rising the happier I get.

Jackson has alligator arm syndrome (pretty certain Fultz has greater length) that doesn't show up in the college game but he offsets that with a KG-like intensity. I like the players approach but I don't like his fit with the Celtics as Jaylen is set to take over for Crowder at the 3 within the next 18 months. Where would that leave Jackson? His skillset screams 4 but he's very short with little wingspan to be elite at that position. Ball and Jackson could be the two best players out of this draft but are the worst fits for us........Ainge has some big decisions to make this summer and if the choice is a bad 19-year old fit and a present day All-Star he may choose to make the trade. This is a big turning point for the franchise.

Josh Jackson is really a thing? Dude looks like a Kent Bazemore type.
I'm a Bazemore fan, I went to ODU.

Here are Bazemore's freshman stats, in the CAA: 4.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg, shooting 42.9% from the FT line
Here are Jackson's freshman stats AT KANSAS: 16.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg

Yeah, I'm kind of with you HRB. The only thing I could see is that they use one of Crowder or Jaylen in a deal if an All-Star-type became available in the offseason. If Danny thinks Jackson can be better than Jaylen, he could include Jaylen in a deal for someone like Butler if he were to become available. I suppose the same thing could be said about our guards if we were to draft Fultz or Ball, but it would give Danny a lot of options on the trade market.

If the Celtics get ping pong luck I can't see taking Jackson over Fultz. Jackson is probably a higher floor than Fultz but the Celtics have plenty of high floor already. They need to break the ceiling to take the next step.

That said, I'm down with the idea of getting super excited about Jackson and Tatum so that the ping pong balls don't feel so annoying.

If the Trade was for Butler, and the prevailing wisdom was that Jackson > Jaylen, then why wouldnt Chicago ask for the Pick + as opposed to Jaylen +?

I think the top three is all very talented but it's Fultz gap Jackson gap Ball gap (and I could be tlaked around on Ball having a gap above tatum smith tier) Tatum Smith (though I need to watch more tape on him as i soured a bit but I think it's almost entirely from low information noise).
After that I think it's far more open to views and fit. EG Monk could be next for some teams, Isaac for others.

When I watch Jackson, at least offensively, I just see Jeff Green. Some moves, some athleticism, but none of it good enough to make up a truly above average offensive wing in the NBA.

Jackson would have the same position that Brown currently has now and would be able to play some two so that hedges against Bradley or Smart leaving / not being resigned / being traded.

One interesting thing to me about Jackson is how different people describe his athleticism. From what I've seen, he seems to be a different type of athlete than Jaylen or Gerald Green (when he was younger); et al. While he's not as powerful, he seems more sudden - particularly off his feet - than Jaylen. I think some people look at him and say that he's not top-tier athletically while others think he's as athletic as anyone.

Given that Jackson is 20 pounds lighter than Jaylen (and 30 pounds lighter than Jeff Green), he's going to have to guard some 2s to be successful. How well he moves his feet in his workouts is going to be a big indicator of where he gets drafted I would think.

Him and Smart together would make for a pretty intense team.

I'm not that high on Jackson. People seem convinced he'll be able to hit the 3 in the pros but his sample size in college is 88. Given his struggles at the line, I worry about his outside shot and if it holds up under a larger sample. He is 25/50 from 3, prior he was 9/38. Is he on a heater or is his true talent level around .380? If he struggles from 3, he and Smart aren't the great of pairings and his FT shooting will cause problems the last 2 minutes of a game.

I think Jackson fits just fine. You don't need a true PG, SG, SF, PF, C lineup. That's bad thinking. It's fine to play with a PG, 2 wings, and 2 bigs. If you can put players on the court that have size, are athletic, skilled, can defend, and know how to play, that's what you do. It makes it harder for other team to match up and allows you to match up easily when defense breaks down in transition, on screens or on penetration.

Also, these draft picks are not for current fit. They likely won't be good enough while IT, Horford, and AB are here or in their prime. Plus at least one of Bradley, Smart, Crowder will be gone in a couple years. Even if you were drafting with the idea Jackson was good enough in first 2 years, a backcourt of IT, Brown, and Jackson is a tough guard.

The FT%, shooting form, and length/wing span are all a valid concerns. But the potential is through the roof. I wouldn't compare him to Jeff Green at all. The college numbers look the same, but that's a poor way to label someone. Green defers and coasts, that's not how Jackson plays

It's a tough choice between Jackson and Fultz. We don't have access to their work ethic and it's its difficult to truly measure their competitiveness from afar. But from a distant view, I go JJ based on size, athleticism, and potential. DA will figure it out.

You don't need a true lineup but having both of your backcourt players shooting <.330 from 3 is going to cause as much nightmares for the Celtics offense as it does opposing defenses.

Yes, you're right. But why would you assume that at this point? JB is at 33% as a 20 year old rookie and his shot looks good. He's clearly been working at it.

I was referring to Marcus Smart. You wouldn't be able to play the two together if Jackson is mediocre from 3. Spacing would be a huge problem.

You are right on your other points though. I'm punishing Jackson for Marcus Smart's shortcomings. Marcus is odd too. He went from .333 on 4 attempts a game to .253 and .284 on the same amount of attempts. Career of .292.

I'd probably have him #2 behind Fultz. His shot could be a concern, but I think he'll be able to create off the dribble more than Kansas really lets him show, his first step is quick for his size, I also think he can post 3s and stretch 4s given time. His defensive tools look elite, and I don't think I worry much about team fit at this point. He and Brown can play 2/3 or 3/4 together in my mind if it comes to that.
Part of this is because I see many similar problems if not more so with Ball, I don't think he's an elite shooter (just a mediocre to solid one he has some similar FT concerns too) I think he'll never create his own shot off the dribble, I don't think he'll be the defender Jackson will, and to be honest I don't get his fit being all that great at the 2 (though I know some do).

If Ball was exposed last night, then Jackson is being exposed tonight. At least so far. 0 points, 4 boards, 16 minutes left.

He finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists...plus some impressive defense. But, yeah, he started really slow and did not make a difference in the game.

So, Ball is gone. Jackson is gone. Fultz is history. Tatum, we hardly knew you.

Are Fox and Monk the only ones of the possible top picks still going?

Tatum didn't even get to the sweet 16. Saw your edit, sorry for the pile on.

Jordan Bell.

(I'm kidding, but he helped his stock tonight. Certainly already some fans in the draft world, but was still generally considered a second rounder)

Small sample sizes are cool in basketball then?
Uh, no?

But if you're referring to your Monk comments in other thread and comparing one game to an apparent improvement over the last month, then, well okay.

No one here really thinks much should change based on tonight or Ball's struggles the day before.

If ever there were a place to pay attention to small sample sizes, evaluating one-and-dones who will match up against future NBA talent only a couple times in that one season seems like the time for it.

I actually thought Jackson looked pretty good in the second half, even as the rest of the team was out of sorts. He competed hard, and was making plays at both ends. Ball, who I've been a fan of, did nothing of the sort in his last half.
