Yeah poor Williams was dead.

the problem with Shaw is he’s been so good this year but you can never count on him to be healthy. I’m not sure what theyll do with that position but I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought in a left back.

I thought United played really well and were unlucky not to put the match to bed in that early second half flurry. Martial alone could have had a hat trick within like 10 minutes.

I don't know what is happening with the Sancho thing but Woodward needs to buy Ole some more attacking options that are at least serviceable. The dropoff is was too high right now between their starters and their bench. The attacking players were completely gassed but Ole clearly didn't want to sub because even a gassed Rashford/Greenwood/Martial/Bruno is better than their bench options.

Shaw puts them in a tough spot. He’s definitely good enough but it’s safe to say he’s injury prone. Maybe Williams showing he’s capable gives them the belief they can platoon enough to limit Shaw’s minutes.

Maybe Pep will bid on Shaw. Although he’s probably saving everything for a world record fee for A. Davies.

Bah gawd, that's Jesse Lingard's music!

More seriously I agree. The best option is to shift the formation to get Bissaka up on the wing and shift Martial and Rashford left a bit to make space. But that requires a shift in the shape and I don't know if United is well-drilled enough yet to pull that off without everything falling apart. Also not really a good option when Ocampos is the main threat of the opposition and is doing everything he can to get behind Bissaka.

Who to root for today? I don't care much about the Serie A but to the extent I do I kind of pull for Rossoneri, but not really strongly enough to hate Inter. When I have nothing to base a rooting interest on, sometimes I'll go with the country that was on the Allies' side in WW2. So, I guess go Shahktar Doetsk? I'm not much up to speed on Ukrainian football.

I usually root for the underdog but Shakhtar owner Rinat Akhmetov is a bad guy, a quintessential Ukrainian gangster-oligarch with all sorts of shady ties to Russia (and actually connected for a long time to Paul Manafort as well). He makes Roman Abramovich look like an upstanding citizen.

Good enough. Let's go Inter!

I turned this match on at 60' at 1-0. Suffice to say I've gotten my 25 minutes' worth.

Inter is really fun to watch. The final is going to be fantastic. I'm blocking my Friday calendar.

It's hard to throw stones because whatever league you follow there will be some awful fanbases and even more awful owners, but boy — there's not exactly a lot of lovable clubs in Eastern Europe.

Seems like they value that Friday night time slot more than Saturday night given they put the biggest CL quarterfinal on Friday too (Bayern/Barca).

Oh I agree with that, I'm curious as to the thinking and data behind it though. Anyways, BUMP! for today's match.

It should be very fun, with Sevilla's possession game, excellent young CBs, wily veterans (Banega, Navas), and in-form players (Ocampos, Reguillon, Suso, etc.) on display against Conte's Inter led by Lukaku, Lautaro, and featuring very solid players pretty much everywhere on the pitch. Lots of quality everywhere--both teams capable of top class shithousery as well, Conte's histrionics and gesticulations and Lope's crazy nervous tics should make for a lively sideline.

From a tactics perspective, this is should be interesting. Sevilla have excellent skill on the ball everywhere and are vice-like with how they possess and create chances high up the pitch. Inter feature a crowded MF where they should have numerical superiority. While this may be a battle in the central MF, when we get to the other 2/3 of the pitch, the differences are equally as stark.

Sevilla will try to overwhelm the wings as Navas pushes up very high and combines with Suso on the right, and Regullon is also a capable attacking LB and will support Ocampos. Banega usually has a free role and is pretty damn good at directing the orchestra and getting Sevilla into good spots. Ocampos can float around the frontline and find spaces to be most effective, but Inter don't lack quality, intelligence, or physical prowess at the back with de Vrij, Godin, and Bastoni. Look for Munir to come on against a tired FB (Young is 35 D'Ambrosio is 31), Vasquez can come on to help Banega threaten down the middle, and de Jong is a great backup/sub CF option to El-Nesyri.

Inter have a more straightforward approach because Lukaku and Martinez are fucking good. They can certainly win 1v1 matchups and render setups and tactics fairly useless. If the CBs show signs of not being able to cope on islands, Sevilla will have to keep their FBs further back or more likely keep Fernando and Jordan further back to allow for Sevilla's strategy to remain mostly unchanged. Gagliardini, Barrella, and D'Ambrosio are all capable of helping the attack and add an element of unpredictability. Alexis and Eriksen are excellent options on the bench, although I recall Alexis hobbling off in the semis.

This is a great game.

Lukaku scored a pen at 4' to put Inter up. Sevilla scored a few minutes later and then just now (32') on two beautiful headers from de Jong.

Real-time edit: and Inter just equalize on a cracking header off a free kick.

This game is bananas.

Watch if you can.

The bed football Sevilla's played since the Lukaku own goal is nothing short of shameful, and ruthlessly effective when the referee doesn't seem to know any better.

Four or five separate times, Sevilla players have dipped their heads and feigned getting clipped by boots waist high. But what can you say? They own this competition

Probably would have been worthwhile for the USSF to give Lopetegui an interview seeing as he lobbied for one and all.

It's a shame that it devolved into that. The first 30 minutes were as entertaining as any game I've seen in awhile. Then I had to leave and I didn't see any of the rest.

Just finished watching. The first half was spectacular start to finish, I was really glad I chose to watch the full match and not just highlights. The second half had me rethinking that decision, it was a lot more stilted play, a lot more negative play, and then just tons of shithousery by both teams all the freaking time (Sevilla by far the worst offenders, naturally, once they took the lead on the Lukaku OG).

Congrats to them, they beat two great teams to win that trophy. Inter is going to be fun to watch next year.

Wow, if Lope wanted a job in the States that would be interesting. However, Lope really needed this season to reestablish his standing after the 2018 WC-Madrid debacle. I imagine he will see out his contract with Sevilla then reassess the landscape. He's got a bright career ahead IMO.

It was widely reported that he let USSF know he was interested in 2018, then his agent denied it after the USSF turned him down. The timeline is not entirely clear, but the reports came out a few weeks before Berhalter’s appointment (and months after it was clear USSF was waiting on Gregg). Obviously, Lopetgui wouldn’t have known the player pool, but I’m of the Al Davis persuasion when it comes to interviews - hearing from smart people what they think about your team & where it should go is a useful thing.
