NN Taleb, guy who wrote fooled by randomness and the black swan (biz book not ballet movie) has popularized the term when talking about decision making and decision makers. More or less popular depending on your circle/interests I suppose.
I think Romney using the phrase five years ago should be enough to suggest it isn’t some new hip lingo, disirregardless of who might be trying to punch it up now.

It goes back well past Romney. Taleb has a book coming out with the title and it seems to be spreading. If you search google trends, you'll see it looks to peak briefly with Romney, die back down, and now trending up.

And LMM used it in Hamilton, which might have even more impact on Google trends. But it's obviously not remotely new.

One thing I've been noticing for a while now is that the Lombardi podcasts don't have sponsors. All the other Ringer podcasts I've listed to do, so I have to assume that the Lombardi podcasts have considerably lower download numbers. I still listen, on occasion, but the nicknames/Godfather, etc. schtick is terrible.

I love the Lombardi podcasts. I feel like I actually learn X O stuff about teams I don’t watch.

Unless you count Arizona Iced Tea!

I love CBB (and am a huge Heels fan like Tate Frazier) so I really wanted to like that show but it sucks. Tate Frazier, in particular, is actively unlikeable.

The latest episode of The Rewatchables on Get Out with Wesley Morris is really interesting. When done well; I think that is my favorite podcast to listen to.

Agreed that was fun. Wesley Morris is a treasure. I love him in stuff like this. He's critical and thoughtful while also being patient with Bill who obviously doesn't think about movies in the same way. He has probably his dream job at the Times but I wish he was at the Ringer and could do more stuff like this podcast and the youtube videos he did for the Oscars

I love Morris and I’ll be happy to listen, but Simmons is insufferable on pop culture— a toxic combination of utter confidence and idiocy

I really like Wesley specifically because I disagree with him a lot, but when I do it always makes me think. I just rewatched Get Out a couple of weeks ago and now I want to watch it again because they mentioned a bunch of stuff I never realized.

One thing that Wesley mentioned that I find interesting is the point about American actors, particularly black actors, being passed over for roles in favor of British actors with the belief that they have more “Shakespearean training.” I’ve thought about that myself, particularly with British actors playing the role of real Americans; so his insight was interesting.

You don't think "Call Me by Your Name...it's just two guys riding around Italy on bikes!" is an intelligent, thoughtful take?

Thanks to NBA Desktop, I am now going to have the "Eat a Dick USA" song in my head all day long. Such a good job with that mini-show every week, so many funny nuggets they pick up.

The most recent Rewatchables on Jurassic Park was a lot of fun and more the route I think they should go with on these. It was a few people who really like the movie discussing it and being fanboys. The best ones have all been like this. There are enough places to get deep criticism about movies all over the internet. The Miami Vice episode with Simmons and Chris Ryan discussing how insane that movie is and how much they love it was great. The Inception one where they all tried to sound smart and cultured because they realized the movie falls apart on repeated viewings just didn't work at all (it does but it's damn fun to look at). It's the same reason I love Blank Check. They both have forgotten more about movies than I'll ever know but can still enjoy at least parts of almost everything.

Shoemaker should be on all of them. He's very genuine and finds the best in everything he talks about which is perfect for this podcast. Fennessy was decent on Jurassic Park but usually falls into the film critic/inside Hollywood guy and takes the wind out of the sails.

Also, has anyone been keeping up with Binge Mode Harry Potter? I've only been able to listen to about half of the first one but have the rest queued up. I am very excited for it but I feel like their voices might kill it for me. It doesn't bother me as much once a week or so but for long stretches I don't know how much I can take in a row. Their speaking voices aren't great but I can get through. It's when they get excited and screech and yell that it completely ruins it and I anticipate there will be a lot of that in Harry Potter.

Bill with Chris Ryan and Shea Serrano are my favorite ones. The good rewatchables podcasts are some of the best podcasts in all of podcastdome.

I do agree that Fennessey is a bit of a ______. The first time I heard him I thought to myself: Who the fuck does this ______ think he is?

The screeching is brutal, as is the cadence used on the Binge Mode podcast. And let me just say, I desperately love that podcast and listen to every one of them.

But it's literally hard to listen to. I have no idea why Mallory uses the cadence she does and it's baffling nobody has suggested to the Podcast hosts that screeching isn't enjoyable to listen to. But the content and humor is top notch. It's a must listen for me. Just at low volume and without a significant boost of the speed.

Agreed on the Inception one. I've seen that movie a bunch of times and was excited to listen to the pod, but was surprised at how boring it was and turned it off after 30 minutes.

Fennessy always yelling "IT DOESN'T MATTER" whenever the host casually brings up the Rotten Tomatoes scores is very annoying.

As an alternate opinion, I have zero issue with Mallory or Jason's voices. Then again, I listen to all podcasts at normal speed.

I enjoyed the Jaws Rewatchables Podcast. Anything involving Chris Ryan and Simmons trading impressions/jokes is generally a good listen for me.

I am totally on board with Simmons/Ryan's affection for MIDNIGHT RUN. Lots of interesting stuff in that podcast, including alternative casting that actually wouldn't suck for a movie where the casting was spectacular.

Others considered for the Deniro role: Harrison Ford
Others considered for the Grodin role: Chevy Chase, Albert Brooks

Edit: Nope, I am definitely not a moron.

I really liked the Jay Williams podcast; Jay is a really smart guy and his stuff about the accident; about driving 100 mph down the highway and thinking because he made the league he was invincible, was really interesting.

That was one of the best Podcasts the Ringer has put out to date.
Agreed, all the quips about Robert Shaw had me cracking up.
Man, I’ve listened to four episodes of this show now, and I just don’t get it. Very little of the stuff makes me laugh, and listening to Simmons say things like “Jaws is the best movie of the last 50 years,” wondering whether Midnight Run may be Robert DeNiro’s “apex mountain,” and going on about Minnie Driver, Oscar winner, is just aggravating. I think the funniest line in the Midnight Run episode to me was Simmons saying “we have a great piece on “Grantland” about Blockbuster this week.”

I don't understand "apex mountain" category. Do they understand the redundancy, and this is sort of an inside/sarcastic joke? They've had multiple people on the pod and not one (by my measure) has pointed out how silly "apex mountain" sounds. Why not just call it "career apex." I need to know!

They did a really good job putting together the piece; although I would have liked some of the video clips to be a bit longer since a lot of them cut out key stuff from the scenes they were supposed to highlight.

The idea of ranking television episodes from every type of television is kind of inane; I have no idea how you could compare an episode of Top Chef, to an episode of Breaking Bad, to an episode of The Eric Andre Show. FWIW, I thought they picked not a particularly outstanding episode of South Park, there are a lot of better options than Good Times With Weapons.

No The Simpsons episode on the list, which seems extraordinarily criminal. Meanwhile, Vanderpump gets a nod?

It was a good list, don't get me wrong, but you can't make this list and not include Flaming Moes or Monorail, or almost any episode from Seasons 2 through 5.

Overall the list was ok, I guess, and the presentation was very good. Getting up in arms about something like this is stupid... but an episode of The Price is Right in the top 100? 5 (I think) MTV reality shows on the list? Ok, yeah maybe that office needs more people around to challenge Simmons. Episodes of The OC and Survivor ahead of "Ozymandias?" Come the fuck on.

Exactly. Kind of makes you wonder if he asks job candidates to name their favorite OC episode and why during the interview process. Heck, I'm just as surprised there wasn't an episode of The Challenge on this list.

These lists can be fun to argue about but I just don't get the Kardasian love. The final episode of Survivor Season 1? Sure, that was legitimate water cooler stuff, which "I think" is the point of this list. Totally subjective but IMO the single greatest hour of (non-sports related) TV I have ever watched was probably Ozymandias.

No need for surprise, as there was indeed an episode of The Challenge, at #42.

I’m sure they’d label this “Get off my lawn” type thinking, but it’s great that they made room for so many disposable reality shows and not for any episodes of Band of Brothers, The Pacific, or The Vietnam War (specifically, “The Breaking Point”, “Okinawa”, and “This is What We Do”).

But I’m sure that episode of The Challenge was pretty wrenching as well.
