The Plan For the #1, er, #3 Overall Pick?

I'm starting to think this was Ainge trying to see if Magic would give up something crazy. He probably called philly to get a base offer and then sent it out to the big reporters.
Maybe, but their big assest--next year's pick--is owned by Philly.

Unless Ainge is just like "Man, having the #1 is boring--let's liven things up a bit."

It would be kind of weird if the whole bidding war was actually Philly just trying to get in front of the Lakers to take Jackson. Problem for the Celtics of course is Fultz doesn't make it past the Lakers so whatever Philly's motivation is kind of irrelevant to what it means to the Celtics (other than, of course, the idea for all the Jackson lovers here that he won't be around if you trade down to 3, which might make this move seem worse to everyone).

In a world where the Sixers aren't willing to do #3 and return the Lakers pick to move up 1, could the Celtics step in and provide the difference?
Something like:
Celtics get: Swap rights to the best of the 2018 BKN/PHI/LAL picks (basically tank and ping pong insurance), some of the Sixers 2nd round picks.
Lakers get: #3 and second of those three picks, Okafor
Sixers get: #2 and Avery Bradley, and a promise the Celtics aren't taking Jackson.

Motive for the Celtics - shed Bradley's salary to clear room for Hayward. Allows them to keep Rozier if they want (though they have a lot of guards). Nearly guaranteed a top 3 pick next year.
Motive for Lakers - they get a pick back next year, gamble on Okafor
Motive for Sixers - they get their man this year, they get Bradley, they shed Okafor.

These of course are just meandering thoughts based on a single tweet. So take them for what they are worth.

Ainge is just trying to stir up a bidding war to see what might be offered. That is good GM-ing.

I wonder what the Knicks would want for Porzingis?

For realz: Draft Fultz, deal for Hayward, don't overthink this.

Brown was a league average shooter as a 20-year old. There were plenty of the same "but he can't shoot!" comments here last year and people clamoring to draft Dunn and Hield. It would seem to me Brown can continue to improve his shot and already has from college. Thus I would already dispute your "can't shoot" premise.

If Ainge sees superior size and athleticism in Jackson over Fultz, along with the same work ethic he saw in Brown, I can certainly understand his decision, particularly if they gain significant assets in return. I don't agree with your assertion that they "play the same role," either. There's plenty of room to have both on the floor at the same time.

Yeah, this is a legit concern. I think Ball is pretty close talent-wise, but I want no part of that shitshow and I doubt Danny does either. I'd guess Butler would be the backup plan if the Lakers take Jackson.
You have said this a few times since yesterday. I remember the Dunn love here, but, for the life of me can't remember anyone clammering for Hield.

FWIW, Stephen A Smith was on ESPN saying he's hearing from his Philly sources that they might be in fact interested in Jackson and not Fultz.
Seems this it the way to execute it to avoid any potential curveball by the Lakers......C's draft Fultz, 76ers draft Jackson and then make a post draft trade along with other agreed upon pieces. If the Lakers take Jackson instead of Ball then C's keep Fultz......

I agree with the folks above saying Ainge is just seeing what's out there. If someone panics and massively overpays between L.A. and Philly, make a deal. I think something could be done with the Sixers, if both teams are willing to deal in conference, if Colangelo feels he needs Fultz. I really think this could expand into a lot of movement

Here
Your Preferred Celtic Target at 3
12 votes for Hield representing 10% of the votes. Dunn had 21 votes, Brown had 5.
This community was low compared to other Celtics fans, as well. Twitter and comments sections were all about Hield. I'm not sure why, exactly, my guess is one of the radio talking heads was in love with him.
Wow, reading the thread, there was a lot of Hield love. Sorry Ed!
No problem! I'm pretty sure I liked Bender, but I was pretty much guessing. I viewed it as there being a top 2 and then like 6-7 guys after you could make a case for. I'm never against picking the best combination of size, athleticism, and motor.

Skimming the thread, most of the people who were arguing for Hield were arguing that he was able to provide the most help and best fit now. They acknowledged that he wasn't the highest upside player. I think this forum tends to have a slightly longer term view than the average Celtics comments section.

I am fine if Danny likes Jackson as much as Fultz and picks up next years Lakers pick. I just don't want to turn around and trade the picks for Butler and force this teams window to be the next 2-3 years. Unless Jaylen makes THE LEAP I don't think they will have enough to get over the hump.

Skimming that thread... the "why in the world won't Danny trade the #3 for Okafor" takes have aged poorly.

I want 2 picks and I hope Danny holds out.

Better of Lakers/Sixers in 2018
Better of Kings/Sixers in 2019

Then I probably do it. That would give the Celtics

2018: Nets, Lakers/Sixers, Celtics
2019: Grizzlies (if not top 8), Kings/Sixers, Celtics

Lots you could do with that ammo but Butler is absolutely not what I would use it on.

Yea you're probably right in that this trade will go to draft day. C's could be picking at 1 for Philly and Philly picking at 3 for Boston.

The knee that was "wrapped" was not the knee that he had issues with the latter part of the season.
Yes, I know. Not sure that's a positive though is it? I have no idea if there's any physical concerns here, I do agree with HRB it's more an unknown than a 'no worries' thing.

What if it's the reverse? Celtics pick Jackson at 1. Hope the Lakers screw up and buy into Ball in LA hype. 76ers take Fultz and trade Fultz+ back to Celtics for Jackson? Sounds like everyone is on the Jackson bandwagon all of a sudden.

If Ainge pulls that off and we get Fultz plus picks then he has Jedi mind control off the charts.

It makes sense for PHI to want to wait to execute the trade too if they like Ball as much as the rest of the league seems to. They could keep their future assets and still get an elite G prospect.

I'm dreading the thought of Fultz being a perfect fit for that Sixers team over the next 15 years next to Simmons, Embiid, Saric, etc. If Danny fucks up this evaluation and Fultz ends up being the stud that many expect him to be, then that team becomes pretty damn formidable for a long ass time. Josh Jackson seems to be yet another imperfect player (bad shooting, bad wingspan) and who knows where the LAL/Phi pick ends up next year... we might end up flipping Fultz for #3 and something around 10 next year. If it's the Sac pick the following year instead, and Silver changes the age requirement NEXT year, then there may be a historic lack of high end talent in the Sac draft if everyone declares for next year.

Way too many variables to assume any of these picks will be worthwhile for a team already loaded with solid depth and not a ton of high end talent.

In the video I saw, it wasn't clear to me that it was a wrapped knee vs. something else like the inner fabric of his pants since he had the legs pulled up to his knees.

I was going to suggest that back when the video came out but I wasn't sure which knee Fultz had a problem with. If it's not the same knee, then we might be inventing something because he was running around just fine.

If nothing else, trading the #1 pick sure makes the next couple weeks a lo more interesting.

My guess -

BOS trades #1 and some other future pick

PHI trades # 3, Saric, and 2018 LAL pick

Hate it. That's all I got.

Parade Fultz around then deal him. Sigh.

EDIT: And screw the protections unless it's in our favor.

I don't get it. All these years the Sixers get lottery picks and they never get a guard . They have TJ McConnell running the point for goodness sakes. Now the Celtics get the first pick in the draft for the first time since I've been following the game and they are giving it up? And they're giving the Sixers the best guard since Kyrie?

I like Danny and I defend him all the time. He better be getting the equivalent of the Comstock Lode from Philly.

How would that even be possible?
It rolls over if it's not a lottery pick? I don't know.

My point is if Philly gets these players and still can't find their damn way out of the lottery, screw them.

EDIT: I just don't get it--someone has to write the story of what Ainge is seeing here because his plan paid off--we got the #1 pick. And now we deal it back?

Man, I hope JJ is a MONSTER and those 2 picks hit next year.

It's killing me that we still have almost a week of this to go.

Discussions have centered on Sixers sending 2017 No. 3, 2018 Lakers pick, and possibly 2021 1st -- including complicated protections.
That sounds like an awful deal. Improve the Sixers so the pick you are getting back is less valuable (whether that is 2019 or 2021- the Sixers will not be a bottom three team).
Makes no sense.
This is going to end very poorly for the Celtics (if the quotes deal does go down).
I can't even comprehend watching Futlz make All Star teams and possibly lead the Sixers to the finals.
If this deal goes down, there is a good chance the Sixers win a title before the Celtics.

Not nearly enough, Danny. Celtics have all the leverage here.

On Fultz's knee: I raised this concern, way back in the thread (it was roundly ignored ;)). But my faith is in the Celtics medical staff: Fultz was in town for two days, they checked him out well, and I'm sure they did their due diligence on the knee and everything else.

Soooooo, winning the lottery is likely going to net us the Lakers pick next year.

He must LOVE next year's draft.

If Danny likes another player and he can pick up next years Lakers pick it is as if he is getting the Lakers pick for free. That is a good move assuming his player analysis is correct.

Someone sketch me out the lineup if we add Jackson/Heyward.

Cuz I really wanted to watch Fultz (in Boston) with NBA spacing...

HRB nailed it a month ago. Danny is not enamored with Fultz. He is going to draft the guy he likes better than Fultz and he is going to add a probable Top 7 2018 draft pick. That's quality GM'ing.
