Come on Elway! You, of all people, know that a quarterback that parties a little bit can make it in this league if given the right opportunity.

Why are we supposed to celebrate this? I feel sorry for the kid. He's not the first and obviously won't be the last, but he strikes me as more "immature, needs to grow up" than "asshole, I will enjoy watching his career rot!"

He blew past "immature, time to grow up" a long time ago. He's in "set up a pool to bet on the date of his death" territory.

He's 23. He's not a kid.

If I had a co-worker who was 23 and showed up drunk, didn't show up at all, acted like an asshole, I'd think he was an asshole, treat him like an asshole, and think "maybe he'll fucking get it someday, but fuck him until he does."

Hope for his sake that not all of the Snickers money went up is nose.

I would like to see him get another shot, purely for the entertainment value of having him stay in the league.

And if he was affecting the rest of the work force with this behavior, he'd either get fired or an ass whipping in the parking lot after work. Good luck Johnny, it gets cold in Canada.

If your co-worker was one of the 30 most talented people in the world at his specific job, and your employer had the contractual right to employ him at below-market rates for the next two years, your employer would tell you to GTFO if you couldn't deal with his behavior.

The issue here is that a lot of other guys on the team are similarly elite, and the QB is unavoidably placed in a leadership role over them. A leader can't make up for poor leadership attributes with raw talent.

Wait, didn't his actual employer, the Cleveland Browns, just tell Manziel (one of the "30 most talented people in the world at his specific job, employed at a below-market rate") to GTFO?

And I agree with Papelbon up there; being an addict might explain a person's terrible behavior, but it doesn't excuse it.

Also, when are we suggesting he became an addict? Because about the only thing I thought about him before he was drafted was that he seemed like an immature asshole.

I became convinced Manziel was an addict during last season, when he had his very public relapse -- despite the near certainty that he would be caught, and the obvious consequences that would flow from that.

Perhaps he would be a shitty human being even if he was sober, but it's impossible to know. There's a difference between saying you can know his character apart from his addiction, and saying you'd rather not have your favorite team roll the dice on that.

I don't excuse any behavior of a using addict - however I can tell you that some of the most special people I've ever met did some of the despicable things that go beyond what is mentionable on a public forum while they were in the grips of active addiction.

There is nothing that is too despicable to be mentioned on SoSH.

Ignoring the double negative ;), if this is true of Johnny, then he's screwed. As long as he has money in the bank, he'll be able to find a model and some hometown or college buddies who want to party in Vegas and Miami. It's still happening as we speak.

Without a high paying job the money (along w the friends and the women) dries up pretty damn quick.

Oh, I know. I guess my point was that he started with a pretty big account, and when it's gone, so are his opportunities to replenish it. It won't be an Aaron Hernandez level squander, but still pretty bad.

He's an addichole. Some people seem to be ascribing his issues to his problems with alcohol but I think he was an entitled asshole first and the alcohol just exacerbated his issues. As others have said, to me, he blew past the "just needs to grow up" stage when he beat up his gf.
There is a lot of speculation that he will never get another chance in NFL. In today's society of second and third chances, especially in the sports world, that would be surprising to me but well deserved in a karma sort of way.

I tend to agree with your conclusion that he has a problem with alcohol. That neither precludes nor supersedes the possibility that he's both immature and an entitled asshole.
We have a member here who knows his family personally and has stated, unequivocally, that Manziel is an entitled asshole. His addiction and fucked up behavior are symptoms of his personality.

If you rent a mansion to Johnny, what could go wrong?

“They were supposed to check out at noon,” Goodwin told Page Six. “Manziel was passed out … There was cocaine all over the kitchen table, and mushrooms were still out on the table in front of him. There was booze everywhere . . . broken glasses over the floor and a Champagne glass in a tree.”

Has anyone seen anything worse than this? Because if these are the pictures the owners are making public, then they seem like attention seekers taking advantage of the situation (which would not be the least bit surprising in LA).

Sure, some trace remnants of drugs, but what else? Show real damage or GTFO. If Johnny missed his check out time or made an unreasonable mess, Airbnb has procedures in place to address that which doesn't include running to the press.

Of course, he's brought this upon himself.

Oh no, is that an empty beer bottle standing upright in the kitchen?! And surely he didn't forget to put away the cloth napkins! My goodness gracious!

The living room / kitchen on the final morning of my annual ski trip always looks worse than that, minus the drugs. Somebody's broken a bottle, recyclables are piling up, and nobody feels capable of getting out of bed.

Certainly, Charlie Sheen laughs at such an amateur effort.

It's almost hard to believe why a professional athlete might believe himself to be above the law and untouchable.
