Makes no sense to wait on the contrast in this setting at all. There is a very very tiny risk of infection with any injection, but definitely not a reason to do a suboptimal test on a major league pitcher. I don't know what he means by "inflames" the joint, it can be a bit uncomfortable after the injection for a day or so. This was also in the offseason....

The top musculoskeletal radiologist at HSS in general thinks her scanners and protocols are so good the dye is not needed (at least for typical patients). Not sure if she has the same feeling for athletes or if Severino even went there. Regardless, I'd certainly be annoyed if I was a Yankee fan or the Yankee FO by the delayed diagnosis.

As one Yankee fan who does not live or die with every major injury, the delay with Severino means nothing to me. Breaking news: pitchers get hurt, especially the max effort guys. Severino’s absence just opens the door for someone else.
Worrying about things you can’t control is not ideal behavior. See you next year, Luis. You will be replaced.

I dont think it's that big of a deal, but the delay knocks his timeline back a couple of months of course.

Not the end of the world, but I would be annoyed if it happened to one of the Red Sox best pitchers.

I wonder who made the ultimate decisions. I’ve always been asked which I preferred on the initial MRI and gone with the dye because it’s been explained as low risk/moderate reward and the alternative amounted to potential wasted time or aggravation of an injury not picked up immediately.

Probably ortho doc, perhaps in consult with radiologist.

Some situations the dye is better, some it's not (or even worse). UCL tear is one good use for it.

Maybe I said this already but this hurts NY in 2021 more than 2020. With Tanaka/Paxton FAs, NY has just Cole/German set currently. They can probably fill two more spots internally by then, but 3 is tough. This injury maybe means they try to keep one of Tanaka/Paxton, I thought before this they might let both go.
