Bryan Almonte knew this was something he wanted to be a part of.

His official title is communications manager, but Almonte wears multiple hats for the Red Sox, including working with the club’s marketing and branding department. Almonte is also passionate about fashion.

So when he got word that the Red Sox were teaming up with Nike and Major League Baseball as part of Nike’s “City Connect” series, Almonte reached out to Red Sox executive vice president and chief marketing officer Adam Grossman. The feeling was mutual. Grossman knew Almonte would be the right person to work closely with both him and Nike to spearhead the venture.
On Tuesday, the Red Sox launched the campaign, announcing that the team will wear an innovative and creative uniform featuring a yellow jersey with blue letters on April 18-19 to commemorate and celebrate Patriots Day in Boston. The uniforms will say “Boston” across the front and feature Boston’s 617 area code on the left sleeve.
“When Adam had approached me about this project with Nike, he was like, ‘We got something special’,” Almonte recalled.

Today it’s just the Boston Red Sox, but as the 2021 season progresses six other teams will be revealed: the Miami Marlins will be next followed by the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

You know what, I was ready to dislike it, but I don't. It's so different that it doesn't bother me, I actually prefer this to, say, the St. Pat's green ones, that try to split the difference between the unique day and the tradition.

weird nitpick but i don't like that they changed the font on the jersey but not the hat. Change both, or change neither

hat also reminds me of UCLA...

This sums it up for me. I can see me getting the hat and maybe even a jersey which I haven't done in a Looooong time.

I like the Jersey a lot, the hat is basically one of the "non-trad" colorways they already sell, just with an extra color in the letter outline

I feel like I've gotten to the point in my life where sports uniforms won't get me all worked up, but I hate these. And I especially hate that they'll be wearing them on Patriots Day, marring one of my favorite days of the year. #dramatic

That's exactly my problem with it, too. If the B on the hat was the same as the stenciled B on the jersey, I'd be alright with it.

Referring to the marathon is not a bad idea... but they kind of half-assed it. I'd rather see more of the uniform design look like the shoulder patch (which is awesome). Maybe collaborate with the marathon on the font for the jersey to have it be the same one as at the start/finish lines (and if the Marathon doesn't have a consistent one of those, jointly develop it.).

Edit: Or... why doesn't the marathon imitate the Red Sox? Let the marathon red, white and blue it up and snag the Sox font! [Mostly kidding.]

Edit again: Patriots Day is/was the only day I liked seeing the red jerseys.

I’m not responsible for my actions if I see someone wearing these in public.

I hate Nike so much.

I originally thought they were going with the colors of the "official" jackets, etc from 2013, as that year inspired a LOT of Boston Strong merch tied to that years marathon colors.

But yeah, that color blue is still very wrong.

Edit: Hmmm.. maybe they were going with the LAST marathon's colors from 2019 ?

How big are you? Just want to make sure I keep my head on a swivel because I'm definitely grabbing one of these jerseys...

I don't think I get the Nike hate - stuff like this is cool and brings in younger fans (which baseball desperately needs right now). The company brings a lot of new interests and money to the game which is a win for everyone.

Hideous.

Baseball can't decide whether it wants to be traditional or cutting edge, so of course it tries to be both. The results here are appalling.

Are we sure this isn't a late April Fool's joke?

Hard pass. I hate most alternative uniforms, and these really suck. Nike ruined the Patriots uniforms last year, now they're coming for the Sox.
This is its own subject but I'd "blame" that one more on the Pats than Nike if you don't like them.

We have a sport that is desperate to bring in younger fans. Bright colored unis attract eyeballs and the kids love this kind of stuff. I don’t see how wearing these for 2 days is a big deal.

SoSH threads on uniform variations / color schemes always read like a transcript of Statler & Waldorf up in the balcony.

(I particularly like the hat. I'll show myself out.)

Miami (oh, Miami!)
If you told me about the concept without seeing pictures, I'd have thought it worthwhile to explore.

If you showed me the pics without the explanation, I'd have thought the uniforms shockingly stupid-looking.

As it is, they are redeemed to only moderate stupidity by the concept.

To me, the issue is more with the opportunity cost. I loved the tradition of wearing the special "Boston front" uniforms, first made in haste after the Marathon bombings, on Patriots' Day. The "Our Fucking City" uniforms.

I just read the Marathon is October 11th this year. I say, if the Sox are playing on that day, then they can wear these uniforms.

If this were a Boston specific effort tied in with the marathon I would be more open to it. "City Connect" is an MLB/Nike effort to sell merch. that will be rolling out across the country. I guess teams having 6 variations of on field unis isn't enough. Why don't they dust off and spruce of the turn forward the clock effort. And while they're at it...get off my fucking lawn!!!

Without the picture of the marathon finish line I wouldn't have been able to place the color scheme and font. As a one-off, whatever, I guess. They look terrible but the Sox struggle with alternate jerseys in general. They keep wearing the red and blue alternates and they're just so mediocre.

I don't hate them, but I don't love them either. I think it's the font on the jersey that is most bothersome, followed by the not quite right colors (maybe it's the photos?). If it were me, I'd go for the now traditional Patriots Day "Boston" uni but in Marathon colors. Like someone else said, these seem half-assed.

Patriots Day
Mother's Day
Memorial Day
Father's Day
Fourth of July
The white/black jerseys weekend
Little League Weekend
Friday road jersey
Friday home jersey

I think the only one I was alright with was the "Our Fucking City" jerseys. It felt real instead of some promotion.

By the way, I'm fine with St. Patrick's Day if it is actually St. Patrick's Day, but not on some random day during the regular season.

And yes, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

That's a no from me dawg. I don't understand Nike's obsession with completely remaking a team's color palette to do alternate jerseys (see many of their NBA city connects). I get that you need to do something new to be noticable but you've also got to tie it back into the traditional as well or they just fade into history.

"We understand that for traditionalists, this may not work for them and we're OK with that," Grossman said. "We get it. This is not meant to replace our crisp whites. That's not what this is about, but it's about connecting and having other people look at us differently, especially younger more diverse crowds. We embrace that, and it's important to acknowledge and celebrate that, and that's what this represents."

Younger, more diverse crowds?

The NBA is nearly to the point where traditional unis have become alternates.

I like the color combo of yellow and blue, but these unis remind me more of what UCLA or the Chargers might wear. I didn't make the marathon connection. They should have licensed the BAA logo with the unicorn and then throw them a piece of the uniform sales.
