I haven’t listened to the entire sit down with Yasi to the end yet, any hint about what’s coming next beyond “my producers say wait, but it’s coming”?
This was basically Rob's We Are The World, except he's doing all the parts.

Also I can't prove it because I deleted my account, but my last tweet- several years back- was telling Rob that yes, we do really need a Morphine episode. I walked home from Union Sq to Charlestown last night, after a few drinks and an edible, and I was basically teary eyed fistpumping for a good bit of the episode.

I was really happy to hear him finally get to Morphine in this episode - specifically the beautiful "In Spite of Me."

I was disappointed with the last episode because I (looks at shoes) really love the song "Closing Time". Also went to school with Dan Wilson and later on worked with plenty of people that worked with him in his current super-producer role, and he is unanimously characterized as a kind, generous, and friendly guy.

The Rob segment talked much less about "Closing Time" the song than the norm for a "60 Songs" episode, and barely talked about Dan or the members of the band or their origin story and where-are-they-now of it all at all. That was a bummer, but I get it -- the finale was Rob's valedictory and all the references to hearing "goodbye" in songs was undeniably amusing. [No mention of Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Kind of Life" in the canon of songs with "Goodbye" seemed like a miss to me though...]

But what really bummed me was the interview segment. Sure, Yasi is smart and funny and knowledgable. But the two of them actually dumped on the song and being generic and unremarkable and built on a metaphor they brushed off as "whatever". Again, didn't mention the individual bandmembers or songwriters at all. Yasi was outright dismissive of "Closing Time", and Rob gave in to it without much of a struggle. Made me feel like the uncool kid hanging out with people who'd really rather be vibing on Morphine or whatever.

Interesting perspective, because I thought Rob's section did give Closing Time its due at least as much as any other song that he did that did not come from a band that has had a lasting cultural impact. I now know 1000% more about Semisonic, Dan Wilson, and the dual meaning of that song than I did before having listened to that episode, and I am someone who likes that song, too. Agree that Yasi was more dismissive and Rob was not particularly interested in talking more about Semisonic with her, but that was fine, too, considering he was also trying to wrap up the entire project. I could certainly feel differently if I had a personal connection to Wilson like you do.

If you really love this song, you should read, "So You Wanna be a Rock n Roll Star?" by Jacob Slichter. It's all about the band, that song, what happened before and what happened after. It's absolutely fantastic and was one of my favorite books of two years ago. Highly recommended.

Yasi Salek is the absolute fucking worst. Unlistenable.

Maura Johnston is RIGHT THERE. But I think she was only interviewed on one episode. Yasi got, like, 34.
Come on, Yasi is a the coolest chick in the history of women. Just ask her.

Holy cow is she someone tough to listen to. It's really off putting and exhausting. Having her on the last episode was a genuine drag.

Thanks for the recommendation! Jacob also was a classmate (like Dan, very well-liked and respected though I knew him only slightly), and I can't believe I missed this. Headed to Amazon.

Yeah I turned off the last episode when the first half ended. I figured the segment with Yasi would be the 60 Songs equivalent of Dani burning the city on the back of her dragon.

I watched a few of these ‘Ringer Moments’ videos - there appear to be several others they’ve released as part of this new series. I just couldn’t get through them. In the bits I’ve watched the presenters appear to be adding nothing compelling to what is really just a recitation of an event; I kept waiting for some kind of crazy or interesting personal story featuring the presenter that didn’t come. Not sure what this content adds relative to their actual podcasts on the topics, though I expect they’re cheap to make and generate clicks.

Has anyone checked on Russillo? I am kind of worried about him after watching Jaylen Brown outplay Luka on the biggest stage.

I'm equally worried about KOC. It's gotta be tough out in LA tonight.
The one great thing about KOC is he just shrugs off being wrong on his predictions. Russillo may have had a stroke. He really believed in Kyrie's and Luka's D

‘I mean, I don’t think it’s crazy to, like, say that one game doesn’t change literally EVERYTHING. This weird thing is happening where if you say Luka is kind of a major problem for other teams but things don’t go their way in one game then suddenly the Mavs are in trouble and Luka and Kyrie aren’t gonna be heard in this series. Ok. Just from texting with some NBA people, that’s not what the prevailing view is, is all I will say.’

Ha, excellent impression.
'How many times have we seen that Game 1 of a series is actually the outlier, Bill? You saw some pieces in that third that urready have you saying, yeah, that's the way you need to operate.'

Luka is the best offensive player in the NBA. He is amazing. Joker has a couple of small holes but Luka make Bird in his prime blush.

His defense was so bad tonight, and the Celtics didn't even expose it as much as they should. You cannot win against the Celtics if there is someone who let Tatum and Brown dribble drive at will especially when Kyrie is being Kyrie. There is no player in the NBA that can outscore the Celtics when you are letting them play 5 on 3 1/2.

Was Phil like 50-0 or something like that if he won game 1

Good Russillo. You did miss the “are we going to do that thing?” and a few “it’s like”s.

Imo, that whole series is worth it for the one Van did about the Saints

To see this done right, look at Jon Bois: Deep Rewind series.

(Jon Bois - criminally underrated. An actual genius among us.)

Pretty sure Russillo can't get his head around the Celtics are up 3-0. Even Nick Wright took his medicine, at this point I am embarrassed for Russillo.

Edit - He coped by turning hard on Luka and shitting all over Tatum.

I turned his last podcast off around the 8 minute mark. “The story from the Celtics point of view was how they almost blew the game”. Then he discussed it with a tone like they were down 0-3. I was wondering if he ever got around to giving anyone any credit.

Winning games in the finals is hard. Sometimes you are going to look bad because the other team is good too.

He did the current thing of saying he was a huge Tatum fan then spent a shit ton of time shitting on him and saying you can't win a championship with him because he isn't a super duper star. His guest wore him down.

I love Ryen Russillo. I will listen to him any day.

His takeaway from the Finals is it was a Mavs story. Literally saw the entire game through the lens of Dallas and couldn't believe Luka and Kyrie didn't win. Russillo is becoming a guilty pleasure like Heat Podcasts (I love Heat Podcasts).

I love that Ryen has become sub Nick Wright in cogent NBA takes.

Edit - Actually he came around and made fun himself for not getting that having two wings that can create and play D is really really good.

I loved listening to this one and pitying him
I haven't listened yet, but I really like Russillo too. I feel bad for guys like him and KOC that can't appreciate being a fan anymore. Whatever issues folks may have with Simmons, Verno, and others, it has to be pretty great to have success and still be able to really enjoy a night like last night. BS has the means to go to all the games and do whatever he wants. Pod with his Dad, etc. That's joy. Not caring anymore feels like it's a 9-5.

I listened to the first 8 minutes of Russillo…and I honestly can’t fucking take this guy. Your takeaway from being at that game is to do a whole Woe is Luka routine? The and chunky baby who did absolutely nothing in the game?

IMO, Russillo is way too self important. He only ever admits he’s wrong when he’s 1000000% wrong. He wants to be a fun, funny guy but he just can’t ever laugh at himself or admit any of his educated “tape takes” may have been fucking stupid
His commentary this entire series was an absolute joke. I’ve called this out Lowe for what he’s said about this series and even he just talked about how great the Celtics were.
This miserable prick spends 8 minutes talking about how Luka was undone by the Celtics “others”

It is interesting how each of the the Ringer guys have turned the corner after the finals.

House and Sal were pretty solidly Celtics in 5 so the betting guy and the football betting guy were right.
Bill said Celtics but was really worried about jinxing his team
Verno thought there was no chance that Porzingis was going to play then said it was coin flip without Porzingis and admitted he was wrong.
KOC took Verno shit and immediately pointed out he was wrong
Russillo had Van Pelt give a 30 minute beatdown, the likes of which I have never seen anyone invite upon themselves on their own podcast, then moved on to golf.
Wos got in his feelings, waved his hands, and hopes this is the end of it.

Rob Mahoney was really good through the whole playoffs.

It's a great pod, SVP is always excellent. Highly recommend.

I do think people are overselling the "SVP was taking Rusillo to the woodshed," however. I think people are hearing what they want to hear.

He was not picking on Russillo. Russillo was just speechless hearing someone who he really respects shitting on all the talking points Russillo had taken up. I don't think Van Pelt was there shitting on Russillo or even knew Russillo had every point he made. But I also assume Van Pelt had told Russillo what he thought and Russillo thought "Hey I like this guy and he isn't going to dance on my grave. Why not take my medicine like this?" But when Van Pelt got going you could see Russillo just processing. He just didn't really talk and it is a podcast.

KOC is out of The Ringer, going to Yahoo! Sports to do a bunch of multi-media stuff. Not sure what it means for The Mismatch, but would be a shame to lose the KOC and Verno chemistry.

KOC says some baffling things at times but I'll always support a fellow MASCAC grad making it in media.

Addition by subtraction for me. I didn't think he brought much to the table. Prone to hot takes and he seemed like he would come up with a conclusion and then go search for the facts to back it up.
