To the tune of Handlebars: Can he make a fantasy trade by telepathy...by telepathy...by telepathy.
Man I think you gotta take the “fantasy” out. I’m singing this in my head and it throws off the rhythm.

Maybe, who should I start in my flex spot, in my flex spot in my flex spot (cue horns).

Rob absolutely has to cover either "Frantic" or "St. Anger" if only so I can hear him wax poetic about the incredible Some Kind of Monster.

This leads me to an interesting question - how many artists will have episodes in BOTH the 90s and 00s iterations of the podcast? Eminem and Jay-Z definitely will. OutKast and Radiohead are also safe bets. U2 might if he covers "Vertigo." I could see him doing "Toxic," so Britney will probably be a two-timer. Beyonce didn't get her OWN episode in the 90s - it was a Destiny's Child song - but she'll absolutely get one from the 00s. Similarly, No Doubt was covered in the 1990s, but Gwen might get an episode covering "Hollaback Girl."

As far as long shots go, Rob might cover something from Daft Punk's aughts output. Maybe something from Beck's Sea Change, too? Like my Metallica suggestion above, I could also see him covering one of Weezer's newer, shittier songs if only to contrast it with their earlier, better work.

Green Day seems pretty likely to me, with American Idiot.

And if you want a contrast to earlier, better work, may I submit Chinese Democracy*? Although "this sucks" isn't really Rob's style.

(*which I kinda enjoy, actually)

And while it's not the 90s, I'd be very amused to see the Junkie XL / Elvis "A Little Less Conversation".

I didn’t listen to the “Goodbye Earl” episode, so I don’t know if he got into the “shut up and sing” stuff or not, but “Not Ready To Make Nice” could make for a good one. It’s a bonus double, too, since the song was written by Dan Wilson of Semisonic.

Jacoby is the new Mismatch co-host. The chemistry isn’t bad, but it’s not fully there yet. A tad too much energy at times. It’s been two episodes so I think they’ll find their footing by midseason.

Mcshay and Goldsberry had contracts they were waiting on to run out. That’s why Simmons alluded to it the other week with Goldsberry but couldn’t actually say anything. Russillo did the same with Mcshay a few weeks back. Point being, Lowe likely has to ride this out for a certain time.

I was unware of McShay coming in, but makes sense given the loss of Kevin Clark and to a lesser extent, Ben Solak, as that is a big name to slap on all their draft coverage.

Jacoby I feel like has already been working at The Ringer for the past month.

If The Ringer is still spending to bring in named talent, it seems pretty much like a lock Lowe is headed there, unless he gets a big offer from one of the non-ESPN TV networks like NBC.

Have to think that either Lowe gets his own special hiring day or NBC wrapped him up for next year's NBA coverage exclusively and they haven't announced it yet.

Honestly, I've enjoyed the episodes about the songs I DON'T like more than the ones I DO like. So I'm for it.

That Lowe hasn’t posted on the NBA even on his twitter (where he’s posted on WNBA and international hoops) makes me concerned he has a non compete for some period of time here—presumably in exchange for a severance payment.

That will be a major bummer this NBA season if true.

Hoping there’s some other explanation and the closer the season gets without NBC/Ringer/his own site the more that will seem like the case.

I fear that's the case and why ESPN cutting him a few weeks before the season starts was so cold.

Metallica getting an episode would be fun considering how dogshit St. Anger was and how insane SKoM was.

Hollaback Girl is getting an episode, I'd bet a shiny quarter on that. It's a Pharrell-produced diss track aimed at Courtney Love.

Britney's getting one -- you can't tell the story of the 00s without Toxic or Oops I Did It Again (Toxic is better).

And you can't tell the story of music in this millennium without talking about Daft Punk, and specifically, One More Time. It's arguably the best song of the 00s and maybe the best song...ever? I'm joking, but it's a perfect, sample-laden song that is so joyful that every time I hear it I get about 15% happier.

I'd be shocked if he did Pork & Beans or Hash Pipe (though Hash Pipe and Gwen's What You Waiting For? are more or less the same song) since Weezer has hardly been relevant since Pinkerton.

Still... I'm very excited for the next year of Rob telling embarrassing stories about himself.

Yeah I was thinking this today. As much as I think he's declined over the last few years, this will be a major void in NBA coverage this year if he's out for any real length of time.

The 90s episode I enjoyed the least was when Rob had on the awful Jay Caspian Kang to shit all over R.E.M. A low point of a series I otherwise adored.
Rob said he got more negative feedback about that episode than all the other episodes combined. It was atrocious.

I did not know this.
Oh yes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollaback_Girl

To search for inspiration, Stefani and Pharrell had a lengthy discussion in which Stefani said that she had yet to write a song about her intentions for pursuing a solo career. She remarked how the album was missing an "attitude song", and she recalled a derogatory comment that grunge musician Courtney Love had made about her in an interview with Seventeen magazine: "Being famous is just like being in high school. But I'm not interested in being the cheerleader. I'm not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She's the cheerleader, and I'm out in the smoker shed."[4][5] Stefani discussed the song's inspiration in the March 2005 issue of NME: "Y'know someone one time called me a cheerleader, negatively, and I've never been a cheerleader. So I was, like, 'OK, fuck you. You want me to be a cheerleader? Well, I will be one then. And I'll rule the whole world, just you watch me.'"[6] The song uses a lyrical and a melodic interpolation of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen, referencing the common usage of the song at sporting events, aimed at losing opponents, with Stefani's antagonistic stance likely aimed at Love.[7]

Same here, like if you actively HATE R.E.M. I don't think we can be friends. If you don't care for them/their music then fine, but man that was a lot of effort to throw some shade their way.

Kang's an awful person. Fun fact: He downloaded a bunch of Grantland data from the ESPN analytics system when his freelance gig came to end. Then he shared it online to crap on the site. I just so happened to run ESPN analytics at the time and it caused a massive headache. Such a dick thing to do. Screw him forever.

Thats like a bunch of wows!

First of all, cool job!

Second of all, ultra super dick move!

Third of all how do you think that’s a good plan? Fing over the four letter network I mean.

Finally…hating REM? Life’s Rich Pageant alone is worth adoration, add in Murmur, Fables and the rest of the catalog and they are on the all time band list. Please. (Edit - reviewing the album list its Fables of the Reconstruction that is my favorite: Driver 8 and Can’t get there from Here are epically good songs that more than hold up)

60 Songs is my all time favorite podcast, and I think Rob is incredible.
But Yasi may be the all time worst guest going. Just unlistenable. Any other guest would have made this SOAD episode much better.

Yasi is awesome, but she's a very acquired taste. It took me a few episodes with her, but I think she's great. Her own podcasts are excellent too. Big fan of 24 question party people in particular.

I dunno, I tried. I've listened to a lot of Bandsplain episodes. I liked the older episodes that were more succinct. Once it started with 4+ hour episodes, it got to be too much and I was good.

Bummer, they were a great live band although a little different post-Bill Berry. I saw them in 1995 then without Berry in '03...in fact the 2003 Great Woods lineup was just ridiculous. Saw R.E.M., Radiohead and Pearl Jam there that season, unreal. For my PJ show they played an acoustic set off to the side stage near the time doors opened just so they could meet their goal of playing every song in their catalogue over the several days they were in Mansfield.

Edit: the new series should cover a song off of Accelerate just to give R.E.M. their flowers. The fact they made a banging album like that 27 years into their existence and over or near 2 decades after their peak (depending on if you are an IRS-era or Warner Bros-era fan) is just wow.

I'm the "Ben" that Bill and Mike are saying "thanks" to, as I had a small part in producing this doc, which is super worthwhile. Currently seems to only be available on some mini-pay service called Qello -- too bad Paramount+ can't be bothered to include the MTV music library...

That's awesome.

Last December, I attended a screening of that doc in Portland, OR --- followed by a live podcast recording where Peter Buck was interviewed by Chris Slusarenko (Guided by Voices, other bands). Chris had written letters to R.E.M when he was a kid - and Peter wrote him back. Chris still has the letters so he read them, along with the replies. It was pretty funny. He also asked Peter other questions about the bad etc.

During the screening of the doc, Peter stood at the theatre's bar and bought drinks for anyone who came up. Peter had had some wine himself beforehand (I know because he was sitting next to me at a bar across the street before the show started), and he was pretty open during the interview. You can listen to it here:

I was immediately out on Yasi when she was the guest on the Dave Matthews Band “Crash” episode. She went on and on what a fan she is and when Rob asked her how many shows she’s been to? Zero. WTF? That band’s entire identity, particularly its explosive growth in the mid 90s, is based on touring. There were 8 billion people more qualified to be the guest on that episode.

Perhaps. Too bad DMB stopped touring decades ago and she's had no chance to see them in her adult years. ;)
I was referring to the “explosive growth in the mid 90s” portion of the previous post.

I don’t know. There are lots of reasons to be out on Yasi. Concertgoing is an odd disqualifier for me.

REM is arguably my favorite band of all-time. I never saw them perform. I sure listened to Reckoning a lot, though.
