I was at the Futures Gme and saw him take BP. I thought his right handed swing looked more advanced than his left handed swing. More compact and powerful. Any reports on which is his stronger side?

On a side note he is 7 months older than my 6 foot, 145 pound son who was with me and he couldn’t believe how big and filled out Jasson is for his age.
Wow, nice, anyone (on any team) especially impress you?

No one has seen much of him yet, especially in professional games, so we’ll start to get an idea of his strengths and weaknesses soon. I think all his ABs tonight were lefthanded.

Pitching wise I thought Baz looked good. He had an easy delivery and the ball jumped. The most impressive pitcher to me was Cavalli. He had a devastating fastball/slider combination.
I only saw about 10 of the AL guys take bp and thought Witt stood above everyone else. His power was impressive to all fields and he hit two rocket outs in the game. I also liked the two Tiger hitters. Both of them showed good power and hitting skills and could be a dominant duo for many years. Cespedes showed a lot of pop. The last one I saw whose swing I loved was Soderstrom. If he grows into some more power he could be special.
I didn’t see the NL take bp so it was just observing the game like everyone else. The one who didn’t do much in the game but has amazing bat speed in Luciano. He is going to be a monster.

Nice report! Yeah, Baz seemed to be the consensus most impressive pitcher there, although the final pitch by my man Medina to get the K and strand the bases loaded here was just filthy (the last pitch in this clip):

There was so much happening sports-wise on Sunday (Wimbledon, Euro soccer final, Yankees imploding, NBA Finals) that I have the Futures game recorded but haven't seen it yet.

Also seems like based just on talent and readiness, Witt should be up already but they are playing service time games with him because they're out of the race again.

I'm glad to hear this about Witt. I worked his first 6 games of the season out here in Little Rock, and he looked a bit out of sorts, both at the plate and in the field.

What did you think of Julio Rodriguez? He got called up to our team last week and played 4 games before heading out for this and the Olympics, and he looks like he is on a different planet than the rest of the AA players. Just an incredible talent.

I thought Rodriguez looked like he is a crazy 5 tool prospect who was completely over hyped to be in the game. He swung widely at pitches out of the zone and the one time he got on base he stole third easily but over slid by a few feet and was tagged out. He also looked like he was having a lot of fun with the crowd before the game and would be easy to root for.

Gotcha, I largely agree (and can attest that he is a blast with the crowd and really easy to root for). He is definitely a little raw, especially on defense, but I'm figuring the FG was a huge leap in opponents' skill level for him, too. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, he’s fine, he looked very fast tagging from third and scoring a batter or two later.

Dominguez is 18 1/2 now. I think it's pretty unlikely but if he gets to NY in early 2023, that would be the same age as Soto and Vlad Jr. and Devers debuted, a few months over 20 (Soto was 19 and 9 months, youngest of those).

2-2 in the first three innings tonight, a single on a routine grounder to SS and his first HR. He is hitting .500 for Tampa (7-14), 1.429 OPS.

Dominguez has cooled off quite a bit in low A, to be expected for an 18 year old, but today he hit a HR off Vince Velazquez. Not sure what Velazquez was doing rehabbing in low A, but impressive for the young man.

ZiPS (a purely mathematical system, without any hype driving individual rankings) loves Dominguez, ranking him as the #30 prospect overall currently.

"After ZiPS passed on Jasson Dominguez for years because he hadn’t actually played professional baseball, he finally made his debut in 2021, and while some might be disappointed he didn’t make opposing pitchers simply quit the sport in terror, his performance was very good for an 18-year-old, and rather well-rounded for a teen. This season could shoot him into Wander Franco status in the best-case scenario."

I’ve been tracking him because he’s in my prospect group of a long time keeper league- .204/.218/.278 with 20:1 k:bb in 54ab. Anyone seen him/have any more optimistic data points?

He's had a lot of good exit velocity readings, he is still quite young for his league.

Edit: Here is one note from BA from two weeks ago, but a lot of the outs have been hit hard too.

"Yankees OF Jasson Dominguez had a pair of hits with exit velocities over 110.0. He had a 112.7 mph EV on a double and a 111.0 mph EV on a single."

Thanks, Jon!

Promising to read he is hitting the ball hard. I remember the K rate being similar last year, but he was walking far more which had me feeling better about the approach.

He hit his first HR of the season in his first AB today, maybe you inspired him. :)

Dominguez has been putting it together the last couple of weeks, entering tonight, he was at .259/.375/.481 in May.

Tonight he has a 108 MPH single, a 2 RBI double (then he stole third), and a 105 MPH HR, 411 feet, all in the first four innings.

Looks like the stat line of a different guy in May.

9:5 k:bb vs 25:2 in April. K rate still pretty high, but getting into an acceptable range.

Dominguez continues to get hotter, .949 OPS in May coming into tonight and another HR early on tonight.

He finished tonight 2-2 with a HR, a walk, a HBP, a SB and 4 runs scored, season OPS is up to .804 after an awful start. A few more weeks like this and he should get promoted to high A.

Is there anything notable about that Tampa stadium? His splits are insane.

63 ab at home. 15k:5bb 317/386/524.
77 ab on the road. 35k:6bb 234/288/429

even early in the season it sticks out just running down a game log.

it also looks like he stinks vs LHP. I wonder if they consider having him drop his right handed swing.
Something like 155/259/239 with a 52% k rate LHP combined 21/22

294/350/482 with a 31% k rate vs rhp

Yeah, the switch hitting thing will be interesting to keep an eye on.

Meanwhile he keeps on rolling, on base four times again tonight, OPS up to .813. He just turned 19 in January but Peraza is less than 3 years older and 3 levels higher, which is to say Dominguez is not too young to go to high A if they think he's ready.

How is his defensive rep? He looked pretty awkward tracking a ball to the track before dropping it.
I believe he is supposed to be an adequate but not great CF who will likely move to a corner as he moves up. Was he playing CF or a corner?

Edit: I finally found a box score, I see he is playing CF, so there goes that excuse (unfamiliar position). :)

Jasson Domínguez, OF, Single-A Tampa (Yankees No. 2, MLB No. 42), arm strength:

For all the talk of Domínguez’s many tools, his arm strength might not get as much ink as his power and speed. Perhaps it should. Following his return to Tampa this spring, Domínguez registered six of the Tarpons’ eight strongest defensive throws on the season, all of which clocked in at at least 95.4 mph. He maxed out with a 100.5 mph seed from center on May 3 in Bradenton. Raw tools like that don’t require an adjustment against better opposition and should translate wherever Domínguez heads, including his current spot with High-A Hudson Valley.

Dominguez has been better in high A than he was in low A, his first professional 2 HR game tonight, one from each side of the plate, OPS up to .899.

I wonder if they promote him to Somerset, as I think they have another week left, or do they just let his season end on a high note

Yeah, we'll see. He is over 500 PAs for the season, think he'd probably be in AA by now if it wasn't for the missed 2020. He doesn't turn 20 until February.

Dominguez has been crushing in the AA playoffs, his fourth straight multi-hit game tonight and it's just the first inning. He is 8-18 in the playoffs and has homered each of the last two games, these are tough pitchers he is facing too (DET's AA team).

He homered again in the third off a third different pitcher, so through 3 in this final deciding title game, he was 3-3 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs, NY was up 14-0 (now 15-0 in the 8th).

So he homered twice in his final game at high A a few weeks ago, and then twice in his final AA game of the season. Three homers in his final two AA playoff games after being called up just a few weeks ago, he does not turn 20 until February but I think has pushed himself into outside consideration for late season 2023 calliup with these last few games. He is going to the AFL soon also, so he will get more chances to impress before March.

And he has hit a wall, just 8 for 57 in 17 AFL games, no HRs and a .443 OPS.

Bumping...

After that inexplicably weak AFL performance in the previous post in November, Dominguez (just turned 20) has been back this spring with a vengeance. As detailed above, his final game last year included homers from both sides of the plate and six RBIs in the first three innings of the AA championship deciding game, and that is how he continued to hit in his first invite to big league game this March, splits of .455/.520/1.046 in just 25 PAs, 4 HRs in 22 ABs, NY's best hitter this spring, better than Judge, Volpe, everyone.

I am pretty sure he would be NY's best option in LF right now but he will start at AA, but his spring I think greatly increased the chances NY will bring him up midseason. The AA season starts Thursday, so he will be back at it then.
