Jaguars final four drives:

3 plays, 9 yards (Punt)
5 plays, 22 yards (Punt)
3 plays, -1 yards (Punt)
6 plays, 32 yards (TOD)
This. Gameball to the Jaguars for going super conservative with a small lead, and to the D for taking advantage and stopping the run.

Gilmore for that ridiculous pass defensed. McCourty for that tackle.

Amendola for ridiculous body control and hands.

50/50 on McDaniels - super predictable for a good chunk of the game, and then all the stops came out and they cut the jaguars apart.

the refs are being brought up because we only had one penalty called on us the whole game, a kickoff return hold, and clearly that can't possibly be right in an NFL game because no NFL team could possibly be that disciplined.
The Patriots have been unbelievably disciplined in the last 3/4ths of the year. It has been maybe the difference of the year.

Of course, critics view that as a conspiracy. The more likely conclusion -- that the best coach in history has coached his players not to take penalties and instead to force the opponent to earn their yards -- doesn't seem to occur to these rocket scientists despite being the Occam's razor answer.

One of the funnier comments heard by a Steelers fan during the game: "So that’s what a QB sneak looks like."

Have to love it.

And it's not like refs were calling offensive holding, or illegal contact, you know, the kinds of "it happens on pretty much every play" penalties you can easily point to and say "there's no way the other team had zero of those". The flags they threw were on the Jags were all correct, is anyone disputing those? If they aren't, have examples of flags that should've thrown on the Pats been shown? Smells like another tantrum.

As soon as Tom did that my first thought was how annoyed him doing that would make Steelers fans.

Also that first PI against Jax was obvious, I can’t believe people are complaining. Yes it was uncatchable, because the db pushed Cooks out of bounds 30 yards down field.

Exactly. Not iffy at all - the ball was in the air - redirecting the WR isn't allowed at all. The DB played that like it was punt coverage.

All of the above. This game was a true team effort. A lot of singular plays had such a huge impact on the outcome.

That post is a beautiful piece of truth.
Amendola's playoff numbers actually aren't anything crazy.

12 games, 49 rec, 557 yds, 6 td (projects to 65 rec, 743 yds, 8 td)
1-1, 20 yards passing
3 rushes, 16 yards

So definitely not bad, but not crazy. But my goodness does he come up with ENORMOUS plays when they most need it. I'm with whomever else said that maybe there's not a metric for "clutch", but whatever "clutch" is, Amendola has it.

Dude has been tremendous.

And by the way, Brady was incredible - 26-38, 290, 2 td, 0 int - but he could have had absolutely eye-popping numbers, if not for a couple of drops (including Cooks' surefire long TD).

Pats defense came up big when it counted. They get my game ball.

Doug Marrone with a game ball for taking a knee with 55 seconds left before the half and 2 timeouts.
This. If the Pats had done that in the same situation we'd all have a collective aneurism. I get that they didn't want to have Bortles throwing downfield, but come on. You have a chance to put 3 more on the board in a 1-score game and you opt to not even try?

It’s almost like teams get ahead of the Pats in the first half and forgot that BB is a master at halftime adjustments and TB is the GOAT because of his 4th quarter play. They play conservative and to just hold the lead.

The Eagles kept their foot on the accelerator tonight. The Jags put it in neutral.

Especially when you have a kicker with a great leg. They just needed 30 yards to have a decent chance at points. Pats only had 1 timeout, so there was very little to lose unless you turn the ball over or throw 3 straight incompletions.

In the Super Bowl Atlanta got roasted for being too aggressive with a lead in the 4Q; today the Jags are getting called out for being too conservative.

Moral of the story: it doesn't matter what you do, the GOAT will find a way to beat your behind.
It’s not even that. Run a pass play in first down. If you get something useful, keep going, if not, kneel.

The part that makes zero sense is not running the clock to 2min warning before punting if you plan on playing conservatively.

I think that's explained by Marrone screwing up. The Jags must have thought the declined penalty stopped the clock. That's the only real explanation.

That's "McNabb not knowing OT" level stupid, because the declined penalty means the clock status simply reverts to what it would have been without the penalty.

I think, like we've seen a lot, that there's a not insignificant level of "other teams are just dumb" when we talk about the Patriots being "smart".

I might be missing something, but did Calais Campbell do anything of note against Fleming in this game?
Campbell and Ngakoue has 26.5 sacks between them this year and by my recollection they had zero MENTIONS, nevermind sacks, in this game. Seriously, I don't remember either player doing anything and Ngakoue doesn't even show up in the box score.

So the OL gets a game ball from me, in addition to all the other guys mentioned extensively.

Amendola.

Was it McDaniels in Do Your Job 2 who said they went to him on a specific play because he's their "best junk ball catcher," meaning makes great catches in traffic on less-than-perfect throws?

There's a reason they go to him in the clutch in the first place.

BB talked about him this week being a great punt fielder with guys all around.

That punt return to the JAX 30 was great.

i think campbell had a TFL or at least a stuff on a lewis run in the 4th Q where he made a nice move upfield to blow up the play... but yeah, very quiet day from those two overall.

obviously Brady, Dola and Gilmore came up huge, but I would put Cooks pretty close behind. there was a consistency to his connection with Brady - not perfect, but much improved - that has not always been there this season.

QB1 for being impossibly calm in the storm.
Cooks and Gilmore for making up for whatever disappointments (earned or otherwise) some fans may have felt during the regular season.
James Harrison for those two plays.
Phillip Dorsett because they need to include him more.
The contain of the front seven in the 2nd half.
Minnesota fans for rooting for the Patriots more than they thought they would once those drunk obnoxious Eagle fans show up.

EDIT: Oh, and Danny Amendola. Sorry, "Playoff." You killed it.

Immediately one of my favorite Pats games. A slugfest with a worthy opponent.

They way they turned the tide on field position in the 4th. Stopping the run and blitzing. Offense dipping into the bag of of tricks.

Great game Jags. Bortles was really good. Fantastic play calling (until all the inside runs late.) Solid tackling. Fighting for firsts, exasperating the Pats D at times.

Few penalties, great job by Clete and crew.

Enjoyment was enhanced by Romo, best analysis since Madden. Great rookie year.

One note / Tom threw great deep balls his game. I can think of really only one pass that I was worried for an interception. He had a great game

I was very impressed by the Jags coaching. They were pretty conservative with Bortles in the second half, but in most instances that was probably the right move. Can’t ask too much from Bortles without courting disaster.

Obviously the D majorly stepped up in the second half, but the improved pass protection was enormous too. The ability of this coaching staff to make mid-game adjustments continues to be a critical element of their success.

That was a great game, and unlike pretty much any other playoff game in this era. It wasn't like the Pats offense was turning it over like some of their playoff losses. It wasn't like the Jags D line was killing the O line and killing Brady like some of the playoff losses. I did feel like the Jags were the more physical team for a good stretch of the game, especially their WRs vs the Pats DBs in the running game. One of their best wins, right up there with 51, 49, Baltimore 2014, etc.

I actually thought it was similar to the Scottish Game with the huge difference of the D making the final stand after the Pats scored the go ahead TD.
