I respect Jeter and everything but it's kind of awesome his last season will be like a .240 season with no power and shit defense as the Yankees battle to finish above .500

My thoughts exactly.  He wants the Mariano treatment.

I'm sure they'll give him a very nice sendoff, perhaps with some lovely parting gifts. Unfortunately they'll place them 2 feet to his left so he'll never be able to pick them up.

Last regular season game will be at Fenway.  He better get a prolonged standing ovation.

Tremendous competitor.  I'll tip my cap to him.

The farewell tour is going to be insufferable.

I want to see the Sox blow up and frame this picture from 2004 as his parting gift:

This means there's no way he gets moved out of SS this year, then. If he was trying to play a few more years it might be worth it for him, but no way will be lose the chance to be a SS his entire career during the final season. Which is good news for everyone who doesn't like the Yankees.

So, I can only pray to God we don't have another miserable ceremony in Fenway for another Yankee player. Let the Yankees do that and any other team that is weak willed.
On the other hand, another year of sub par fielding from the Yankee Shortstop may be worthy of a ceremony or two.

Horrific news.

Only one more year of Jeter's piss poor range at SS and putting the Yankees in an impossible position all around.

Arguably more Ortiz leverage in the extension negotiation as one of the Yankees' possible DH candidates for 2015 will not be there.

Another farewell tour and ceremonies across MLB, incluidng Boston, when we hail someone who "you just have to respect, etc."

Maybe he'll reconsider.

Timing is interesting. His body must be telling him something even now. I doubt he will do the Mariano tour. That's not his style. Jeter-haters may find this hard to believe but the guy doesn't seek the spotlight. It came to him from time to time but in the clubhouse, he was happy to stay in the background until O'Neill and that crowd finally left after 2001.

Jeter got way too much credit for the team success from 1996-2001. He was just a spoke in the wheel of a deep roster. He became the face of the team after that because that's how things are done in this day and age.

I see him as similar to Joe DiMaggio, worshipped by many, not really well-liked by some of his teammates.

Maybe they sign Stephen Drew now. No shortstops coming in the farm system, that's for sure. Not Nunez!

He'll have been on the DL for quite some time by then. If he does show up, I'm getting $250/each for my tix

Of course he will. He's at least as respected as Rivera was.

HELL no.

Respected, sure.  As respected as Mo?  GOAT?  No way.

He should, as in-game tribute, add a full minute to when he steps into the box and holds his back arm behind him to signify to the ump and pitcher and all of creation that he's ready for the first pitch when HE says so.

So, if they don't sign Drew to a multi year deal, here are the 2015 FAs:

Shortstops
Mike Aviles (34) - $3.5MM club option with a $250k buyout
Asdrubal Cabrera (29)
Yunel Escobar (32) - $5MM club option
Rafael Furcal (37)
Alex Gonzalez (37)
J.J. Hardy (32)
Derek Jeter (41)
Jed Lowrie (31)
John McDonald (40)
Hiroyuki Nakajima (32) - $5.5MM club option with a $500K buyout
Nick Punto (37) - club/vesting option
Hanley Ramirez (31)
Jimmy Rollins (36) - vesting/club/player option

I can't see the Yankees getting in a bidding war for Hanley.  Asdrubal is probably most interesting.  Hardy or Lowrie also possibilities.

Punto!

Well, the whiplash of losing Jeter and having A-Rod return will make 2015 excruciating for Yankee fans.

I think any ceremony honoring Jeter should include at least 5 A-Rod references: "2nd best shortstop on the Yankees since 2004."  That sort of thing.

Could be reading too much in to this, but I'm wondering how much his surgically repaired ankle is feeling if he already knows he doesn't have more than one more season in him. Nice of the Yankees to pay him $10+ million for a farewell tour.

Verducci says he did this before the season so he doesn't have to hear retirement questions in every city during 2014. Makes sense. He just wants to play it out, for better or worse. And then he goes off to St. Jetersburg and gets married, which is good because he was starting to worry me a little.

I was thinking the same thing.

"Hey Steve, this is Cash.  Come be a "utility" guy for a year, knowing that Jetes will probably spend half the year on the DL anyway, and then next year the job is all yours. How's 4/60 sound?"

Yeah, TOTALLY not for money and fame reasons. Jesus.

EDIT: Not directed at you, at Verducci and mainstream sports media who will ballwash their Saint Jeter all summer. Already sick of it.

If the Yankees are playing out the string he might just sit out the last 3 games at Fenway. They finish their home schedule on 9/25 and go to Boston on 9/26-9/28

Oh fucking Christ, his last three games are at Fenway?  Hopefully the Sox clinch the division well before that so I don't have to pay attention.

That's what Ted Williams did. He skipped the trip to NY to end the 1960 season. But somehow I think Jeter would enjoy finishing his career in Fenway. He always relished the idea of playing in that park, for so many reasons. Jeter does respect the history of the game. Ted did, too, but Ted was a different kind of fellow.

I hope this is another Pettitte retirement and he keeps coming back and forcing the Yankees to play him and pay him.
With a Suzyn Waldman Clemens-level freakout thrown in for good measure when he announces his return

Worry you a little about what, terry?

Whatever else I might say about Jeter, that's a nice little speech up there, more honest than most such announcements.  And to those worried about the ballwashing tour, at least after this year we won't have to hear about him again.  It could be worse, he could insist on playing until his legs fall off and we get 3-5 more years of the media nonsense.  At this point, both Red Sox and Yankees fans realize that the less Jeter in their lives, the better.

Of course, I hope his team goes 0-162 and we sign Tim Wakefield to a one-day contract at the end of the year so we can trot him out to strike out Jeets one last time on a futile, flailing swing.

Why, do you have a daughter of consenting age and a weakness for gift bags?

I'll miss Jeter; my enduring memory will be of him leading the applause from the visitor's dugout on Opening Day 2005. A worthy competitor and deserving Hall of Famer.

I just had another terrible thought.  How am I supposed to watch any game on YES this year?  Kay will be extra insufferable.
