Rocky would have been. Weird to do this first.

Rocky 4 is way more rewatchable than Rocky. This is the Rewatchable Mount Rushmore, right?

Rocky is a better movie, sure, but it is a real drama, Rocky 4 is more like an action movie.

Rocky 4 is definitely the better rewatchable. But I would submit that Rocky 3 would be even better than 4. In the end, a movie like Pulp Fiction or Goodfellas feels like a Mount Rushmore kind of movie. Rocky 4 is not, in my opinion.

In the Rewatchables community the Mount Rushmore of remaining films are Goodfellas, Boogie Nights, Pulp Fiction and Almost Famous.

There's a lot more, too. Raiders of the Lost Ark would, to me, be way more of a Rushmore movie than Rocky 4. There Will Be Blood. Heck, Star Wars or Empire is better. But Simmons has been talking about Rocky 4 specifically for years in his columns. So I guess it's a Rushmorian movie for him.

If you are doing a Rocky rewatchable and have to pick one, I agree that johnmd that Rocky 3 is the right answer. I would go:

1. Rocky 3 (Clubber Lang + the Rocky/Creed bromance is awesome)
2. Rocky (the OG)
3. Rocky 4 (
4. Rocky 2
5. Rocky 5 (just don't)

I am not including the Creed movies (which I really enjoyed, particularly the first one) or Rocky Balboa (which I thought was fine) because they feel separate to me.

I'm starting to question if folks are actually familiar with Simmons / The Ringer.

Rocky 4 is so much more Ringer/Simmons/Rewatchable core than Rocky. This is inner circle HoF, pantheon shit for him.

Rewatchables is only occasionally, tangentially about quality. It's core aesthetic is movies that Simmons would stumble onto on TBS hungover on the couch on Sundays in his 20s.

So completely accurate. This, and movies he just likes. More than half of the movies they do I think “Really? You’ve watched ‘Unfaithful’ over and over? How many times are you actually watching ‘Spotlight’? You have made a habit of revisiting ‘A Perfect Storm’?”

On the same token, they don’t cover what he doesn’t like. They’ll never do the MCU, which is why they let “Binge Mode” go bananas on that. “Raiders” is a great suggestion, but it’s not in Simmons’ wheelhouse so it won’t happen (at least with him on it). He once referred to “Temple of Doom” as “Raiders 2,” which tells you how much he cares about Indiana Jones.

To me, it speaks to the quality of the podcast that I usually enjoy the episode even if I couldn’t care less about the film.

Yeah, I can’t think of a more Bill Simmons movie than Rocky IV. Maybe Teen Wolf.

I’m sort of surprised he likes Almost Famous as much as he does because there are so many rock and roll Easter eggs that must go completely over his head, and not being “in” on a movie or show usually seems to turn him off.

Simmons went into Mallory's office and said "I have an idea for you...Binge watch all the GoT episodes and do a deep dive podcast on all the history, etc. with JC ahead of season 7." It was entirely his idea and likely driven by his relationship with HBO. He never watched the show really until like season six.

His love of Almost Famous is same as why every writer loves the movie.

I'm picturing Simmons saying to himself "Hey! That's the cover of Time Fades Away!" and snickering.

I had never heard that story before, makes total sense. It is a point in his favor that, like any good manager, he delegates something to a lieutenant who has more expertise in a area that the manager does not.

Chris Ryan: "...Neil Young album cover."
Simmons: "Which one?"
Chris Ryan: "Time Fades Away, which was released in 1973."
Simmons: "I uh... Is that the one with 'Cinnamon Girl'?"
Chris Ryan: "No, it's..."
Simmons: "Because that's a great tune. Like...top 3 Neil Young song. Maybe his best."
Chris Ryan: "No, actually Time Fades Away is kind of polarizing because it didn't have any hits, and Neil himself didn't like the recording of it and it was out of print for, like, 40 years."
Simmons: "So...why...?"
Chris Ryan: "His hardcore fans love it. And it's 1973."
Simmons: ".... I don't...I don't get it. So Crowe picks a flop of an album that people couldn't even buy? Why not...What album did Cinnamon Girl...What album had Cinnamon Girl. Or even Rocking In the Free World. Well, that came out later... What about Hey Hey My My, Rock and Roll can never die, what about that?"
Chris Ryan: "Cinnamon Girl came out like 5 years earlier, and Hey, Hey, My, My came out like 6 years later. Time Fades Away is 1973."
Simmons: "So? I mean...alright whatever. It's just kind of odd that Crowe like, honored a lousy album."
Ryan: "It's not *lousy*, it's actually kind of amazing, it's just not something you ever hear on the radio."
Simmons: "So it's like...most of Pearl Jam's stuff after 1996 or so."

Ryan: "Um...not exactly, I mean. Well, ok, let's go with that. It's an album that only real fans appreciate, and I think it would be like, like...OK, if Crowe made a movie that involved Pearl Jam set in 1996...."
Simmons: "Well, now we're in Singles territory."
Ryan: "Right, but...let's say he made a movie celebrating the MUSIC of 1996, he's not going to reference "Ten", right? He's going to reference "No Code."
Simmons: "Yeah... Not the best Pearl Jam album though."
Ryan: "Let's move on."

I tend to be late getting to Rewatchables episodes, so I just listened to The Martian this weekend. The recurring crew outrage over Simmons' hot take about Lincoln was hysterical.

However, Bill completely redeemed himself, in my eyes, when he went after Scorcese's repetitive soundtrack selections. The rest of the crew pushed back hard, but IMHO Bill was right. I was rolling when Bill said to Ryan "So, should I listen to the Goodfellas soundtrack when I watch Goodfellas, or when I watch The Irishman, when he uses all the songs again? You tell me.".

Lastly, Van Lathan is the best. He should be on so many more episodes.

What exactly was his take on ‘Lincoln’?

I am guessing Bill did NOT like it because it was boring/long, but I admit to being out of the loop on this one.

The question was about directors having great movies over consecutive decades. Panel said Spielberg and quoted Lincoln, Bill was like no that sucks. He was mocked for this. I don’t think he was pwned that hard because it does suck and he is correct.

This is amazing. It really gets into why, as much as I can sometimes enjoy the format of the show, I'll just never be in love with this podcast.

Lincoln is good, but I'm fine with the pushback on it being a great movie. Luckily, Spielberg has Bridge of Spies to get him into the 2010s for that conversation.

The only thing not perfect about this is that I think it might be a bit more Fennessey than Ryan. But the Simmons couldn't be more Simmons.

So,weird. In the Rocky 4 rewatchables, Simmons calls Rocky “creed” multiple times. He is never corrected. and it is an especially bad mistake because there is actually a Creed/Drago fight in this movie.

Haven’t listened to the first episode yet and I’m sure it’ll be great, but I was a little disappointed Binge Mode went with the MCU for this round. Was hoping for Hobbit/LoTR. While I like most of the movies, the stories don’t really provoke the kind of emotional connection that has really made BM shine in the past. Comic deep dives should be fun though.

A Hobbit/LoTR binge mode would be hard because the Tolkein canon is so much bigger than the Hobbit/LoTR itself, and the audience for a deep dive on, say, Galadriel's pre-Third Age biography is probably not very large.

It's definitely funny how he pronounces it. RoBit!
That's a weird North Shore accent or something. I distinctly remember getting the last word wrong on a 5th grade spelling test because the teacher pronounced robot as "ro-bart". I even asked her to repeat it, and she said "ro-bart." So I wrote, you know, "Robart" and got it wrong.

She also had a perm and had a bunch of Kiss 108 stickers on her desk. She was the most 80s middle aged teacher ever.

It's not Robart. And it's not Robit either.

It is Ro Bot.

And you got screwed in the spelling test. You should contest.

That’s true. My thinking is it could have been more of the thematic style episodes with some character deep dives sprinkled in, but I can see how it would be a turn-off. I know for example the Star Wars EU has a bigger audience but I basically used those parts of the SW binge to get extra sleep on my commute.

Probably why Harry Potter may have been the perfect binge topic for them as a universally popular thing that is very digestible all things considered with 7 books and 8 movies following a very neat beginning to end story that wasn’t yet old enough to have been filled in with all kinds of unnecessary backstory (of course that filling in is now very much in progress).

So what exactly does Ryan Shazier bring to the table for his NFL podcasts? Doesn’t tell interesting stories, has no inside information, and never tells me anything I don’t already know. The Steelers have a lot of wide receivers, the Bucs have a better defense than you think, the Bears are who we thought they were, and so on and so on. I’m sympathetic to his comeback from a ghastly injury and nobody can deny he was a great player...but does that mean he gets a podcast?

Out of curiosity - in what context? Was there some meaning or symbolism to the dogs? I only remember him playing with them in their own room in the scene where Morgan Freeman comes over for dinner.

They were actually Pitt's dogs in real life; they have a 1-10 "Chewy's Rating" thing they do when dogs are in a movie; I think they were referencing the scene to show that Det. Mills had a light playful side we don't otherwise see in the movie, other than when he's a meathead.

I tend to agree with you on this. Of the recent ex-athlete hires, I think Raja is a homerun and I like the little that I've heard from CC (pains me to say), but Shazier seems like a miss.

Raja is phenomenal. He will tell an anecdote and it's always apt to the topic. He's on point with everything.

CC is also great, he was excellent on Bill's pod today, in fact. He comes off like a good dude, too.

On the NFL channel, Nora Princiotti with Kevin Clark is phenomenal. That show is SO much better with Nora and not Mays, who is a bum. But at this point, the Shazier pod is an auto skip. I can't listen to it, it's boring and without any info. I imagine Shazier won't be there for long.

I'm glad they're going to finish Marvel but I'm really sad this is the end of Binge Mode. That podcast has been one of the few things that's brought me consistent joy the last couple years.

I hope he and Mallory get to team up again on something somewhere down the line.

Wow, I did not expect that. I wonder where he is going; I can't think of another place that could really give him the kind of platform to do all of the different stuff he is good at like The Ringer. He's super talented, I bet he got offered a dream job somewhere big.

They made allusions to someday doing a LOTR Binge Mode during the first MCU one. I’ll cross my fingers for that to happen someday.

I think the writing was on the wall when he suddenly announced that NBA Desktop was a series finale a week or two ago, but surprising considering BM just kicked off the MCU.

I would agree that Concepcion and BM are the best part of The Ringer, at least to my eyes and ears. I’ve never been a big Simmons guy, and don’t really care about the other pods. He and Mallory’s chemistry is hilarious and I don’t think Binge Mode will be the same if they try and plug someone else in.

He’s also been one of the more outspoken staff members regarding The Ringer’s union, IIRC. Be very curious to see where he ends up.

I assume Defector is not yet in a place to bring in someone like Concepcion, but he'd be a fit in terms of breadth of coverage and benevolent corporate structure. I might consider subscribing there if they added him.

I wonder how much money he could make doing a few videos a week on his own YouTube channel (or multiple channels -- one for movie/TV reviews, one for sports takes, one for video game streaming and reviews)? I suspect the answer is "a lot" given his built-in audience.

Will be interesting to see where Concepcion goes. I'd guess it is either someplace where he gets to a level that was blocked at the Ringer of being senior leadership, or he's going into a different direction ala Greenwald,
